I am looking at building a high end gaming pc. I am looking at getting an amd 64 4000+ but would it be worth it to upgrade to one of the X2's?

From what I heard most of today's games don't fully take advantage of dual core yet. On Attack Of The Shows Ultimate Game Machine they used a high end AMD 64 FX (of course there's was $1000)

An X2 3800+ isn't a bad choice if you intend to overclock.

Not very pricey, about the exact same price as the 4000+.

And they overlcok well, about the same ~2.5-2.6ghz you'll get out of any Rev E chip.

At stock speeds the 4000+ will give you far more bang for the buck in games.

OR

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ Processor Socket 939 Retail ***Free 2nd Day*** $688.00Okay here you go, you can add take away items as you like but the one 2 things I would stay with are the motherboard and "BFG" video card. BFG is a little more expensive but they are the best. the motherboard offers SlI (The NVIDIA® SLI ™ (Scalable Link Interface) technology enables two PCI-Express cards on this motherboard to provide extreme performance over the edge) wow to video cards acting as one. imagine that performance. i have it and let me tell you its great. to upgrade just buy another video card (exact same)

When you narrow it down to 2 or 3 chips based on price etc...the real deciding factor should be the on board cache. The bigger the better.

200mhz here or there is n't going to make a difference, not at those speeds (its like saying you can really tell the difference between 190mph and 200 mph, regardless, its just damn fast)
