  1. I am currently working my way back into the UNIX world after a long absence. In line with that, I am working my way through building a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PhP) server based on FC4. My experience predates package managers, so I thought I would ask:

    1) What is your favorite Package manager.

    2) What package manager do I absolutely need to use for the paid *NIX administration workplace.

    3) Anything I should avoid?

    TIA,

    BH

  2. There isn't much modding here, but here is one I did.

    retro-Stealthing a DVD drive:

The open switch is remoted to the faceplate using scavenged parts from an old scsi cd drive, and so is the LED (now blue).

  3. I'm looking forward to the new political forum starting up.

Brian Holiday, good to see you back here again. The Admin team is here to listen to your concerns.

I don't think there will be any more politics or religion here, his locked thread states that at the end (from BT)

I for one, plan to let it die.

It is good to be back, but I don't think I am going to be able to spend a lot of time here. My new job is going to be demanding for a while.

  4. Wrong.

Being the OP, I should know.

The intent was to share MY views, not piss off you.

They call it having an opinion.

    Anyway, it's old news now.

You are fooling yourself. Posting blatently idealogical content in an open forum, you are bound to piss someone off. That is why you were censored.

    So here are the possibilities:

    1) You were, and you just lied.

    2) You are so dim, that you didn't realize what you were doing. (I have read your posts, and I don't think you are.)

    3) You expected everyone here to agree, laugh, and move on.

As pointed out, there are plenty of places on the net to post this kind of content.

  5. I haven't been posting here, due to the new job and Christmas, but I still consider this my "home". The original intent of the picture was to piss off a Bush supporter. It wasn't tame, and it would have started a flame war.

I am one of the people here with strong political views, and I keep my mouth shut to maintain the calm that is "Besttechie". Thanks to all of you that do the same.

  6. I for one have not seen anything that bad. The worst I have seen was in a garage for a new car dealer.

Funny thing is, this kind of filth could be minimized by filtering the fans and have them all blowing into the case (except for the power supply). I did that to mine and it really helped. i really only have to worry about cleaning it once a year now.

  7. You should send this into Bill O'Reilly. He is tracking and advocating a state by state law that sets a 25 year minimum for sex offensives against children. Chances are he would put a spotlight on the situation, since it is obviously being under-presecuted. If someone grabs a kids arm, and drags then one inch to only be stopped by a mall guard, that is still kidnapping. It seems to me the guy was caught in the act...

  8. 1941. I didn't see a tv til I was 9 years old. movies were a dime and popcorn was a nickel. we walked 4 miles to get there. same distance to the school. meals were cooked on a wood burning stove. drew water from a well. telephones were party line. ring 3 long-1 short. did homework by a kerosene lamp. I still have pictures of the covered wagon we had. no locks on the door...just a button and a hook. everybody had a coon dog and a shotgun. homemade beer and "cooked" corn whiskey. radio was battery powered with an antenna wire strung across the yard. no need to say more.

Wow, this sounds like the 80's in rural Kentucky. The only difference is, we had fox hounds...

    Man that sucked!

  9. I'll add to the group. I wouldn't quit yet. For each job I have left, I have a "defining moment' that motivates me to go. It usually has to do with the exact type of situation you are in. Now I would just do it smart. Calm down and set about the task of bringing your skills up to date. Everytime you start to get mad, think to yourself "Alright you bastards, just wait until im a ready. Then two weeks notice and I am out of here." This works well for me, maybe it will for you. This relieves me of the pressure of looking for a job while unemployed, and reduces the chance of me taking a job just to pay the bills.

Good luck man, it is never easy when this kind of thing happens.

  10. Just don't let her grow up too fast!!!

Not a problem Liz. Her mother and I vowed we would give her a childhood and it has been a happy one for her so far. She is not exposed to the media and the internet, and we made a clear separation between school life and home life (no calls at night). To give you a hint, we just had to explain to her what 'getting high' meant (she heard it in the hall at junior high). Hopefully I will be able to put her back in private school next year, public school isn't living up to our expectations.

If your 22 year old has a boyfriend that isn't treating her right you should suggest she listen to Dr. Laura. At first I hated her guts, and overtime it sinks in. Life is too short to waste time on bad relationships, and young women tend to hang on to bad relationships. Dr. Laura spends a lot of time talking about how to see a good or bad character in a mate. And once you have found one, how to keep them feeling loved. She has books out on the 10 stupid things men do to mess up their lives, and one of my favorites, "The proper care and feeding of Husbands"...:)

  11. Bozodog, we've done that!!  My only hope is that when she is ready, she dumps him, don't want to deal with some jerkguy breaking my baby's heart!!  Fortunately, as often as she gets mad at him (late last night, matter of fact!)  I have a feeling her heart won't get broken.  Ahhh, it's a waiting game, and hopefully there isn't a marriage before the game ends!

How old is she? I am always interested in hearing what works, I have a 12 year old. I don't have a lot of personal experience with raising girls, there are primarily Boys in my family.
