  1. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

Huby and I are hardly speaking... well now it's not what you thought either (though I admit we have been stressed out abit with all this new season of our lives stuff to figure out but haven't gotten mad enough to quit speaking!!!)...We just have a light case of a larnygitis(sp?) bug.... can't spell or type either...fuzzy headed too, or fuzzier than usual I should say. He's better than me, he got it first. So will do a nice ham dinner for him tomorrow, though I may just eat soup.

As for going down to NZ, that is one of things I have always wanted to do!!! How about it Liz? We just need to win the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes!!!

Marty, how have you been doing, and have the Drs figured out what is going on from your tests? I haven't been on the boards much this past week or so, just saw somewhere that you were having angina pains and tests. I sure hope and pray that you will recover completely from them. Modern medicine has come along ways to be able to help people with various heart problems since my Dad suffered many years ago with both Diabetes and heart problems.

    Merry Christmas folks.

  2. And here folks is an article from our Oregonian tv columnist, that adds perspective to this whole tragedy and why we became so wrapped up in the unfolding events.

Also I want to add that many many people and organizations and government agency people here in Oregon and around the country freely gave of their time and money to search for the Kims. Most did the best they could to find them. Only a few missed the mark of doing all they should have when they should have. I should have emphasized (sp?) that point earlier. The same with all the groups working on Mt Hood, many many volunteers and professionals in both cases doing whatever it takes to find the lost, hopefully alive.

It was posted the 12th, so wont be freely available for long.

  3. Hello Marty,

I don't know what the problem is with why they can't or wont communicate all tips and info to each other, other than they just don't want to do it. Stubborn refusal to share information outside own group? Incompetence? Unwilling to do what's right?Perhaps the person(s) can't see the big picture or unwilling to for whatever reason. I just don't know. And the worst thing is I don't think this agency sharing information problem will get solved anytime soon.

This refusal to share information, and anything else that would benefit group or effort, often happens in the work place, especially in big companies, and I know it happens in all levels of government. Doubt it is only our country either.

Just seems like it's human nature to hold onto information in own little cliques or to build little fiefdoms of power, possibly done to seem more important than really are in the organization???

But when it comes to it a loss of life such as this case, I can't imagine how those people can live with their conscience. Although they may try to excuse it by blaming others, they must know in their hearts their own part in the tragic loss of life. Not to take away from mistakes the Kim family made, but when the rescue people also make major mistakes because of lack of communication...so sad an outcome from the totality of it all.

I also don't think a lawsuit will help any, only spread the blame around, instead of narrowing it down to specific instances so that people will have to take responsibility for their own actions/inactions.

As I have said on G4 thread, there is alot we can do personally to better prepare for any trip, even a commute to work that can turn ugly, by stocking up a car with survival gear. And every trip we take we have choices, and every choice has consequences that are not always what we intend. So plan ahead, learn what it takes to survive on own if need be, pack a survival kit, and every decision you make work through the what ifs, and don't be afraid of spending extra time/money to stay safe if trip plans get messed up or changed...whether that means getting a motel along the way instead of pushing onward to some reserved place further on, or backtracking if you miss an exit. Plan and make decisions on everything as if your life depended on what you do....because it does!!!

  4. Here is a link to a news story about how many many people in Washington state, and also mentioning the Gresham Oregon (Eastern suburb of Portland) family I referred to earlier, are suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning from trying to stay warm during recent storm and it's power outages. Heartbreaking that it has killed one and others including children are so sick.

Many suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning due to improper generator/charcoal grill use

Another story on the storm, including another safety hazzard, CANDLES, that killed 2 people on Oregon Coast. So many times fires are caused by candles....I wonder if they have now surpassed ciggarettes (sp?) as cause of most domestic fires?

The story also brings up propane heaters, another big safety issue. And I know one gal that heats her drafty old farmhouse with wood stove when she has wood available and the rest of the time uses propane heaters....and sleeps with them on...yes multiple ones!!! She wont listen to me or anyone else...says house is so drafty, and it's broken windows etc will keep her safe...or not...she doesn't care she says!!! Yikes!!!

Many still blacked out after deadly storm

    Stay safe folks!!!

  5. Thanks everyone, and hugs to all  , especially Mac!!!:wub:

Hubby heard today the power was back on for most, if not all, the Beaverton folks affected by the burning substation, their power was switched from other substations around the area, and as of early this morning the fire was still burning. The overworked people on those line crews all over the state must have really been discouraged when that transformer at substation exploded!!! They have been working so hard and so many long hours to get everyone's power back up. Praise God for their valiant efforts in all kinds of weather!!!

