  1. Hello Joe,

Wow that is something to think about for sure. What a mess this internet world is if we can't trust an innocent looking/sounding Google link to either an image or a site article etc.

Did you have safe search on on your Google search? (under preferences also safe search works whether you have the toolbar or just go to Google search from a link as I do now.)

Have you checked the image on Google with right click properties to see who or what it is? Or the site that hosts it?

I read a warning a long time ago on that other board, by Pete I think, about how hot links (which at the time I thought was a hot Italian sausage to give everyone a laugh at how little I know), could be a board problem due to the nature of the beast being able to be changed to a totally different article/item whatever at any time by linked site. But never actually heard anyone having that happen. Now with images, I know they can be manipulated to some extent....just look at some of the avatars etc that change to a different image, but from thumbnail to larger picture would think it would stay the same ...or not?

I saw you had posted the phrase, but don't remember a link/thumbnail or whatever it was there but if it was at the time I looked then I just didn't notice it.

I figure people here are careful about links so I trust the regular posters (though I do wait and see what new folks are like first), so a mouse hover is all I do before I check most links here out...that is if I see it or have the time to look.

Folks do let us know if you know how this could have happened...maybe Sultan who is the KING of links, and definitely knows his images might give us some insight on this potential risky link idea if it is or not.

    Take care Joe,

I always enjoy your train of thought on the Word Association thread. And I sure find it interesting to read several pages of word associations when I am catching up after being absent for a few days. Sometimes it is almost comical to read them all.

  2. Something I thought of while rereading this thread, with auto backup programs...if you got hit with a virus or other bad junk...wouldn't your auto backup be transferring that virus or whatever to the other hard drive? Perhaps scheduling a full scan/cleanup of computer before the backup would prevent damage to stuff on second hard drive. I always scan with my F-Secure Internet Security before doing any backups...to flash or to cd just to be as sure as I can that what is backed up is clean enough to replace anything I lost for whatever reason.

  3. You are welcome. Glad I could clarify it for you and others.

I just thought it sounded a bit fishy even though this non techie gal wasn't sure of the alphabet soup label but thought it sounded like Tech not Drugs, so decided to see what the site was all about, next step would have been to go to one of the urban legend sites to see if they had anything like that story.

  4. Mike I am so sorry about what happened to your Aunt.

All of these cases are so sad, both for the victim, the abuser/murderer, and everyone connected with them.

Lots of what ifs and if onlys can be thought of, but nothing changes the reality of bad choices made even worse by escalated control-freak violence.

I narrowly escaped from an abusive situation (1st husband). The only reason I am alive is he didn't have the guts to actually pull the trigger or to beat me to death all the times he tried to for which I am very thankful!!! But escape wasn't easy way back then, and still isn't for women (and children) caught in the trap of bad choices putting their lives at risk.

I have written PMs back and forth with women and kids on other boards who are living nightmares of current or past situations that make my past look like a walk in the park. Yet they are managing to survive the best they can either as finally free of the situation or still stuck in it trying to solve an unsolvable problem. We should continually pray for and support those who are in such emotional and physical distress over past or present abuse, whether on the boards, or in the news, or in the neighborhood, in the workplace, or in church (yes I said church! unbelievable but true that Christians are just as likely to abuse as anyone else...and use the Bible against the victims...man of house/obey or else!).

A recent case here, a high school principal was accused of abuse by his new wife, he denied it...high school said he stays on job until trial, she backed downed when DA said not enough proof to take him to court....she committed suicide that day or next after getting the DA report...he is being supported "in his grief" by the entire school board and teachers etc...but not by all the community....and interestingly not be alot of the students!!!

A case a few years back up in Tacoma Wa. The police chief was an abuser, his wife left, he got visiting rights to kids and on one of the exchange days he shot her dead with their kids waiting in the car, then shot himself dead too, and now the kids have no one. Seems after the fact that the entire police department and city officials knew he was violent and had made threats to kill his wife and had abused her too, and they did nothing to help her, and he kept his job. Though getting fired over it might have triggered a violent attack too, in this case and one above as in many others where anything and everything can set the abuser off.

