  1. Those are the WMs I have on my computer (well, except for "other"). Personally I've grown attached to WindowMaker. I'm also curious to know your boot sequence. I start into runlevel 3 and start x/gdm/etc manually, saves time if I don't really need x for what I'm doing. Who needs that "GUI"?    ;)      :P

edit...sorry, i made a mistake: wm and windowmaker are the same thing

Right now I'm running KDE 3.2, works well. Before I was using Black Box and Gnome.

  2. I think that's a great idea as well. I, too would like to know where I can do such a thing.

Here's a site to donate Gmail.

I just went to that site you provided. What a fantastic way to support the brave men and women in the armed forces. I'm donating my Gmail invites to this cause.

  3. Could we drop a bridge on them and watch their legs curl up like the witch from The Wizard of Oz? :D

OK that was a little harsh. I'll pout and go stand in time out now. <_<

Sounds OK to me? :D I wouldn't mind seeing little troll legs curling up? Heehee!

Heh-heh, that's the thing I really like about this board, the flame wars are few and far between almost non-existant. Good to see you on the board today, chinawht :D

  4. You want to install XP first, Mandrake second.

As you said, XP won't recognize the Linux partition.

By installing Mandrake second, the Linux boot loader (LILO) will be in control.

LILO does recognize NTFS and XP partitions and will transfer boot control to XP.

Use XP to only set up the NTFS partitions you want for it.

Leave some free space for Mandrake to partition for itself.

Once XP is running, you install Mandrake.

Mandrake has partitioning routines that will let you allocate space for it.

    From Linuxquestions.org

    I agree with CurlingSteve.

One note of caution, before you install Mandrake and set-up your dual boot system back-up your data in XP in case the install goes awry and your unit is messed up. Also set-up a system restore point in XP.

  6. Both Red Hat 8 and 9 are solid Linux distros. Recently Red Hat stopped supporting that line of Red Hat products. In other words Red Hat is no longer providing security updates for 8 and 9.

Fedora Core 2 the newest version of Red Hat is an open source product that is more up to date than Red Hat 8 or 9. Fedora would be a better choice to use. Fedora does have steeper hardware requirements than Red Hat 8 or 9. Here's a link to Fedora's hardware requirements.

  7. Ok, in hitest's sig, he had a link to a page with lots of good links to other Linux information pages.

I'm looking for some good Linux Tutorial sites for beginners. (My class is using RedHat Fedora Core if that makes any difference in the tutorials.)

Yes, I know I can do a google search, but I thought that maybe some of you would be more reliable to get these links from since you know more about Linux than I do.

    Thanks in advanced!

    Hi Nerelda,

Here's a link to an old Linux FAQ that uberpenguin coded some time ago. I've received written permission from uber to link to his website. It has a lot of good information and links.

Hope that helps. In the future we may post an updated FAQ here. I hope this helps somewhat.

  9. wow, these are time i wish I had linux....  :(

If you're curious about Linux you could try out Knoppix Linux. It is a Live Linux CD. This version of Linux boots completely from your CD ROM drive without the need to install anything on your hard drive.

So you can try out Linux without messing with your Windows install. If you want to take the plunge and install Linux I'd go with Mandrake, Fedora, or Suse.

  10. The best of TTV and CFH was when they educated me and expanded my knowlede of the computer.

Not to proud to say, to this day, that's an ongoing process.

    well said handplane!

TSS and C4H have helped and educated many people including myself

its an ongoing process for all of us

I really enjoy watching Yoshi's segments and when they have some really obscure stuff on. It's fun to learn new things.
