  1. Welcome, Lisa!! Any friend of Marty's is a friend of mine! He's a great guy, isn't he?

Jump in, run amuck, make a mess and let us get to know you better! Glad you're here and if you have any questions, feel free to ask them!

Another lady in the ranks.....watch out, fellas! :) (Once when Chappy, an admin here went out of town, he singled out Pat, Barb, Darlene and me to behave ourselves....none of the men....no idea why! ;))

    Liz

Welcome to our favorite boards Ice Wolf. Glad you are here to help us gals even things up with the guys! Yes as Liz said, I am part of the group that has been known to run amuck around here stirring things up, shaking the place up etc, just having a good time with the best family around. I am betting that Marty told you we are a great big family...yep it's true. A bit dysfunctional at times, but a true family. And we are always pleased to welcome new members into our slapstick way of life on board.

Glad to see that Mac has been taking care of Honey Bun for me, I've been missing in action quite a bit lately...so will have to stop by the cafe soon and see if Honey Bun even remembers me though I might not get to friendly a welcome at first but still have some doggy treats to soothe the sweetie pie. By the way do watch out for the aligators that Liz has in protective hibernation for the winter (summer time they are likely to be in the pool...though maybe she just raised the pool temperature so they could stay comfortable all winter long?)

Oh Ice Wolf please disregard my grouchy posts elsewhere on BT today about new upgraded board features...I don't like things that worked so well already to change...but somehow I'll get used to it I hope!!! I'm not usually so grumpy though am often very opinionated...ok folks stop laughing and agreeing so fast with that statement.

  2. yes he ahs had an operation

    and i dont think

    he fared to well

    ive pmed him coupla times

but he said after the operation

he couldnt sit for long at the compt

and not seeing a post from him

    im worried

    marty.

    I'm back for a while.

On 11/13/06, I had a blotched operation for PROSTATE CANCER.

Doctor was unable to open me up because of the adhesions, from an Kidney operation in 1984.

The current plan is to have RADIATION SEEDS IMPLANTED into it.

This will take place in either March or April.

Been without a computer from 12/19/06 till 1/9/07.

    Enough of my problems!!!!

I am so sorry to hear it is such a serious problem handplane.

Just found the updated part of this thread after supper tonight to see you had mentioned what was going on, had only seen Marty's posting about it last time I was here.

I was already praying for you based on Marty's info, will continue to do so.

God bless you and heal you my friend.

  3. Just discovered something new about PM's.

When you are added to a member's Friend List, you are notified by an email.

When you go to Besttechie to read it, there is none to be read.

At least this is my experience.

Has anyone else have this problem??

That's not a problem, that email is just a notification that someone added you as a friend, nothing more.

    B

Now that email thing is really irritating!!! Thanks handplane for confirming that's what happened. So I just checked my seldom used email and yep there were several added friend emails there too, making a big deal out of such a simple board function thing. Seems like SPAM to me!!!

Is there an option to not have such useless stuff sent to our email? It's bad enough to have it clogging up our profile page....so high school!!! Did I mention it seems like SPAM????

Alot of this new stuff seems so high school, if even that... as in totally boring!!!

A new, bad in my opinion, feature I just found out tonight the hard way is that those of us on dialup who used to be able to keep a page or two or three of 'view new posts' up while offline taking a break to have supper or when cutoff by our dialup service due to bypassing their max time for a session could come back later and redialup and still be logged in!!!. Well I sent handplane a PM earlier, put up 3 windows of pages of 'view new posts' that I hadn't caught up on yet, stopped my dialup internet service for awhile, had supper and came back online and found out I was logged off BT and only a guest. Luckily I could still view any and all the threads on those pages without losing the pages/threads, but had to do it the long way via from the beginning of thread or whatever guessed page I chose to read. Didn't dare log in again until I read the threads that were of interest for fear I would lose them totally and have to go the real long route via each section of the forum for past 10 or 12 days. The old way wasn't hurting the BT server I don't think since I wasn't online via my dialup, it was just a way to make life easier for those of us on dialup and was such a convenient nice feature. I sure will miss it. Though hope it can be restored??? Please Jeff?

I think this new upgrade is not as great as it is cracked up to be, in my opinion. Sorry about that.

Slow to load all the bloated stuff on dialup, dropped good features, added dubious value new ones...oh my...!!! What part of if it isn't broke don't fix or over-improve it don't designers understand nowadays?

Sorry but that is how I feel about it. Yep I'm back to grouchy again.

  4. You are very welcome Liz, glad I could help you find the McAfee forums.

Sorry for late reply, seems like we are so busy plus sharing computer and trying to stay within the time alloted by dialup service here...one of these days I'm going to switch outfits!!!