I am going to quit now and have a good cry, then will Praise God for getting me out before I became another murdered victim.

But before I go, if anyone wants some links for abuse victims you know to help them with ideas of how to leave in safest way...just ask. I will come back later and add them to this thread.

  5. Just in case anyone takes the story to seriously and starts ranting and raving about the kids on drugs or the teachers not knowing much about tech (or drugs), here are the first couple of paragraphs found on the site's ABOUT section.

"Called "the world's greatest tech humour site" by The Register, BBspot creates entertainment for the geekier side of the world. BBspot produces a variety of features like fake news stories satirizing the tech and political worlds, the BBspot Mailbag which pokes fun at the Believers (people who believe our fake news) and much more. BBspot was started by Brian Briggs in April of 2000 as a hobby to bring some fun to the web, but grew to the point where Brian "quit his day job" and made the site his full-time occupation in January of 2003.

Material from BBspot has been featured several times on Tech TV's The Screen Savers show, on The Discovery Channel, radio shows, major newspapers and books. BBspot has had five front page postings on Slashdot, and is very proud to be linked from the home page for Nethack. How's that for geek cred."

Interesting site nevertheless. Thanks for the link.

  6. I'm pretty much a non techie, so simple works very well for me.

Depending on whether she has her OS disks, to do a reinstall, rather than mirror the os onto a second drive, and depending on how much stuff she wants to backup, she might just be able to get away with a flash drive or two or three...I have seen sale packs of 3 (1 gig each) for about 30 to 40 dollars. Also with Xp she has system restore for minor glitches and hopefully her os disks for major ones.

I just back up essential stuff to my flash drives every month, alternating the flash drives so I always have a for sure backup in case one flash drive bites the dust. Every six months I backup stuff to cds. Ok so I don't trust technology...Ha! With bigger and bigger flash drives available now, backups are so simple to do and that helps me feel like doing it regularly. If I had specific good size folders to do, I'd dedicate a flash drive or two to just that and stick the drive in an envelope with a note about what's in it. Or use flash drives for daily backup to carry stuff offsite. Many ideas to choose from. Only thing to remember is the disconnect via clicking flash drive icon in taskbar to safely disconnect.

Oh by the way Symantec's backup software name has changed in past few months, in case you think about that one.

  7. Some of our pipes in this town are over a hundred years old. I'm sure our area's are close to that too, in fact we still have horse rings in the parking strip curbs to tie up the horses way back when.

I heard a city engineer on the news tonight saying it could happen anywhere in town. Said they send a camera probe through all the sewer pipes every five to ten years which does an adequate job to check for trouble. Hmmm... adequate is an interesting word...depending on how they define it.

Yes we have the freezing and thawing weather problem too!

Had a tiny sink hole start in our intersection a year or two back, hubby called the city right away when he noticed it. The city public works dept put up warning signs around it, which some dumb people moved to side of street and drove right over it in spite of this being a wide enough street to go around stuff. After wasting some time, waiting to see if it would worsen?, they finally they fixed it. In the meantime I was just thankful it was on the far side of the street from our place.

As for normal potholes, yeah our town has plenty of them...and a recent audit found out the city workers have been applying poor quality asphalt on all street paving and repair jobs for many years wasting precious tax dollars!!! Do I think that has changed any...sure folks...yeah right!!! Report probably in 'file thirteen' by now.

  8. Welcome back Nefrai, glad you remembered to come back.

I confess that I forget about going to some of my forums for weeks or months at a time, then on a slow night on my regular boards I finally remember I have other boards to check out. If they aren't doing much then I go lurk at some possible future boards just for fun.

Hope you find your way back here more often than in past.

This is still my favorite board to relax, destress, and to just have fun gabbing with board friends all over the world.

  9. I hope the workers get over their injuries soon.

I hope we don't have anymore sinkholes, if one can be big enough to take in a city truck with no warning, then our little Subaru Justy wouldn't have a chance but also it isn't as heavy. Sure glad the broken gas line didn't explode with impact of crash.

Had a broken water main in a busy street downtown last week (or was it week before?), now this.

