Spybot Search And Destroy Found Red Backweb Lite

Recommended Posts

I updated Spybot Search and Destroy just fine, immunized too, then ran a scan last night.

It found 54 of the "backweb lites" and listed it in red...which it has been ignoring for ages. So why has it suddenly taken them on again, after Spybot people changed their mind about whether they are even a hazzard or not months and months ago?

I have researched both Backweb and Backweb lite several times in the past, and again today, via Google. Also have previously seen discussions on my various boards. They seem to be a combo of legitimate product updater and also spyware.

I had previously decided to ignore it when it was only listed in green. They didn't even search for it, or show it in a scan for a long time. But now it is in red. Same number of them as always found by Spybot, though.

I have an HP computer, and a logitech keyboard.

Both of which are on the list of where it came from, and quote: needing it: unquote.

And the reports of massive error popups of missing files after Spybot removes it, and/or reports of computer not working right afterwards, is the reason I am scared to have Spybot get rid of it. Also reports of things not working right even after having Spybot return backweb lites, scares me from even test trying to get rid of them and then returning them if needed.

Does anyone know for sure one way or another what the answer is???

God bless everyone.

Heya thesidekickcat,

Actually, in your case, backweb should stay. HP and Compaq use Backweb to update their systems, through the web. I also believe some logitech products will install it if you install stuff off the CD. So I recommened that you just leave it and just ignore Spybot this time. Bottom line: Leave Backweb installed on your machine. If you have any more questions about this, feel free to post and I will do my best to answer.

Hope that helps. B)

Thanks for the reply,

Yes that was what I thought too, though was somewhat more concerned this time due to it now being in red as bad, versus earlier green as not so bad. But I don't want to jeopardize my HP computer or keyboard operations.

Thanks again for your answer.

God bless everyone.

Hello flash,

Yes I saw that one and the other thread of yours over on G4. I was wondering if they were related to this backwebby thing.

The backwebby stuff seems to be a no win situation for us (hard to live with and worse to live without it if it is needed), as is any of the automatic whenever stuff wants to update stuff is. I like to be in charge of what is going on and when things update, especially since I am on dialup. Besides somethings are not needed, or are worse in newer versions, and of course the very real possibility of them carrying a bigger payload than what they are suppossed to do for us. Sigh!!!:rolleyes::unsure::rolleyes:

God bless everyone.

I just want to thank you all for an eye opener!! Backweb Lite SOUNDS like a spyware thing--and if I had Sidekickcat's equipment, being new to the spyware battles, I would have deleted them without a second thought. I was just wondering if there was a list somewhere for other manufacturers (like Dell and Gateway? :):) ) or maybe even perhaps start a pinned list on the spyware forum of things to ignore, so others don't wonk out their machines?

Hi Liz,

I am sorry that I didn't put any of my source links to this problem.

If you have it show up on Spybot, I bet there is something on your computer, keyboard, webcam, mouse, or who knows what else, that requires it. It just looks to risky to remove it as far as I can tell. So I have no idea why Spybot has started this back up after they quit doing it. Yes it is something that can be misused, or be bad, but I don't know how to tell the difference, and Spybot only lists it in the aggregate of 54 to get rid of, all or none from the looks of it on my setup.

Here are a few links to read up on it. Read them closely for the problems that show up if you do remove it.

Backweb info thread at newbie.org

Lots of backweb info here + FAQs

Here is a recent thread and link to another thread on it at net integration.

Backweb lite info at net integration

Liz this next one mentions that Mcafee (sp?) uses it so be careful not to remove it if it shows up on Spybot scan.

Compukiss thread on backweb stuff

Plus I think I have read about it at G4 but didn't save the thread links.

All I have found says basically the same things, sure it comes with many different products and is useful, but can be made into something bad too, it is easy to remove via Spybot, hard to get it all put back right if you decide to have Spybot replace it, it also gives trouble if removed and needed via errors popups etc, it is hard to fix the problems, it can be misused by someone though no one seems to mention when this has happened so where is the proof and that sounds like more of myth at this point or some possibility in the future.

So that is all I know about it from my research so far, and I am not removing it.

