i had a 20gig maxtor hdd

given to me by a med center

i tried to fdisk it but it would only get to 50 percentand then start rescanning

i have a feeling it has been shredded

is there a recovery tool for shredded hdds

Use Maxblast to test the hard drive.

You could also try a 0 (zero) write on the HD.

ok i tried the maxtor scanner

and it says it is a failing hdd

wich just goes to show how that medical center got ripped of

they were saddled with a compt with a failing hdd

and it never worked properly

they gave it to me to test

and i knew i could get help here

i was suspicious

as when i tried to fdisk

as the company didnt think they had the expertise

to find any thing wrong

for their office use so god knows how many are affected

Might be just an isolated drive that was bad from the factory or a refurbished one that is bad. I'm sure they will replace it without any trouble.

I would still use kill disk and then use the maxtor drive partitioning and formatting tool and then retest. I have seen this happen when someone tried to partition for linux install and then tried to fdisk over and quit part way through.

Do you have the HD hooked up to another system? Just run Killdisk from the other HD on the bad HD. Then run Maxtor Tools on it. Or you will need a bootable Floppy with both MAxtor Tools and Killdisk on it.

Marty, when using KillDisk do not have any hard drives except for the one you want to zero out in the computer (set as Master). You could accidently wipe out your personal hard drive. The correct KillDisk download will self install to a formatted floppy. It sounds like you just copied the file to the floppy.

Booting from Floppy for Free version

Put in a floppy disk in the floppy drive then open My Computer. Right click on your floppy drive then select Format. Check the box for Quick format and click Start. Leave the floppy disk in the drive. Download KillDisk from the link Bootable Floppy Disk Creator for Active@ KillDisk under "or use 1 step Bootable Floppy Creation". When you double click the downloaded file it will create the floppy for you (self-extracting).

When you boot from this floppy just follow the directions.

You will need to FDISK and format the hard drive after you zero it out. Pull the KillDisk floppy out of the floppy drive when it is completed then put in a Windows boot disk in the floppy drive and reboot. Follow the FDISK procedure for Partitioning a New Drive - Single Large Partition. Once that is done format the drive.

I use this WinME bootdisk from Radifed to FDISK and fromat. Just format a floppy as you did for KillDsik then install this to it just like for KillDisk (self-extracting).

what had happened to the hdd

and after scanning what was the chances for recovery

as it is no matter to me

i really wanted to see if these compnents could be restored on line

but unfortunately they have to be sent to the factory

but it is a good learning experience for

Glad you pointed that out. I have never used Killdisk and just assumed it would work from another HD by stating the drive you wanted to Kill. So it is a download to floppy deal huh? Glad I never needed it.

Yes, you either install it to a floppy disk or they have an ISO to burn to a bootable CD. If used wrong it can wipe the wrong drive if you aren't paying attention. It is quite simple to run and works very well. The free version will only do one pass, but that is usually enough to straighten out a corrupted drive. I use it to clean any used hard drive I save from from customer computers when upgrading. I have some drives that were causing them problems, yet after running KillDisk they worked fine. The customers still didn't trust the hard drive so I would keep them for my use.

My XP setup resides on one of those drives right now. It is an older IBM and has been running without issue for ten months. It passes all S.M.A.R.T. tests. Knock on wood.

yes that disk is not to bad

but when i isolate the drive

im tryng restore

it gives me this message

take out the media and reboot

i cant think why it is doing this sort of thing

with your disk you linked

i tried it on another hdd

and it worked great

tho i wasen going to use it other than storage

pete said if a linux os has been installed on that disk

the partitions will stopped you from accessing it

and it has had lycoris on it so he may be right

but ime trying again now

Seeing as it had 'nix on it try QtParted to format the drive as FAT32. Then you could use KillDisk.
