  1. rclick mycomp/manage - then see the logical disk manager tool. rclik all u'r drives and reset them to UNUSED letters - temporary if u've got some letter conflict - then order them as u wish. should have added for clarity: in the diskmanger tool, u'll see the partitions in color coded sequence. u can rclik over each and choose 'change drive letter'. u can change anything cept for the system drive.
  2. xp pro = from explorer, do tools/folderoptions and then see the view tab. once there, uncheck 'simple file sharing' and hit OK. then go to u'r web folder and rclik it and choose 'sharing & security'. then see the security tab. u should see a listing of the 'default' security users/groups. u can hit 'advanced' and then uncheck 'inherit permissions ...' checkbox. this will bring up a dialog where u shoulcd choose 'copy' option. once u do that, u can add/remove permissions as u see fit. eg - only leave administrators and u'r personal account. for this to be effective, u must remove all users
  3. ?? what has she got? and what specifically does she wish to install? iow - what OS? what messenger is installed? and what is the intention here? eg - she's got win xp pro, msn messenger version x, wants msn messenger version y. since there are varying versions of 'messenger' ... name them all exactly so that it's clear what she's got and what she wants. more or less
  4. atapi.sys is IDE related. perhaps u'r HD --> hampster swap did do something can u start in safe mode? if so, check u'r devicemanager for errors.
  5. I agree, I used to say a minimum of 10GB for the XP OS partition, but now say 15-20 is optimal. Gives you room for the things which need to be on the OS partition to install there and plenty of spare room for swap file etc. Then keep anything which can go outside the OS partition on other partitions so that they do not bog it down. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> i'd also add that a non-destructive partitioner like partition magic would be a solid idea. saves aspirin down the road
  6. hi how do i delete the nfts partition to put a fts which is on win98se. im tried it before and when i got to the bit that says setup a notice came up saying this cant be setup in dos.and i was told that is because im changing back from nfts to fts. and that the drive needs to be wiped to clear it from nfts. and reset it to fts. im new at this if it was from 98se to xp i can handle that but from xp to 98se is another ball game marty <{POST_SNAPBACK}> boot u'r xp install cd and, after the f8 agreement, u can just delete partitions. then f3 exit. pu

  9. if u'r xp and u wanna make the username = the folder name, just use the file & settings xfer wizard in the system tools area. then create a new account as u see fit and reverse the process so that u'r files & settings move to the new account. once u'r happy/tested out ok, u can purge the old account. as to not seeing 'folder options' ... odd ... could be a group policy put in effect by admin. ask them