Anyhow just bumping this up to see how it went with your upgrading to the new McAfee?

I hope it worked out ok for you.

    Stay safe my friend.

    Pat

    God bless everyone

  5. Thanks Jeff,

    Sorry I'm such a grouch...again...!!!

Just didn't expect to have that particular problem.

Did some experimenting, after I had another cup of coffee, to see if I could find an easy way to add the people back into my friends list. Found out I can click on their name on the block page to bring up their profile and then below their avatar/egghead/MrPotatoHead picture there is an add to friends list thingy to click on. So got nearly everyone back on friends list except a couple that seem to be but they didn't show up when I went to next person. Maybe I should have waited until page fully loaded instead of jumping to add them??? Patience is not my middle name that's for sure, nor following instructions!?! Anyhow will check later before I delete all those on block list.

    Luv ya'all

  6. Hello Marty,

    Thanks for the warning!!!

No wonder my F-Secure suite has been doing so many updates this week.

Here is a good link to see what the new threats are from the F-Secure Security people's lab news site.

F-Secure Security folks lab news site

The best way to avoid this sounds like the usual stuff, don't open attachments as Leo Laporte on Call For Help always said. After all you can always go to legitamite news sources, or do a search for that specific info on Ask or Google etc if you really must learn more about the subject.

Stay safe folks, use common sense to protect yourself.

    God bless everyone

  7. I did a test run of the fixes for this, must not have done it right, or I am just more than a little confused??? Have only been onboard for a few minutes and don't like being confused and unhappy with my favorite board instead of my usual peaceful happy feeling of being over here.

Sent Liz a PM (with copy below to save time and effort on my part) to test things out but my block/allow list is a bigger mess if it is same list just exchanged blocked to messages allowed on it.!!! I am to nearsighted to easily see what is going on and not a very happy camper at this point, though when I was here about 10 days ago, I couldn't even find new messages at top right to do PMs as usual, so I guess things have improved since then. Sigh!!!

Copy of my PM to Liz, just in case she doesn't get it and since it pertains to this problem.

    "Hello Liz,

I haven't had a chance to come back over here for about 10 days, so am still at a loss about some of the new stuff Jeff put in.

I saw your thread about friends blocked instead of allowed, checked out my list and all were blocked, tried to unblock you and Jeff to start with, but it only allowed the rest of my list not you two. So I figured I could delete the two and start over but it wont allow me to add you two again. Sigh. Says it is the block list but says messages allowed? What's with that?

The boards were nice, fast, and efficient before, so why did whoever owns the software for the board system feel like adding all the bloated stuff to slow things way down (especially slow for me on dialup I noticed last time I was here) and make other things go haywire...?

New and improved seldom is in my opinion. Oh well.

Sigh....to bad it is my favorite board, and that I just don't have the patience or time to monkey around trying to figure out how to fix the broken stuff, etc.

I will copy/paste this to your thread along with trying to send it as a PM to test it and will try tracking it too.

    Love ya!

    Pat

    God bless."

  8. I love your idea Mike!!!

I am semi left handed depending on task, so have the mouse set up on left of keyboard, (but I'm not lefty enough to switch the settings in Windows 2000 to completely reverse the right/left click thing). And the scroll wheel on my mouse only works on some websites scroll bar...hence needing to crisscross the screen all the time...grrrr!!!

Why oh why didn't Microsoft itself give us the option of having scroll bar (for some insane reason when I started learning this computer a few years ago I called it the elevator instead of scroll bar and often still do too) on left side of IE window????

Thanks for bringing the subject up Mike.

  9. Hi Liz,

As others have said, disconnect from internet while switching.

Also do uninstall old before new one of most everything.

And the McAfee forums are still around, though may not be anymore help than their previous anemic responces from McAfee support was.

My first few tries to them did not work on my favorites link, but last one did so keep trying.

    McAfee forums

I have heard that if you have had a suite, even if as I remember you saying once that you only used part of it, that you should always stay with the suite unless you totally completely uninstall it.

Upgrades to a suite supposedly were ok I have heard but not downgrades. Who knows...I just have read that. Unfortunately both Norton like I used to have, and McAfee have terrible reputations for uninstalling/installing their stuff.

I am sitting with two full years of McAfee suites in drawer (unused) due to my corrupted by Norton computer which wont co-operate with McAfee. I got both free..the latest (total protection) in case I did a reinstall...then I read it is the worst of all to install....so will probably just go get another F-Secure suite to have on hand for when old one expires. (Also have a 2006 Norton suite that computer wouldn't let me install!!!!) Sure a good thing they were all free with rebates!!! Still it is annoying!!! Grrrr!!!

Good luck with your coming session to do the security changeover.

