olmec36
Hello everyone. Well, I have been upgrading my computer, new power supply, monitor, XP SP2, other things to come. I have one little 12 v fan that makes a whirring noise at boot up, then returns to normal. I have cleaned out all the dust in computer case and the fan with compressed air.My question is what, if any lubricants, are recommended to help lubricate fans. I also have no problem replacing the fan with a new one, but just wanted to find out any recommendations that could maybe solve the problem. Thanks Olmec
robroy
I used a silicon based lubricant, doesn't conduct electricity so if you overspray it won't hurt anythingJD
olmec36
Excellent, thank you. Will look into that.

murtu52
it could be the fan (i mean, that specific one). My computer's fan burnt out, and i use dell. I had to spice the cord, and connect it to the old fan. It ran really loudly. I found out later that the fan was defective, not the power connection.

mikex
oh nerelda that was a low BLOWI have had fan noises before. Remove the fan, peel the sticker, drop some oil, (i use PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench) replace sticker or put tape over the hole, spin fan by hand to remove extra oil, reinstall.I have even removed the fan and sprated it with the pot sprayed in the sink. This was a fan that would not move any air because the dust. After cleaning I used my dremel with no bit just the collet the spin the fan from the fan hub. The dremel spinning around 10,000 rpm removes some wate. Next is a treatment with a blow dryer to get the fan HOT for maximum water evaporation, then the dremel again. Let it sit overnight, applied oil, bada bing bada bang fan worked and is now installed in my case as an exhaust fan. 2 yrs and counting. What a way to save five bucks. Now I am not saying you should put water on you fan but the above worked for me. M
cowsgonemadd3
The best for that purpose would be wd-40. Its more of a liquid type. Just a thought......