Here is a link to a Katu tv news story about the Washington state part of the storm.

Transformer fire causes widespread power outages

As for the missing Mt Hood climbers, searches by that special plane found evidence last night? of a snow cave, and the helicopter today found what looked like a snow cave marked with ski pole? and rope, and a large Y carved in ice. But the searchers, who were lowered from the chopper, found an empty snow cave with sleeping bag, and ice pick etc in it with no sign of the men. I wonder if it is hypothermia setting in to leave behind that very essential ice pick tool, and the sleeping bag? Fox News had some of the most gorgeous close-up detailed live photos of Mt Hood that I have ever seen. Shows how very rugged the mountain really is. Even though it was a clear sunny day, it was still in teens or lower for temperature up that high. Didn't hear a wind report but wind didn't appear to be a factor today. Very experienced military helicopter crew and search people, having served in Afghanistan mountains up there today doing this extremely hazzardous search.

Hubby just heard (3:30pm PST) a breaking news item that they found one climber dead found in another snow cave as searches came back down the mountain. So sad!!!

It also is being reported on Fox News.

  6. Heh, my griping about a slow Internet connection is a petty issue. But, over the last three weeks my life has been very stressful. There's nothing worse than worrying about your family!

Three weeks ago I noticed a small mole on my daughter's forehead, it has a very strange colouration. So I took her to the Doctor and he alarmed me greatly by saying that we needed to remove it immediately. I had to wait one week before a biopsy was performed, and then wait another week for the results. Thankfully, the results came back and my daughter does not have skin cancer. Some of my daughter's skin cells are atypical, and the mole will need to be completely removed after Christmas, but, the cells are not cancer!! At the same time we were waiting for the biopsy results my wife contracted bronchitis and was very sick. We've put this behind us.

The best Christmas present I've ever received came early this year. My wife and daughter will be okay. There is a God. :D

Praise God, for the good report on the mole, and that your wife is better too.

Yes there is a God and He loves you and everyone else!!! John3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life". Hallelujah!!!

  7. I am so ashamed of our state and county search efforts being so hampered by miscommunication, even at times no cross communication, between agencies!!! I am not letting off the federal government either since the BLM was part of problem with gates not being shut and locked on Nov 1st as employees were directed to do but they decided on own not to do it and didn't tell their superiors they didn't do their job and why not, and should be fired in my opinion!!!

Today's Sunday Oregonian has a long heartbreaking article on the search and what went wrong!!!

Perhaps if there had been a coordinated approach, with full communication, to the search, the outcome would have been complete success and everyone of the family would be alive now!!!

Again I am so ashamed of my state's failure!! You would think after all the hoopla and special training days since 9/11, that this would have been solved not only for major disastors, but personal ones like this. What a waste of money if the agencies don't change the way they operate! I don't know if other states have same problems, but suspect they do. Time, way past time, that they figure out how to get all the information, tips, etc to all groups working on a search etc. Time to get away from governmental agencies, and all the various departments within them, building fiefdoms of power and unwilling to change that structure to even save lives. This has been reviewed, trained for, money and time spent on it over and over again....how many times must they do it before they get the message to work together? How many times must things go wrong, and investigations afterwards point out what, when, and how it happened before they admit they need to seriously get it to work right no matter whose little power trip gets skewered??? Sorry but am just heartbroken over the what ifs and if onlys, and to know the outcome might have been one of total success if only....!!

Here is the link to the Oregonian article...well worth reading if only to pressure your own local and state and federal agencies in your own area to learn from our botched search job.

The Oregonian normally only has free access to their online articles for 14 days.

    Confusion hampered search for Kims

  8. Just heard breaking Ch12 news that a transformer exploded and now a substation is on fire in Beaverton, a suburb west of Portland. Yikes!!! So another 50, 000 people with no power, at least for a few hours until they can switch out power from other substations, sure hope that doesn't bring more trouble elsewhere!!!

Just saw your post Liz after I posted this, bless you my friend!!!

  9. Hello dear friend,

Thanks so much for the prayers!!!