As for a list of things that shouldn't be removed except with expert advice, I haven't seen it, though do have a short one for Spybot of 4 other items, if I can find it around here. You might have seen the long G4 threads that TymeKyller did about Spybot having stuff in ignore list checked and we unchecked it, then it turned out to need experts to remove if found rather than have Spybot remove them. But ok to have it unchecked and immunized from if you didn't have them show on a scan. I know that came out wierd sounding, but then the threads were too. I think there was a reference thread over here to that discussion there.

Now that I have totally mixed you up I will make my getaway. heeehee

God bless everyone.

Thanks Sidekickcat!!

Read a couple of links till my eyes glazed over and realized it would be a real mess to delete those files! Thanks for the heads up on Mcafee! Wrote Son a note in case he runs the scans (he dives into more adventurous things on the web than I do--never porn though!--and is in the habit now of scanning afterwards if he runs into something suspicious) Think it may be a good idea to google what we don't recognize, too.

You are welcome Liz.

By the way, some of those links are great for all sorts of info. Look around while you are in there.

Actually that is how I got alot of my computer favorites, by following someone's (trusted people only) link to something specific like these, then decided to look around the site a bit and found some real good sites for future use. Plus I have a backweb folder of reference page links in my computer favorites folder.

Just thought I'd throw the extra tips in for free for you...haha.

P.S. Since you mentioned Google, in case you missed it, you can set your Google toolbar to safe search, a bit of extra filtered protection for family. I have a thread somewhere around here with how-tos.

God bless everyone.

Hello all, new poster here.

Back web lite has me going in circles. I have several logictech devices hooked up to my pc, the newest one being the orbitic cam by logictech. Like many others here, i use Spybot and many other scum ware programs. Just in the last few weeks, spybot has found 54 entries of back web lite. SB can remove them, but like others have said, it removes backweb lite after a reboot and scan.

I did a search for backweb lite on my pc, and it turned up 50+ files in my C drive. All the files are SB recovery files, and it say's i need a password to access these files, so i just started deleting them all...Some files could not be removed, get error message, can not read from file or disk.

So, is backweb lite legit oe not??

Thanks Robert

Welcome to the boards iwuud2.

Yes this backweb lite thing is perplexing to say the least.

As I said earlier in the thread, Spybot has now renewed its listing of backweb lite as spyware after it stopped listing it months ago. I don't know why they are listing it again. But for those of us with HP/Compaq computers, or logitech devices, etc. that utilize Backweb lite as updaters etc, it is a major problem to remove it and find out it is needed for something, mainly because to use the Spybot recovery mode to reinstate it doesn't work to fully return it to previously normal functions according to my research.

So the best thing is to leave it on your computer rather than risk the potential problems I think. Do read the links I posted earlier in the thread to see why I am not going to remove it from my system. I hope your removing what you did does not cause you any problems.

God bless everyone.

Thanks for posting back. I'm glad it's working out ok for you.

Would love to get rid of mine too, unless it is needed for computer and wont recover intact, but who can tell the bad from the good of it?

Did you get the latest Spybot Update? And do the scan afterwards? I'm up from 54 to 56 now of the Backweb stuff. But now at least it gives a dropdown menu of all of them (not that it makes any sense to me as a nongeek!!!)

As for it being a full screen program when you update/scan for stuff, just the way it is I guess.

Have you immunized from future bad guys? Click on the odd looking red pizza pie icon, then on the green plus sign at top of main section. Took me a long time to figure out the pizza pie icon was what people were talking about to get to immunize window. HaHa on me. Though it still seems like a wierd icon.

I use the default newbie setting. I don't explore/click stuff on anything unless it is labeled or someone tells me it is safe... just a scaredy cat I guess!!!

What an early bird you are time-wise when you post, or are you in a different country? Anyhow welcome to the boards. And join in anywhere you want. I am heading over to the Besttechie cafe' for some coffee and maybe a gab session. Nice place to just have fun.

God bless everyone.

Hi iwuud2 and Welcome to BestTechie.net, the nicest and safest place on the WWW.

There really is no need to delete the SpyBot recovery files since the BackWeb Lite entries cannot do any harm from there.

"BackWeb" can be spyware but in most cases, "BackWeb Lite" is a stripped down version of BackWeb that many companies use for its updater service without the spyware components, like Logitech as most of you have found out by now.
