  1. Wow! Why would you jump a motherboard fan socket? Must always read the labels next to any socket on the motherboard. Notice the "REAR_FAN1" label?

As already advised, it is probably best to get another motherboard, although you will probably looking at having to do a repair install of Windows in the best case scenario. The worse case is if Windows came with the HP PC which only provides recovery CDs/partition; Windows may refuse to repair with such a major hardware component out of the hardware profile.

If you do get a motherboard replacement ensure that it supports the same CPU socket type and RAM as the old one so you can recycle some of your components.

  2. You may also want to go into the Internet Properties > Connections > LAN Settings and put a check mark in "Automatically detect settings". If that doesn't work you can to run the Network Connection Wizard.

If all else fails, go to Internet Properties > Advanced > Reset Internet Explorer Settings and click "Reset".

  3. The i386 folder, especially those created on PCs that use recovery CDs/DVDs or even recovery partitions, will contain drivers for hardware devices because they were the drivers that came with the PC.

The i386 folder found on retail XP installation CDs contains all of the information required for installation. You will also see an i386 folder in C:\WINDOWS, but this one is a little different as you cannot use it to perform an installation because it contains changes made after installation to suit your particular system. However, the i386 folder is usually where driver information is stored (this is where slipstreaming applications put the drivers).

  4. Yes, I agree with 'mikex'; you should just set everything back up from the start.

    1. Disable all file shares and File & Printer Sharing on PCs using the network.

    2. Go into the Device Manager and locate the network adapter that is being used to connect you to your LAN. Go to 'Properties' > 'General' tab > 'Configure' > 'Power Management' tab > and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". Apply settings.

    3. Make sure that the "Computer Browser" service is set to start automatically (Start > Run > services.msc).

    4. Reboot your PCs.

    5. On each PC run the Network Setup Wizard ensuring that File & Printer Sharing is activated and that the workgroup name is exactly the same on all networked PCs.

    6. Re-activate your network shares by accessing "Sharing & Security" from each drive's/folder's right-click menu. I would also recommend that the 'Share name' not include any spaces or punctuations, e.g. instead of My Documents, use MyDocuments, mydocuments or My-Documents.

    7. Reboot all PCs and make sure that they are running for a good 5 minutes before you try accessing network shares. I know this sounds silly, but Windows may need some time to re-establish connections.

    8. Go into My Network Places. Do you see your shares? If not, try clicking on "View Workgroup Computers" from the left-side menu and double-clicking on your workgroup name. Do you see your PCs' names listed? Double-click on these to see what they have to share.

    9. If you access shares often you may consider "Adding a network place". Essentially, this just adds a shortcut to whatever share you access a lot to a location you specify. Similarly, you can also run the "Map network drive" feature from within 'My Computer' > 'Tools'.

  5. I just downloaded and installed the Opera web browser and I'm lovin' it already! It's very fast compared to Firefox on my PC; the response to my input is smooth and rapid!

Anyway, I like the featureset of Firefox and would like to see if I can get some of those same things on Opera. Is there an "Adblock" plug-in that I can use with Opera? I would like to import my Firefox filterset if possible.

Secondly, I noticed that my installation of Opera 9.2 doesn't load Windows Media streaming videos such as those found at MSN Video. I always get the Microsoft prompt telling me that I should use Internet Explorer and to download WMP. However, I have no problem playing these same videos in Firefox 2.0.0.3. I'm currently using WMP10 under WinXP Pro with SP2.

    Thanks a bunch!

  6. Are you sure you bricked it? If I remember correctly DD-WRT changes the default router IP from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.0.1 or something like that. To confirm (assuming your NIC is set to receive a LAN IP from the router automatically) check your LAN connection status. What does it report for 'Default Gateway' and 'DNS Server'? Whatever IP this is (should be the same in both cases) this is the LAN IP of your router. Access the router's web setup interface using this IP in your web browser.

BTW, which version of DD-WRT did you use?

In case it is actually bricked you can try the following:

You'll need the Linksys TFTP utility and to do some NIC configuring. I recorded how I debricked my Motorola WR850G and doing so with the WRT54G should be similar. Just don't install Motorla firmware onto the Linksys! Lol! Use the Linksys firmware and flash with the TFTP utility.

    • Before you perform a flash ensure that you reset the router to "manufacturer's defaults" no matter if the previous firmware was a Linksys official firmware or 3rd party firmware. This can be done through the web interface or by pressing the 'Reset' button for ~15 seconds.
    • Flash with the firmware that is compatible with your specific make/model of router! Brick a router with another router's firmware and it can become even more difficult to debrick.
    • Make sure that you aren't using the internet connection at the time of the flash!
    • DO NOT disturb the flashing process even if it hangs for a bit!
    • At the end of a successful flash let the router sit (and reboot automatically) for ~3 minutes. After this time press and hold the 'Reset' button for ~15 seconds and let it rest again. Continue with setup configuration as normal.

  7. Same here. I've gotten all of the XP hotfixes to date and haven't gotten any of these errors (as yet!). I don't think the problems persons are experiencing have to do with IE7 or WMP11, because I have them installed and they're running smoothly. However, there are those rare occasions when the update to IE7 or WMP11 goes awry and that can lead to other problems down the line.

I choose to be notified of updates instead of automatically letting WU download and install them in the background. I feel that if important system files are going to be updated and patched it might as well get all system resources to be dedicated to the task.