  10. Hi Mike,

Yes I thought so too until this whole mess erupted but it turns out that the Pac10 conference is so cheap that not much is given to the replay booth official(s) to have available for review. (We live in a tech world, but they (Pac10) seem to be in the dark on how to advance with the times.) Of course the Pac10 people higher up all denied that he didn't have ample information and they even said there was NO Pressure on him...yeah right...all later refuted by others as bogus PR spin!!!

Ooops just reread your post, yes there was vindication by the records of what he had at time he made the call, that showed he made it based on the only video view he had. That was in at least one of the articles I linked to. and other reports too at the time. He had a gut feeling it was wrong call but had to call it by what he saw, on his only view which was a very limited one, according to the rules I guess.

Funny how no one but him was punished severely (others on field got a short suspension) and career ruined over a mistake.... it's not as if mistakes don't happen a zillion times in a sports season.... so what's the big deal!!!

Strange thing the world of sports...which brings me back to my original reason for posting this...of how many people have no idea what sportsmanship means nowadays including the fan(atic)s.

Number one thing to remember is don't seek revenge, or threaten lives of officials and their families over a bad call...for heavens sake folks it's only a game!!! I just can't figure out what kind of people would stoop to such an ugly level to make his life so miserable. And he seems like an honorable man who if given the full all angles video information he would have made the right call. Also because he is an honorable man, this thing is eating at him....along with worrying over the safety of himself and his family. He needs our prayers.

  11. This is so tragic JD,

Unfortunately as others have said, that piece of paper doesn't really help protect a person at all. In fact often makes the situation worse. And another thing that isn't commonly known, that restraining order doesn't cover alot of territory. Sometimes only the boundaries of the county it was written in, and if a larger region, it probably is only good in that state. Not even to nearby ones as I found out a long time ago the hard way!!! Those RO papers are not recognized across many jurisdictions and not across state lines either!!! False security for sure!!!

So sad that our society only pretends to care about abusive home situations...if we really cared, we would make more effort to give real help, especially protection, to those who are trying to escape a terrible situation.

As for how things are spiraling down the drain, take a look at the old thread I just brought up with additional information on original story. Nearly 3 months later a ordinary good man, a replay booth official for college football has been continually harrassed and his and his family's lives threatened over a bad call he made at a stupid football game. Unbelievable that such a thing could happen in a great country such as ours...yeah right...just look at how parents act so violently toward coaches, officials, and other parents, even against their kids, even down to the peewee league level of games, they are teaching their kids that same insane way to act as the way to behave by their terrible examples.

Sorry between the two threads, I am not even able to calm down enough to make much sense, other than to say our society is way out of kilter in so many ways it is impossible to make it make sense.

  12. You might notice that I am bringing up an old thread of mine. Yes it really is from Sept, but I thought it was important to add this additional column of John Canzano's about the terrible way people across the country have continued to react ad nauseum to a bad call by the instant replay official in one stupid game.

On this day that we celebrate the birth of Jesus, I wonder if many haven chosen other gods....such as football or other sports, or power, or politics, or money as their god?

I think this whole episode is a sad commentary on this country's values.

Please continue to pray for Mr Gordon Riese, who only made a football game replay call mistake, nothing worse!!! So sad this has happened to such a caring man. From what has happened to him over a bad call, I now know why sports fans are called fans... short for Fanatics... and should be listed on the Psycho Docs list as another form of mental illness for those who become so extremely fanatical over just a game.

82 day wait for reason to prevail

Oddly enough the first link is still good past 14 days and so is this one which was dated Dec 10th. Maybe the Oregonian columnists have a longer time online deal for their stories?

  13. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

Huby and I are hardly speaking... well now it's not what you thought either (though I admit we have been stressed out abit with all this new season of our lives stuff to figure out but haven't gotten mad enough to quit speaking!!!)...We just have a light case of a larnygitis(sp?) bug.... can't spell or type either...fuzzy headed too, or fuzzier than usual I should say. He's better than me, he got it first. So will do a nice ham dinner for him tomorrow, though I may just eat soup.

