  1. Well I am going to start listing things here soon. I just wish I did not have to dump this ram and stuff since it is still fairly good stuff. Dam.

I know and that is what is bothering me. Well looks like eBay for this stuff.
i have not seen a socket A mother board on either of those sites for well over 2 months. It is not looking good

I bought my Socket A Epox 9-KHA+ with an AMD XP 2400+, Creative sound card and Linksys NIC in a all in one deal for under $100, 5 years ago on ebay. Knock on wood it still runs fine.

  2. Well if you see something like on Tiger Direct or Newegg.com let me know. I mean I would like to keep what I got and put it back into service but if that is not going to happen then the parts go up for sale.

Steer clear of the ECS, PC Chips, SOYO and other less known brands. I have had ggod luck with the MSI, Epox, Asus, Gigabyte and Shuttle Socket A motherboards. My Epox 8-KHA+ is still running strong after 6 years of abuse.

  3. Tried to clear the CMOS, no dice. It still does not work. I think the Motherboard is DOA. Not surprising but hey it was fun while it lasted. Now to find a cheap Socket A mobo to replace it but good luck from what I hear.

Well I will try clearing the CMOS. Not holding out much hope here. I will see what happens. If it works great, if not the board is toast.
Have you tried clearing the CMOS battery? Or just pull it out and then put it back in. There is a jumper next to the battery and if you place the jumper on the opposite 2 pins for a few seconds and then put it back it clears the CMOS. MAke sure you put the memory in the first slot and try it after clearing the CMOS.

  5. no errors. I get a blank screen. No beeps unless I move the memory around and then I get them. I mean this thing is going bonkers. I have not even moved the video card since I put things into this case almost a year ago or more. I mean I get nothing to show on the screen at all.

OK, not working but activitiy from HDD. Do you still get the same errors or a blank screen? Does the PC beep at all and what type of beeps do you get? If only one beep when you turn it on and the HDD is flashing, there is a chance your Monitor or graphics card is at fault. Do you get any text on the screen when booting, or is it just a black screen? Double check the Graphics card is tight or reseated and that the monitor cable is plugged in tight. Use just one memory chip and try again.
  6. Is the PC working now, NO! It is DOA. I mean it turns on but that is all it does. I think the MOBO is shot. I mean it does not even boot no more. I mean I see the HD light flicker now and then but that is it. I wish I would have known this sooner. I hope my drive that is in there is ok. I want to save the PC but a new MOBO is not cheap for a socket A AMD 2800 XP+ CPU. I think I will just sell it on Ebay or something along with the ram and stuff since I have no use for DDR memory.

Is the Pc working now? Or have you tried running it with just the Kingston?
  7. Also, I took the 512MB RAM stick out and guess what, WinXP installs just fine. So I am thinking the 512MB might be the bad thing. I am going to run more tests to check things out. So don't hold out hope here.

OK here are two errors that I am getting. I am getting a PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA and BAD_POOL_HEADER. I am getting this when I hit enter in the DOS setup of WinXP.
The 200 watt is low, but most pcs come with onboard video, one cdrom and one hardrive. I just did a power supply replacement on a dell with a p4. The supply I removed was rated at 180 watts. I agree it is better to have extra power. I guess my thought is it is better to get a good brand power supply rated at 350 watts, then a 700 watt cheaper brand.

  9. OK here is my PC

    2 kingston 256MB RAM chips

    1 Generic 512MB RAM chip

    1 AMD 2800 XP+

    1 Seagate 120GB HD

    1 CD/CDR burner

    1 DVD Burner

    1 BIOSSTAR M7NCD Pro Mobo

and the PS mentioned already. I have 3 case fans

and a live linux cd is faster than getting 85% through installing windows to have it freeze with no descriptive errors.

seriously, I love live OS distros... *very* useful.

  10. OK here is the current status.

    1) moved RAM into different slots and ran memtest and all OK after 2 passes+

    2) took Power Supply back to dealer for testing and all checked ok according to them.

    3) HDs are fine with the tests I have run from Seagate off the ultimate boot CD

    4) have low leveled them a few times now

    5) tried new cables as in IDE

    6) taken out one of the HDs to see if it is a drive issue, no because it works in another system.

Not sure what else I can do to fix the problem. I will try a linux install CD but I want to have this thing work and not have to purchase a new MOBO, RAM, CPU, and Video Card.

Let's put this in perspective folks...

He had reboots whenever he remote accessed another pc.

So he tried testing his RAM, and one stick tested bad once. (If I'm wrong, PLEASE correct me immediately!)

He tested his drives, they tested fine but had file structure issues...

He low lvl'd 'em, and try to reinstall.

    Blue screen.

Okay... this sounds to me like at least one of the following:

    Motherboard is failing

If the network card is onboard, and the IDE/SATA is onboard (wich one u using?), then perhaps the motherboard is failing.

    Power Supply is failing

It was mentioned it was cheap. It could cause all of these issues, and potentially cause PERMANENT damage.

    Ram is failing

It *did* fail a test at least once.

    My suggestion to you:

Try a live linux cd. I suggest this for a few reasons.

    1. linux should very well use the hardware at its fullest potential, much like Windows.

    2. it won't damage your hard drives (bad power could kill 'em)

ALSO DON'T FORGET TO UNPLUG ANY EXTRANEOUS DRIVES!!!

If it could be the power supply failing, lessening the over all load could buy you more time.

    Good luck!

