Automatically Kill Shutdown Timers

Recommended Posts

Anyone who has been affected by MSBlast, Sasser and similar viruses knows about those ominous countdown timers in NT-based versions of Windows, upon the completion of which the system shuts down. Many of those affected by these viruses also likely know about SHUTDOWN -A, a very useful command for aborting these countdown timers. Unfortunately, it can be tedious or distracting to have to manually issue SHUTDOWN -A every time a countdown timer appears, especially when you're working to remove the infection.

Well, I have created a small free program that will automatically issue SHUTDOWN -A for you, allowing you to continue working towards removing the virus uninterrupted. Shutdown Stopper automatically issues the SHUTDOWN -A command at preset intervals (15, 30 or 60 seconds) depending on which level of protection is selected. Or, if you still wish to issue the command manually, Shutdown Stopper provides a button for you to click, which means no more typing the command out.

I actually wrote this program in May of last year, but I still see occasional posts about people getting these countdown timers (Usually from a variant of MSBlast/Sasser, or a new virus that also causes the countdown timers). So, as part of my public service to the computing and tech support community, I am trying to spread the word about this small and useful utility.