As for going down to NZ, that is one of things I have always wanted to do!!! How about it Liz? We just need to win the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes!!!

Marty, how have you been doing, and have the Drs figured out what is going on from your tests? I haven't been on the boards much this past week or so, just saw somewhere that you were having angina pains and tests. I sure hope and pray that you will recover completely from them. Modern medicine has come along ways to be able to help people with various heart problems since my Dad suffered many years ago with both Diabetes and heart problems.

    Merry Christmas folks.

Had a good laugh over how your post got mixed into mine there, Marty. HaHa!!

Glad you have a spray? for your angina? that helps. What is it a nitro spray, or? If Nitro, be sure to watch dates that it is good for, at least with the pills they used to with time become useless, but maybe improved now.

  14. Hugs to you too my friend and good night.

Hubby has been nagging me for an hour to quit and go to bed... "yeah honey just as soon as I catch up here"...then he growls, then I growl, then we laugh albeit a bit hoarsely!!! Serves us right too!!! Ha!!!

  15. Hello Shane welcome to the best forum around. We are a big (world wide) family, and we always like adding more to our happy go lucky group.

Hope you will like spending time with us.

I am one of the helpers here....yeah right!!! Actually I just help Liz run amuck, or she helps me, whichever works out at the time. Anyhow we all have fun, but you'll find we really do care about each other on this board too.

Merry Christmas from our house to yours.

  16. Count me in on the cranky side of life!!!

This scratchy throat/very little voice/headache bug is just bad enough that I don't want to do anything!!!

Procrastinated on doing my Christmas cards, so maaaaybe will sit down this week adn do them? Better late than never I guess....and you sure find out who only sends you a card because you sent them one when you wait this long to send any. Guess I can cut my list waaaay back!!! Good!!! Saves stamps that way!!! And I could wait until summer and then send out the late cards and count them for both this year and next??? Sounds like a plan to me!!!

Did go to a couple of malls a couple of weeks ago, ugh!!! I hate malls anyhow, and only went because I like to see the Christmas decorations...and one had such a poor excuse of displays that they should have had signs up apologizing for it. The other mall was better, and I loved watching the kids sitting on Santa's lap to have pictures taken. Funny how society tells kids don't be over friendly with strangers, don't let strangers touch or hug you and of course that would include not sitting on his lap! And never take candy from strangers (except at Halloween). So Grandma wants a picture of Suzy and Timmy, so put them in special Christmas clothes, take them to the mall, stand in line for Santa, then tell them to sit on Santa's lap, let him hold you tight, and smile for camera, oh don't forget to take the candy cane he hands you either. So is it any wonder the kids cry and scream and fight? What a world of contradictions we live in But it is funny to watch them play it all out for a crummy overpriced picture. I love to watch to see if the kids will actually sit still nicely and smile for the camera, or not, and to see how much patience any of the key players have if a kid objects wholeheartedly to the whole thing.

We aren't buying presents this year due to hubby's layoff. Now repairs are another subject. Seems like there is always something falling apart around here. Ended up at Lowes the other day, fairly new store in our neck of the woods, so friendly and helpful when they first opened. How things change!!! And it appears that the customers voted them out for the change in attitude which we have noticed the last few trips there. We only saw two other customers that day, and one of them was mad as a hornet for their misinformation the previous trip that an item he ordered would be in on the date they said and had just found out not until sometime in Jan. He yelled over his shoulder as he left..."cancel the order!!! I'll go over to Home Depot or Sears". So we found what we wanted, then hiked up to the line of cash registers...only one with a clerk actually ringing things up but several do-it-yourself chekcout lanes with clerks standing at each to supervise the no customers. One customer was ahead of us with a scad of stuff, but would one of the non busy clerks open another register...no way! And no one said a word to us (and didn't hear them say anything ot person ahead of us either). Just took our card and bagged stuff and we left. Good heavens, even Sears, who is known for uncaring help, is friendlier than that. Seemed so rude of them to not even answer us wishing them a Merry Christmas. Oh well their loss.

From one cranky person to another, Merry Christmas folks.