  10. That is an very unusual looking still Marty. Had a good laugh over it. And loved the musical element....though a redneck would have probably used galvanized washtubs instead.

I asked hubby if I should send it to our city water bureau to suggest they consider it as another alternative to their program to have us disconnect downspouts from city sewer or storm drains. At the moment all they want us to do is dig a dry well and reroute the downspout to that. But hubby doesn't think the city would have a sense of humor regarding this.. yeah he is probably right on that!!!

But since this town is rapidly becoming famous for microbreweries (and green roofs and other liberal greenie stuff..oooops!!!), perhaps it needs to add this idea to the list??? HaHa!!!

  11. U.S. News magazine had an interesting balanced article on MySpace et al a few months ago. The main article plus the related ones via the links, might give some perspective on the issue with enough information for both youngsters and parents to have a good talk about the family rules concerning it's use.

  12. I'm glad it turned out to be an nice adventure for you and that you made some new friends Honda Boy.

I'm also glad you named the thread as you did, and added some of the same thinking into the thread. Just because it turned out ok this time, and please do still be on the watch each time you meet up with them or anyone else, it doesn't mean it couldn't have been a total disaster of the worst kind being as how the world is nowadays. Be sure to always carry what we gals used to call "mad money" to be used to get away from a situation that gets ugly or uncomfortable.

We have had several kids just disappear off the face of the earth for months if not forever here in this area in recent years, some went willingly (one teenager landed down in your part of the country with her teacher and found via a car accident there where she confessed who she was, some were kidnapped and some of their bodies were recovered, some have never been found...yes both boys and girls of all ages.

So meeting new people is a risky business with any by-chance meetings without introduction from people who know both parties, whether at school, the mall, or the internet. Having said all that, it is the way things are now adays...hopefully it will always work out ok for anyone risking that type of meeting.

    Ok 'mother-hen' signing off now.

  13. So ok this is what happens when I take off for a few days to many times, and come back this time only to find that Jeff moved the furniture around while I was gone...Hmmm!!!

Now I don't need to have a seeing eye dog yet... so should get the hang of things soon...

Well so far so good if this posts ok... I hope!!!

  14. hi hi test

    good to see you back

    for some reason train travel

is very popular in nz and ozzy

we have a interisland train that travels from one end of the country to the other

as nz is mad eof two ialands

it is devided by a strait strip of water

and it has a ferry that runs between the islands

but the passengers do not have to get off the train

    the train enters the ferry

\at one end and drives off at the other destination

and carrys on until it reaches the northen part of nz

    then it returns vica versa

    many tourist use it

ive trvaeled on it my self drink amd food are served

on it so it is like a home away from home

    it has dining cars

    and sleeping cars

luckly they are short spurt journeys

    not big like the usa

    marty

    Hi Marty,

Thanks for the welcome back:-) We enjoyed the trip so much we're going to go on a longer trek this summer into the interior. The trip to the center of our province is a one day train trip, a distance of 725 km, or about 450 miles. That should be fun! :D

Well here is my second try at writing this post, lost the first one into that great black hole of internet space. I wonder if the bits and pieces just float around and careen into each other like so much cosmic dust? And what if some alien beings in a galaxy or two far far away are trying to find out more about us, only they just run into all this flotsam and jetsom of internet lost bits of space debris...what a terrible first impression it would make!!!

As I was saying... I read both Marty's and hitest's posts to my hubby and he said he'd love to sightsee by train travel around the USA as he had a taste of it during the service. I added let's do Canada too, and of course just to be funny said if we win the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes maybe we can even add in the NZ trip too.

So ok it is New Years week with a pile of sweepstakes entries on my desk to fill out and send in, oh dreamer that I am.

Anyhow Marty's description of the NZ train/ferry combines two of my favorite modes of travel...trains and ferrys. (There are caravan trips to Mexico that combine train travel with my other favorite.. Motorhome travel... by piggybacking the motorhome onto flatbed trains for trips to special hard to get to places that only have train access as I understand it)

Of course I would want to redo some of my old favorite ferry trips in Puget Sound section of Washington state, and also ones through the San Juan Islands to Vancouver Island British Columbia, and hopefully add the ferry trip up to Alaska.

Yeah I'd better win the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes (Marty I'd better tell you what Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes is...it is a 10 million dollar grand prize to anyone who enters with the winning numbered certificate, but their real business is to sell you magazines subscriptions but I will give them credit they do have really good rates on most new subscriptions and I do order magazines once in awhile from them but enter alot of their contests...which is a national thing to say in order to do something really expensive 'when/if I win Publishers Clearing House' as nearly everyone knows instantly what is meant) to do all that, and more of what we'd like to do in this new season of our lives.

