The onboard card (if it IS onboard) is not really a card at all.. it is built into the motherboard. If the monitor connection on the back of the computer is in the same place as all of the other ports (USB,parallel,etc) it is onboard. The power supply is the large metal box with the power connectors (cords) coming out of it. Should be at the top,against the back of the computer. Your power cord plugs into it. However, I am beginning to think that if you don't know enough about computers to know what the power supply is,maybe you need to take it to someone who does.

Power supplies.....yes.I've had several Emachines over the years,and worked on a bunch more. Never have I had to replace a motherboard.Not once. Never had onboard video or sound go bad. Ever. To the original poster...you might as well go ahead and replace the power supply now...you will have to eventually. Borrow a Video card from a friend or another computer,test it and see if this solves the problem,before you buy one.

Yeah,this is something that Long-Term Opera users (myself included) have know for a long time. And you know what...independant tests have proven that its faster too.

good point but I needed the USB ports too. I had tried not one but 4 ethernet cards (tested and working) til I determined that the PCI slot was bad. And it was the only one open.

I had an older PC in my shop that didn't have an ethernet port,and only 2 UBB ports. I bought a DLink combo USB Hub/ Ethernet. Plugged it into the USB,installed the drivers (not necessary in XP) and I had ethernet,plus 3 USB ports in place of one. All of this without opening the Computer. I bought the unit on Ebay ..a box of 10 unopened new in box for $60 incl shipping. Used 2 of them,gave 1 away...sold the rest on ebay one at a time. Ended up with a small profit,overall. I assume they still make them. The easiest way I've founf to add ethernet to a computer.

For future reference and others with the same problem...the latest version of IE can be found on one of those AOL disks that you see everywhere. Just close out the AOL install when it starts,explore the CD. Its there. No download required. IN fact,the latest disk that I explored also had ad-aware on it . Those AOL disks are good for something besides coasters.

For older laptops I get parts machines on ebay. In my experience,the manufacturers don't like to sell parts.They want you to send it in and let them fix it so they can charge you $200 for a 20 minute job. Example: Compaq... I had to replace the touchpad assembly. Found a parts box on ebay for $30 including shipping. Part worked fine,about 20 minutes to install. Compaq wanted MINIMUM $100. PLus I ended up with a spare keyboard and working display for that model. I have a laptop here now (IDP Vaqero) that nobody (including Crucial,etc) seems to have even heard of. Just need some memory. Laptop Hard drives are a different size than regular desktop hard drives. As far as I know,they are universal.

Long answer...in almost every case,no. Its a matter of connections and space. Most laptops have propriotary drives. IN cases where the laptop is used as a desktop replacement, I would suggest ( to your customer) an external DVD combo drive. Watch DVDs and Burn....they are cheap enough now.

I would( not be surprized if the power supply was going bad. (This is common in EMachines) Could be overheating is well. When you say that the screen goes black do you mean that the computer is still running (fans on,power light on,etc) or is it just turning itself off?

I've seen this problem before and it very well could be that the network card is bad. If network connection is onboard try a NIC they are cheap enough.

LOve it! Those WERE the good ole days. Us Kids only had 2 channels on TV , the games we played were Monopoly and Checkers (only on rainy days). A lot more information would help. How does he connect? DSL,Cable,Dial-up? What is his set-up? Can't even hazard a guess with the info you gave.

I have a wireless mouse (2,in fact,on 2 computers) and have been told that the surface color of the pad (or desk,etc) affects the battery life.Anyone know more about this? I was told by someone that ligher surfaces extend battery life.
