  1. I suggested this when I first came here, and I didn't get a great response. Now I think I know why. There aren't enough modders here to support it. Frankly, there are other well moderated forums dedicated to modding, my favorite is: Yoshi.us Forums

Don't get me wrong, I love these forums. But modding tends to draw a younger crowd, and is pretty small subculture as tech goes. By spreading us out on a lot of different boards, we dilute the talent and make it harder to get help.

Having said that, I am not into the OC scene, but I would assume we are looking at the same issues.

    Just my opinion.

For those of you that are interested, Yoshi and his wife are about to have their first child (a boy). Details on his forum announcements page.

  2. You bet we need a cell/drivers law. I'm on the road 1/2 a day everyday, and 99 times outta 100 if someone does something *STUPID* they're on a dang cell..... You're right Blim, I know our locals have a "click it, or ticket" day every so often to stuff the treasury. The UK is tough on them too...

I commute in DC, where the beltway moves at about 85 miles an hour with 2 car lengths between cars in the fast lane (no exageration). Add cell drivers and aggressive dump trucks, and you get a picture of my day. I am so frustrated that I actually considered building or buying a cell jammer. The problem is, they are highly illegal. Sometimes I actually think it might be worth it if were just a fine, but I wouldn't want to go to jail. I'm too pretty for jail (not really :D).

The worst thing is, people could so improve their driving by just buying a headset. You can even get cheap phones with voice dial, I just don't get it. I occassionally have to use my cell while driving, but I keep it short and it better be important. My wife and daughter call, but after a few times of telling them to keep it short and sweet they caught on.

Now, if the traffic is at a dead stop, go ahead and talk away, but hang up when you hit 35.

  3. Oh Yeah!!!  A big handset that I can prop on my shoulder and do dishes while I talk!!!!  The "original hands free phone".  Boy, I miss those things.  Hope they bring "retro" back to landline handsets

Can you imagine seeing one of these while in traffic? Maybe with the adapter that props it on your shoulder. :D

    NOTICE:

Don't drive while talking on your cell, it's bad. :) And if you must, use a hands free headset.

  4. And Brian, he did get the AIMfix on his own (OK, he had to ask me where I had the link ;) ) and he is usually the one who does the "cootie maintenance" on the computer anyways, so he did attempt to "right his wrong"!

People used to have kids so they would work in the fields, now we have them do PC maintainence and set the clock on the VCR...:D

My daughter is building PC's now...:)

  5. Spicy food, you read my mind. Thats the one thing I miss about Britain, Indian restaurants, there aren't any around here. no decent curry

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Thai food can be spicy. I had a buddy that got their version of hot (thought he was tough) and drank 3 tubs of water trying to cool down. I like hot, but I have to be able to taste it. Luckily, I have a high tolerance. Jalepenos are my low end pepper.

Man, now I want some Thai! :)

  6. LOL...Just kidding BH...i need something funny this morning, and i just happened to play Devil's Advocate on your post...

    I should have said AOL....:)

As for the reload, it is the only sure way to kill off spyware/trojans. It is harsh, but that is the final solution.

None of the spyware tools catch everything, and none of them can actually remove ALL of what they find. Reloading is like abstinence, it work 100% of the time...:)

  7. Off to send yet another email to the kids reminding them again not to click any AIM links.....  Arrrgghhh!

end rant (but I'm still mad)

Kids being kids. What I have found works well is to make the punishment stretch out long enough so it sinks in. If my daughter had done this, I would restrict her from the computer until:

    1) she did a research paper explaining what the difference is between a virus, worm and a trojans.

    2) Maker her scan and clean the machine, researching what she found.

    3) Perform a complete reload.

This started early with us, we even made her clean her own crayon marks off the wall when she was 2. It has really helped to develop a sense of personal resposibility in her, and has kept us from having to yell as much. Don't get me wrong, she still makes mistakes, but understands it is her duty to fix them.

So did he come tell you?

  8. If you can stand intense, emotional movies, Kevin Bacon as a pedophile in The Woodsman is some serious stuff (and won't help anyone's paranoia one bit).

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I rented it not knowing what it was about, and got about 5 min in and had to turn it off. As a parent, there are some things I just don't want to see. It is hard enough letting the kid out the door as it is.

  9. Here's a thought. Do I watch Nascar or football? Hummmm, or I can surf all three like the old days "B4 husband" Funny guy, can't keep up with my surfing, he gets all confuzzled.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Weird, I do the same thing. It takes me about .25 of a second to decide if I am going to watch a show or not. My wife doesn't think that fast, and gets annoyed ocassionally. Thankfully, with Tivo it is less of a problem. I stopped 'grazing' and started watching what I wanted to watch, when I wanted to watch it.

  10. I think it is just paranoia. We see it on TV, the news puts it center stage, and we all start thinking of it as a common thing. That is what my logical brain tells me, but I still get that bad feeling every time my kid goes out to play. What kills me is these people are getting a couple of years for their crimes, and then they are set free. If we locked them up for 25 years on a first offence mandatory sentence, I would probably feel a little safer. Studies have shown you cant cure them, so keeping them away from kids is our only out.

What is bad is, this culture of fear is working both ways. On Friday I saw two kids walking in the rain in cloth hooded jackets. My 'Dad' brain said "Stop and pick them up, get them out of the rain, take them where they were going". But then I thought, they would be out of their minds to get in a strangers car, so I didn't stop.

Quite a shame that you can't even be kind anymore. 20 years ago I could have stopped and not thought anything of it.

  11. I want to know how a company cany justify selling gas at varying prices in towns 15 - 20 miles apart. Here it is $2.60, at the next town south same company $3.00 and at the next town east $3.10. My son in law said that the next one north was also $3.00 but that is across the state line. From how busy these stations arethey ought to be a little closer in price.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

They have a formula, in rural areas gas is cheaper. They sock it to people in wealthy areas. It also has to do with custom blending to meet local regs.

It's not just gas, all chaines are doing this now. Lowes, Walmart, Home depot...all regionalize prices.

Charge what the market will bare.