Gee whiz I think my first (lost)post was easier to understand than this convoluted one. Sorry about that, I went back to clarify this and it got worse so will quit while we are all ahead...Ha!!!

  15. I don't sign my credit card on the back and have no problems whatsoever presenting my driver licence for signature verification when asked. (I know that this is not an answer to your question...but, I just wanted to throw that out..) If the card gets stolen and I am not aware of it, it will be a little harder for someone to use it. (I hope!)

I think that is false hope to think it will be harder for someone else to use an unsigned card.

You are much safer with a signed card according to the credit card companies. Then if someone signs for something and it doesn't match your signature they can be caught for fraud.

Without a signature the card is up for grabs, that is one of the reasons it is so dangerous to have a new one come to your home mail box in case someone removes it from mailbox before you do and authorizes it. Yes the phone authorization is supposed to only work by your phone number, but there are ways to bypass it I've heard, along with the obvious one to break into house or use open window/door while you are gone and then use phone. Then all they do is sign the card and use it.

But if you sign your card, maybe you'll get lucky enough that a clerk would spot a different signature for purchase than on card and take card away or call cops/security etc.

Of course that doesn't protect you from them using card number to order things over the phone or internet, but it is one step better than not doing all that is possible to protect it.

Just heard on the local news tonight of current scams of people using stolen card numbers or copied credit cards to do very small purchases each month thinking people wont check out their statements or argue over small amounts, so it goes on for months before increasing it step by step which serves to keep it out of the automated safety watch features of credit card companies for unusual activity. I've heard of it happening like that on corporate cards before but now it seems they are doing it on personal ones too. I didn't get the full story, was busy with supper, but did hear the general warning to watch your statements and challenge all wrong charges no matter the size. Duh!!! Though I can see with people being so busy nowadays of how a person might have a general idea of how much the bill should be and if it is within a few dollars they might just think they had forgotten something, so pay it anyhow. Keep all your receipts and double check against statements always. And of course check your bank statements and balance check books too since so much is done nowadays with debit cards that could be stolen and misused same as credit cards.

P.S. As long as I am doing warnings, here is one I have mentioned before....Know when your statements are due to arrive each month, not only to get them out of mail box before someone else does who is after the credit card number printed on them, but if the statement is late arriving call credit card company as soon as possible to see why it is late. That is how my hubby discovered our number had been stolen and they had new cards made up using our passwords/credit card number/backup info etc to do it and said send to 'our' new address in California. The company never called to double check it with us. The card was sent to the crooks, and they were ATMing it at $500 a day. So by notifying the credit card company as soon as bill was late arriving here by a few days, we were able to stop it before it got really used heavily. Credit Card Security said it probably was an inside job of someone selling all our security info for the crooks to have when they called. (We burned everything that had important numbers etc at the time to protect ourselves, now it is safely shredded....a friend shreds hers and then uses shreddings as cat littler...she says she dares anyone to go through it afterwards to piece it back together...HA!!!)

Stay safe folks both online and off.

  16. LCD monitor or CRT?

If CRT, I have heard they need to be shut off and turned back on periodically to degaus(?) them.

Whichever one you have, have you tried shutting it off and leaving it off for awhile then turning it back on?

Does the on light, if it has one, show up on keyboard too?

Maybe bad cable or bad/loose connection?

    Pat

    God bless everyone

  17. Just a back to basics question here but you do have the monitor turned on, and plugged into a known good working plug, right? And if so does the monitor's indicator light show it is on?

I hope you get it solved so it works right for you.

    Pat

  18. Only need to add one thing to Liz's great post, always ask for the confirmation security code on back of the credit card to verify it.

I didn't know my Visa card even had one until today when I called in an order to Swanson's Vitamins, and the nice lady who took my order asked for the last three digits of that security number near my signature to verify I had the actual card she said. Anyhow she said it is just another security thing to help them and customer stay safe. Funny I never noticed it before... that I remember anyhow.... or it could just be due to my CRS 'selective memory'!!!

As for liability for the merchant, one of those areas might be if the customer was unhappy with the product or service and you didn't make it right for him/her then they can do a charge back to the credit card company by calling the card company...with the card company doing an investigation to figure out who is at fault. We have used that a couple of times many years ago when things just weren't satisfactorily(sp?) solved but I can't remember now what it was all about, just that that was our only recourse left to us at the time and the investigation proved us out.

With so many bad cards out there, as a small business I would think it is a big risk to take credit cards or checks too for that matter but who knows except other people in your area. You might be able to talk to other small business owners in same field as you and see how much their losses are over a year due to bad cards and see if it is a low enough risk to do it.

Good luck to you in your business.

    Pat

    God bless everyone
