I have D/L and installed sp3 on my Dell Millennia and so far have had no problems. I had also had IE7 installed and working before I D/L SP3. Back in March I tried to D/L IE7 on my son's Compaq Presario but it would not open and I could never find the reason why, so I just left IE6 on his computer. My question is this. If IE7 won't work on his computer and I D/L SP3, will he still be able to use IE6 since it won't let you revert back to IE6? Or should I forget about SP3 for now? Thanks

Thanks for all the help shanenin and all the rest of you who responded. I got the (ATI Rage 128 Ultra Video Card - 16MB, AGP 2x/4x, VGA, Video Card) this afternoon. The end of the metal clip was to short to connect to the back of the computer. So I just took a pair of pliers and bent the end up straight and installed it. After I hooked the monitor to it and booted up---it worked. So it was the onboard video that was bad. I now am back to normal on his computer. He was very lucky that was the problem. Now the people who sent it to me said if it worked to send them $10 or if it didn't, to send

Thanks shanenin As I said before I know nothing about cpu's or motherboard's, so if my questions sound dumb just bear with me. Do these boards come with the cpu installed or do I have to buy one? If I do what kind(specs) do I buy? Thanks

Thanks------The Dragon Slayer I know absolutely nothing about how to mix and match cpu's and motherboard's. My son wants to know if these two items would work in his SR1012NX computer. He thinks he can get them for about $130.00. Is that a good price if it will work in his computer? Did you replace the motherboard with the same number and what is the specs on your AMD? My son's SR1012NX on compaq's web site, since that is the only way I can get any specs now, says his cpu is either: AMD Athlon ( XP 3000+ 2.167GHz *Advanced 333 MHz front side bus or AMD Athlon ( XP 3400+ 2.167GHz *Advanced 333 MHz front side bus So I don't know what he should get. Has any one had any experience with a device called "CPU & Motherboard PC Analyzer Card? I'm beginning to think he would be better off buying another discount computer for what he will end up putting in this one.

Tried the other power supply but it did not make any difference. I put the compaq power suppy back in and removed the ram. Turned on computer and got one long beep. Replaced ram and got nothing. Looks like I am down to the video, cpu or motherboard.

The Compaq power supply is 250 watts. I have a power supply that I removed from an old Gateway. It is Model number ATX93-3405. It is 185 watts. Could I use this to check if power supply is the problem?

Thanks TT_75. I'll call them to send it. As I understand it is supposed to be new in the box. If it works we can then go for a better one. I'll post back with results in a few days. Thanks everyone.

There is a AGP slot so would this cheap card work to tell me if it is the video? ATI Rage 128 Ultra Video Card - 16MB, AGP 2x/4x, VGA, Video Card Found someone who will mail it to me if it will work in his computer. Presario SR1012NX Motherboard is an ASUS A7N8X-LA Thanks

The motherboard is: ASUS A7N8-LA I believe. Don't see a video card---only onboard video port. Does this mean we will have to replace the motherboard? You could try installing a video card to see if your problem is resolved. If you have one or know someone with a spare, pop it in, load the drivers and see. Don't have any kind of card nor do we know anybody that does. How do I determine what kind of card to get?

New problem. I have give up trying to fix IE7. This evening I noticed my son's screen was black. I turned off the computer and then turned it back on. No beep---No error screen. Screen still black. I tried another monitor, another HD cable, same results. Tried HD that I had installed xp on but at that time it would not let me activate it, same result. Replaced cmos battery same result. All fans are running and HD's do spin. Does it look like the Bios chip has gone bad?

OK-- I went to the sys32 folder and scrolled down to wpa.dbl and copied it to the floppy, but could not find a wpa.bak file nor could a search find it. Hooked master HD back up and searched for it there to no avail. I know I saw a bak file the other day. I then hooked up spare HD again and installed xp-sp2 home from my cd. After install went to safe mode, renamed wpa file and then copied original wpa to sys32 folder. Rebooted and it still wants to activate before I can download updates. Ran Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool and the product key did not match the key on the case. This

Thanks JSKY. I wondered if i should have copied the bak file but the instructions I had saved a long time ago only had the dbl file listed. He has no xp cd as his computer only has a recovery partition. I will try again tomorrow when my son goes to work. I would like to make a fresh install and then see if 7 will open before I do anything else.