Yes we have had some nasty weather, November broke all records for rain amounts, then a break for a week or so in Dec, then back to more rain. Oh yes had a spell of real cold nasty temps and a dusting of snow for a few days too, and snow flurries again possible tonight. Then just to spice things up, the other day we had one of the worst wind storms in many years for the NW. I think we probably had sustained winds here at the peak of storm around 60mph, with gusts maybe as high as 70. Many areas of metro area had lots of trees, power poles and lines down on roads and houses, same with rural areas especially the coast. Lots of people without power, but we only had blips on and off. Of course had computer stuff all unplugged. Oh we also had quite a bit of lightening for added drama, and an inch or two of rain. The odd thing was we had a record breaking or tying high temperature of 60F. So didn't feel to cold even when outside!!! Sure glad it wasn't a severe cold front or we would have had an unbelievable for this area blizzard. The mountains got alot of snow and at higher elevations on Mt Hood, where the missing climbers are, wind was blowing around 95 mph or more!!! Oregon coast had horrendous winds even for them! Mt Hebo near Tillamook at 3100 feet had 114mph!!! Places right along the beaches had in upper 90mphs gusts. Yikes!!!

Lots of people still without power through out the region. Yes folks we do get some nasty wind storms here in Oregon and in Washington!!!

Only damage, Praise God, that we had here was one and a half sections of the neighbor's 6 foot high fence and his tall (about 8 foot?) heavy, ugly ivy trellis blew over into side of our house. What a bang it all made when it hit house!!! So in a wind lull, we went out and pushed it back over into his yard, before it did any more damage than scraping paint on our place. One section of it was only leaning against my vine maple small tree so braced fence over the other way with one of the good boards off other section before a gust of wind could push it and my tree over!!! I sure hope he doesn't try to rescue that awful ivy, it would have runner branches crawl through and under the fence every year...gave me the creeps!!! Plus found out a few years back while pulling the stuff out of fence, and ground on our side, that I was allergic to it. Itched worse than poison ivy ever did which I never really had a problem with. And ivy has been on the noxious weed list for several years here due to the birds carrying bits and pieces of it up into natural areas and Forest Park etc where it just takes over and even kills trees eventually circling them and choking them out (like mistletoe does). As for the fence it was rotting out in places and only a matter of time before it gave trouble.

Sure glad that the elderly couple across street had their worst trees taken out this summer!!! One had already leaned over on garage last winter or was it spring...can't remember right now. So am glad those are gone. As for the other big ones around here, they did alot of swaying but still stood, including the one that could come as far over as our place, even it's one huge dead branch stayed on the tree!!! So we were very lucky to have so little damage in neighborhood, and no long stretch without power, only blips.

Thanks again for your thoughts and prayers for us. Please pray for the searchers on Mt Hood as they try to find those missing climbers. Conditions have been very very dangerous up there and it is scary to think of possibly some of them being swept away in an avalanche or making a misstep in blinding snow and wind conditions while trying to find and save the climbers who may or may not even be alive now. Very dangerous for Black Hawk helicopters, and the big (can't remember was it a C10...looked like one of those old ones in old movies) plane with special sensing equipment too, which could set off avalanches with vibration of rotors/motors etc. Severe avalanche danger along with heavy snow fall, and winds. Not a good time to be up there. Only good window today and tomorrow it looks like to find them.

We have been busy doing not much of anything but manage to waste hours of time doing it. Ha!

Yes, sooner or later we will get this new season of our lives figured out, but in the meantime...sigh! Ha!

    Love to everyone.

  10. Sorry about just now playing catch up on 2 or 3 weeks of threads.

This is such an important thread. Thanks for reminding everyone to use heaters etc safely!!!

Be sure there is plenty of open space around them!!! Read how much the manufacturer says to do, then add an additional foot or more to what it says, just to be safe!!!

By the way, whatever happened to the law requiring all space heaters to have tipover turn offs? This law was in effect in the early 70's. But we bought a couple of oil filled radiant heat space heaters this year and also got a couple of free little multiple-setting fan forced heaters (which we use just for the fan only setting to spread the heat from the oil filled one around the room). None of them have tipover turn off thingys!!! Long time brand too, which I can't think of right now and to lazy to get up and look. Was absolutely amazed that they didn't have it. We are verrrrrry careful of any heaters, electric, and wood stoves etc, but still would be scared to use these if we had kids or pets running around!!!

May I add this warning to the thread, to never ever use a generator in an enclosed space, even a garage with the doors open.

A local family is now in the hospital with carbon monoxide poisoning due to one left on in a garage during a recent power outage. Even with garage doors left open, the whole family is very ill, especially the youngsters. So so sad, so preventable....!!! Have CO2 detector that has battery backup, not just ac as some just plug in with no backup, and properly locate them according to the manual instructions.

