Linux Firewall

Recommended Posts

I threw together an old computer and installed Redhat 9 - just for a taste of Linux.

I notice if I go to "shields up" for a port scan, ports 0 and 1 are closed (not stealthed)

and my machine is apparently replying to pings (I guess it shouldn't)

Would a more recent distro solve this issue?

Should I install a 3rd party firewall? If so, could somebody recommend one?

Also I'm on dialup, if it makes any difference. (can't believe I got this modem to work).

Thanks

congrats on getting you dial up modem to work :-)

you could try the program guarddog, it is easy to set up. I have used that in the past, it should give you full stealth mode.

Thanks very much. They even had a .rpm just for Redhat 9 !

Now grc.com says I am completely stealthed.

Expect more annoying questions from me in the future.

And thanks again.

use the command lokkit on red hat will allow you to configure the firewall with no additional software.
