Matt
Hi marty,Yes there are sites that allow free music downloads, but in most places, they are illegal. You can, however, get free legal music from http://purevolume.com this site houses many underground bands--some of which are very good. The site is all mp3, so it will work on an iPod.Other sites to consider:http://ccmixter.org/http://magnatune.com/http://www.opsound.org/Matt
Bubba Bob
Well, Im not sure if its "legal".I saw it on TSS a couple years ago. Download Winamp 3 and StreamRipper, and you can rip the radio stations. Kinda like listening to the radio while recording it onto a tape.
blim
Hi Marty,A trick that we use (and "not sure" if its legal or not, but the RIAA isn't cracking down on this) is our local libraries rent CDs either for free or for 50cents, depending on the town. Son rents CDs and copies them. Our libraries are part of a cooperative and it is possible to go to their website and order CDs to arrive at the local library, who call when they arrive. The librarians know what Son is doing and say "smart thinking!"And they have most of the "new stuff", but even better, a lot of the "hard to find older stuff".Liz

il_wiccan
People around here also do the same thing with DVD movies.......
macmarauder
another one is to start one of those rent all you want in a moth accounts at a video rental store. then rent as many dvd movies as you want for the period of the trial account and use a dvd ripping program to copy them. wala free borrowed movies. i bet that you could get all your favorite movies in a month or so especially if you also have a dvd burner and copy them straight across. but that one is less legal. i wanted to do a music video of an anime called Berserk but it's a 8 disc dvd series that cost about $120 - $160. so instead i just paid the $14 trail account at block buster and rented the whole series one at a time in 3 days. wala then i just canceled the account. i didn't burn copies of the dvds but i extracted the footage and just saved it to the hard drive for my music video.