Of course the generator should be placed far enough away from your or neighbors house, garage, etc to not allow any fumes (remember no odor to CO2) inside. And it should always be on only when you are able to fully supervise it, and not left on and ignored, and certainly not left on while sleeping. Have plenty of blankets or sleeping bags on hand for overnight use to stay warm instead of running a generator at night during a power outage (or take family to a motel outside outage area to stay warm if needed). And don't worry about refrig/freezer food, your lives are worth more than some lost food, and most likely your food will still be ok if you do use generator a couple of times a day and keep refrig/freezer doors closed!!! Also if you are going to use a generator, be sure to store your gasoline in proper vented containers...not those rinky dink gas cans you tote to station when you run out of gas for car or lawn mower...and be careful where you store them to not have fire/explosion hazzard for instance do not put anywhere near the gas pilot light on the water heater in garage etc.

Even with motorhomes in campgrounds someone running their generator can sicken, or even kill, a nearby rving family, or themselves, with fumes coming into the units through vents/windows/etc.

    So be careful folks!!!

    Pat

    God bless everyone

  11. TT, I am so sorry to hear of your tool (s) being stolen, am betting it was more than one gone once you keep on checking/remembering what you had there as greedy thieves usually take big and small stuff both.

I get so mad at thieves of all stripes, I just end up sputtering...not even able cuss, which is good I guess.... but oh how if I catch them in the act can I ever tell them off!!!

Over the years, we have had the company's and our work tools stolen out of car, and have had home tools and more that just "walk off" etc. It never gets any easier to understand how people can steal from others, especially a working man's work tools.

It seems like it is growing into a huge serious problem at construction sites of all kinds. From stealing appliances out of apartments/condos/homes, to even yanking out the wiring and other metal to sell for salvage, to the tools used to build those places!!! Unbelievable the people stealing the stuff, the middle men selling it, and lets not forget the just as guilty ones who buy stolen goods. If caught those people excuse it by oh well it is covered by insurance....which most likely with high deductables nowadays it isn't, or if a claim is put in and paid then rates go up (and not just for the insured who made the claim but everyone else). GGGGGRRRRRRRRR!!!!! I hate thieves!!!!

I hope you get your stuff back TT, and the thieves will get something to remind them it wasn't a good idea to take the stuff in first place. I have never done any revenge stuff, but sure have considered it a few times!!! Personally I think the justice system will fail in such issues thereby creating a climate of it's ok to take stuff as long as it is under whatever the local limit is to prosecute, so no problem even if caught. I advocate shame as a great deterrent to doing crime, so lets bring back the modern equivalent of town square stocks to stick the guilty parties from thieves to buyers in and we can pelt them with insults and rotten fruit to shame them into straightening up their miserable lives. Ok, so I am not PC and the ACLU would take me to the cleaners for even suggesting stocks as a alternative sentence, but something has to change and fast or society will only continue it's downhill slide!!!

  12. Hi everyone,

More coffee woes... hiting the pot's on switch in the morning then coming back after shower to find out I forgot to put coffee grounds in the night before..only water that is now hot...ugh!!! Tricky thing, our memory!!!

Now for what happened today, being woken up at 3:30 AM by a screeching alarm next door. Didn't know if it was a serious alarm about something in his workshop/garage, or ??? But very loud monotone that just went on and on and on and on and he didn't do anything about it. One neighbor tried to wake him up at his front door after checking out his backyard and determining it was his car not the garage. I called another neighbor to see if they had his phone number....nope. Finally called the non-emergency police number who sent out a patrol car to find out what was going on. Lady cop pounded on front door, rang bell, used her flash light to see if any life on main floor. I told her the neighbor I called had informed me the guy slept in the basement...she said how can he sleep through all this...I said maybe deaf? Anyhow she said "I'm going to go back to backyard and disconnect that d... car battery!!! In exasperation after only hearing the very loud alarm a few minutes, she asked how could anyone sleep through that awful noise? He finally came out as she (I assume it was the cop but couldn't see for sure) stopped the alarm somehow, so I don't know if she pounded on his basement window or if he finally decided to come out and disarm it himself after an hour and twenty minutes. Anyhow finally peace and quiet. So went back to bed to warm up under electric blanket... brrr!!!. Did I mention it was 28 degrees and heavy frost and some slick black ice so we didn't want to try to walk down/up steps to get to his place, didn't want to chance another bad fall.

So the neighborhood had to endure a stupid alarm for over an hour that owner either couldn't hear in far corner of his basement, or he just didn't want to go out in cold to deal with it. Grrrr!!!! So why have an alarm in the first place? Selfish, or at least inconsiderate of others, and this is not the only example. If he is really deaf (which I doubt since he talks to and answers people when he wants to) or even partially deaf as I have suspected over the years he's been there, I sure hope he has smoke detectors in house (all levels) with stobe lights to wake him up in a fire!!!

So okay folks, thanks for letting me blow off steam!!!

    Pat

    God bless everyone