  11. Moved memory to a different slots and ran memtest and it said all is good. Now I think the IDE slots are bad. I say this as I tried to reinstall windows and got blue screened with the DOS setup. I tried to move the drives to a different IDE slot and same result. So I am thinking that the IDE is broke. But I ran tests and things from Seagate on them and all ran just fine on the drives and the MOBO sees the drives. I am getting a something POOL error each time I try to install. Is this meaning HD, Video, or what?

did you have any luck with the memory in a different slot?
  12. No video card is ok or I would not be getting any video. That is the only thing that I think would not go out. Sound card is is on board so why would I miss with that. I am thinking that the Power Supply that I bought back in May is taking a dump on me and if it is I will just replace it. If not I think it is time for me to get a new PC of some type. I would like to get a MAC that I can play on with Windows. so it will have to be an intel machine. any thoughts.

with my own compt i found restarts

    are caused by hardware issues

like display and sound card drivers

    or virus

    or hijack

many posters do not include these issues when they post

    my suggestion

    go to device manager

and uninstall those video and sound card drivers

    then reboot

as windows will find the drivers

then go to start-control panel -sys -advanced-

    sys recovery-settings -

    and uncheck automatic restarts

    this will stop the restarts

    or is suppose to

but you need to find out why it has been giving this trouble

and at a guess i would say 3 reasons

    hardware- virus -hi-jack

  13. I am going to try moving the slots around. I tried them all in the same slot. If they give me errors in all 3 slots, then what? I have to get a new motherboard? I mean the PS is less then a year old now. I would hate to replace it again.

Kingston memory sticks do have a lifetime warranty. Try running just those two sticks together and check them with memtest. That file structure problem and the rebooting could be caused by a failing power supply.
  14. OK gang here is a doozy for you all. Recently I had my PC that worked just fine decide eh I am not going to do that now and keeps rebooting. I ran a memtest on it and it failed but could not figured out which of the 3 sticks it was. So I have pulled them all out and running tests on them by them selves. Also, before I ran any of these tests my PC would not boot and would beep.....beep.....beep at me. So I that is when I finally got it show me a message that stopped in the POST with Verifying DMI Information or something like that.

I also thought maybe my HDs were and issue so I ran the tests that seagate offers on them and they all passed even the memory one. I noticed one time the FS partion test on the HDs did not pass for both. controllers, etc all fine. Said the drives were good just not the File Structors. so I did a low level format on them both.

So I am stuck here with a PC being a pain and running memtests. BTW, 2 out of the 3 chips here are kingston. Do they not have a lifetime warrenty?

Also, here is wackyness to boot. I use logmein.com and noticed when I try to login into a remote PC my PC reboots itself. Could my video card be the problem or what? I am thinking more memory then anything. PLEASE PLEASE HELP a Brotha out.

  15. Well I just installed DD-WRT and I can not even get into my router now. I am supposing now it is a paper weight since I can't get into it now. I got into it via telnet but can't do anything with out commands. So how does one go back to other firmware?

Sometimes new official Linksys firmware have issues too. I too have a Linksys WRT54G (v2) and ever since I discovered I could use 3rd party firmware I've never went back to official Linksys firmware. I've settled with using Sveasoft Alchemy (final release) and it works pretty well on my cable connection. The router stays on 24/7 on a 3-PC network and VoIP line and is quite stable. I have it set up so that all the desktops have static LAN IPs and laptops connect by automatically obtaining LAN IPs.

'mikex' suggested this before, but you may want to look into using the DD-WRT firmware. It "exposes" a lot of hidden features of your WRT54G router and can also lead to more stable connections. Make sure you get the version specific to your version of the WRT54G if you do decide to flash. Furthermore, I've found that the "mini" versions of DD-WRT allow for faster router response. I've used DD-WRT on my Motorola WR850G wireless router and have been able to successfully use it as a wireless bridge. The help file is quite useful and I'm sure you will be able to find what you are looking for.

  16. No see there is nothing open to the outside world. I open VNC ports every now and then but mainly not anymore since I use logmein.com for everything now. So I am not sure how people could have could have connected to the servers when there is nothing open. I have checked with other routers but so far they equal same problems.

Any chance of having another router on hand to put in line to check against?

Pro'lly not since you would have done that already.

Save the config file, then reset to factory defaults, run like this for a while to check. Do you have lots of connections to the servers? You mentioned the connections before, I was wondering if users were actually logging in and working in the servers.

  17. hum. I wonder what is happening with my unit then? I mean I have it set like you have but my lease time is 9999 here since that is the only thing I could config it to. I have WPA2 on and all is fine there.

The router was configured for PPPoE. Max idle time was 9999. LAN lease was forever. Enabled remote admin, changed default port of remote admin log in.

    Everything else was default.

Oh it was a wireless router. SSID changed and encrypted with 128 WEP.

  18. OK so what setting did you have for your Linksys?

I have not had a problem with the linksys today. I run speedtest multiple times and then left it to sit for a few hours then connected and surfed wirelessly with no problems.

The DSL with businesses may be provisioned differently unless you have a service level agreement same as the business mentioned.

I am running out of ideas......sorry.

    M

  19. OK that sounds good with the router. I will call up my ISP and see what the deal is. I think it can't be to much since there are businesses that have the same type of DSL as I do and they don't loose connection.

    It is a possibility....

The ISP firewall may see it as a virus or spam traffic.

I have my neighbors linksys wireless router. I set it for connect on demand and it would not reconnect right off. I set it for 20 sec. keep alive and will try it out through out the day.