Automatically Detect Settings had a check mark so I unchecked it and rebooted. 7 still won't connect. Uninstall 7 and go back to 6 and reboot, then reinstall 7, same results with either check mark in or out. I can try www.msn, microsoft, yahoo, google or besttechie and it just sets there trying to connect with no results. I saved a copy of wpa.dbl to a floppy. I took my copy of xp-sp2 Home and installed it on his spare HD. Did not activate and finished install and then went to safe mode. I renamed wpa.dbl and then installed original from floppy and rebooted. That didn't work as it ask me to a

Thanks JSKY. Uninstalled KB942615 rebooted twice. Installed IE7 from MS update, rebooted twice and still get error message.
-
I agree, if I had only downloaded it one time. I have D/L it from Microsoft updates more time than I can count now. I reboot twice before trying to open and reboot twice after each uninstall. I have just now cloned the HD and then uninstalled IE7 and then went to the restore partition and did a system restore. After reboot I tried IE and it would not connect. Firefox will connect. I have spent some time getting rid of HP's junk so I can work on it. Now to find why IE won't connect.

Uninstalled Firefox--rebooted--reinstalled IE7, still doesn't coonect to internet. IE6 does. Uninstalled JKDefrag,Legacy,MGI photosuite and wordweb. rebooted and reinstalled IE7. Still doesn't work. Nothing else to remove is there?
-
OK---I have removed programs from the cloned drive and rebooted after each removal but it still won't work. I have even uninstalled IE7 after every third program removal and reinstalled but to no avail. This is all that is left in ADD/REMOVE: ABBY Fine Reader 5.0 Sprint Agere System PCI Software Compaq Connections (unable to uninstall) Java JKDefrag Legacy MGI photosuite Mozilla FireFox Nivida Display driver Nivida Ethernet Driver Nivida Gart Driver Startup Monitor Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893503) Windows IE7 Windows xpsp2 Wordweb I don't think there is anything left to remove. I am wondering
-
Yes--- that was the first thing I did. I updated everything and ran them first. Then started on the step by step procedure. Right now I am removing a program at a time and rebooting to see if I can find the problem.

IE7 is going to see MY DARK SIDE if it doesn't start cooperating! WHOA!!---Getting mad never solved a problem and when you go beating on an inanimate object, You only end up hurting yourself. Tomorrow I will clone the other H/D and then remove all the programs and browsers(except IE6). IE7 should install and open to the internet. I'll then add programs until I find the one causing the problem. This all I can think to do at this time.
-
Well, the other H/D didn't make any difference either. I guess I could remove everthing on that H/D with ADD/REMOVE except updates and IE6 and then install IE7. That should tell me something.

Hi Pete. Thanks for the input. Before I started this thread I first tried the support from microsoft page and started with the first method and worked my thru all 12 or 13 methods, rebooting after each one, and nothing worked. I had already tried the "No Add-ons" and it did not work either. I agree with you it has to be a program or something he has downloaded, that I have yet to find, that is the problem. I am now reinstalling IE7 to try something else. If it does not work again I am going to use his backup HD that I cloned several weeks ago and see if IE7 will work on it. If it does I can

We are on cable internet so there is neither of those in the system. I have been looking for anything that pertains to Norton or Smantec that was left over from earlier uninstalls. When I find anything I remove it and reboot, but still can't get IE7 to open. I am removing programs that are not in use to see if that might be the problem. I don't think it is, as I tried to open IE7 in safe mode and it still would not open. Thanks for the suggestions.

No-- this is the original XP sp2 home that came with the Compaq computer. There is no xp cd, only a recovery partion. However I do have a legal xp sp2 cd for my computer. I can uninstall IE7 and go back to IE6 and it works.
