Printers have evolved as a very important part of today’s infrastructure of any company. Traditionally people have to invest separately for different products required in an office (essential ones also). There has to be a printer, a fax machine, a scanner….but now as the technology is converging, so are the products. We have today a Multi functional Printer that does all the tasks like faxing, copying, scanning and printing for us. A multi functional printer is a combinational product comprising of a printer, scanner, copier, and sometimes also a fax machine. While I am a big fan of multifunction network aware machines like the HP Photosmart and officejet series there are many factors to consider .

The cost of ink cartridges is just one factor; their life expectancy is another. Some tanks hold more ink and than others, so when you calculate cost based on the ink volume the larger tanks may be cheaper. But some of these dry out if not used while others can be left for months between print jobs and have no problems. Careful research helps.

While multifunction devices combine the functions of several devices meaning you have less footprint you have to consider that if one component fails you have to replace the whole thing , buy a one of the stand alone items you opted not to get , or live with the lack. So your scanner fails and now you have a big bulky printer and the need to buy a separate scanner. Or the printer goes out and you are stuck with a scanner which is not as good quality as a stand alone one might have been. So you have to weigh the factors carefully. Will it be worth it if you replace it after a year or two with a new model? Is the space that valuable?

Many factors must be taken into consideration when making the choice of going with an all in one ; it is not a simple "this is better" answer.
