  1. Whenever I go to the bottom of this page. I see GoogleBot, what is that ? Thanks.

Hey shadow, thanks for asking. I've wanted to know that also.

For the life of me I couldn't figure out what it was.

I should have googled it. Haha

  2. My Hotmail is still only 2MB.

Netscape changed recently to 250MB, however they are having log in problems. Maybe that is why they gave me 250, I can't log in to use them. Haha

Welcome flashh4. This is a great board. You will meet some of the finest people here, that are more than willing to help, with a wealth of knowledge.

I might add it can be a lot of fun also. We all get along like one big happy family. A lot of us are from the old TechTV, which is now G4, and I also do not participate too much at G4. Only drop in once in awhile. Mostly come here, Worldstart and Dell.

Thanks to "B" for creating this board so we could all gather and stay together. Hope you enjoy your stay here.

  4. Hi all,

I just updated S&D and ran a scan.

    It found the following error:

    Error during check!

Cabrotor [Datei C:Windows\win.ini kann nicht geoffnet werden.  The pro...

What in the world is this?  I tried uninstalling and reinstall, but I get the same above message.

Does anyone know how to get rid of this.  I'm concerned that the scanning will not be accurate.

    Thanks .

I got the same message, and was wondering what the heck is this. I just deleted it and hoped for the best. I felt pretty confident that I was not infected with anything, as Norton scanned and came up with nothing.

Glad to hear it is fixed, Thanks for letting us know.

  5. Rather than rewrite what I posted in other board, I will just copy and paste it.

Sorry for the duplication folks, but I got to thinking that this is also a security alert as the various updates this week have turned off both my antivirus and firewall protection along with other things, with different days updates. So I want to warn everyone with Norton to be careful and check out the display window to make sure you are fully protected. It doesn't show up on the system tray icons most of the time.

I checked out the update sticky thread over on G4's Tech Support board and found a useful warning/alert from Pete about how some of the updates for Norton are not coming through on autoupdate. So do as he did and check out the live update once in awhile to get the rest of the updates.

Personally lately I don't trust my Norton 2004 antivirus and firewall even when I can see what they are doing to me. I have had several times in past week or so where the update shut off certain things after it installed. Multiple reboots fixes it most of the time, though once it reguired going back online for the final fix that day (I am on dialup) exposed to trouble, when the recent Oct 19th updates shut off intrusion detection. I found another update that fixed it. Only after reboot did it show no round green globe, so I started looking for why. And it refused to let me turn it back on, until I got the rest of the update online, though I did get the other things turned back on that day with several reboots.

My other troubles with it shutting things off after other updates, untill I do Several Reboots, ONLY SHOW up in the Norton display window thingy. NO Change in system tray icon status. So now after every update, and every time I get on the computer, I open that Norton display window, where you click on the liveupdates thing, to see that everything is checked as on!!!! Otherwise I don't trust it to protect me. I am so unhappy with this 2004 version.

I only hope it is not doing the same thing to others on auto update with the no show of trouble in tray icons but there is major trouble elsewhere as seen in the turned off items in display screen. And no I do not appear to have any worm/virus/trojan trouble after scan checks. It is the update thing doing this recently.

So that is my warning, and now here is Pete's.

I just encountered another of Nortons hidden updates

I have automatic live updates and have been getting them as expected. Just ran live update manually and found 4.8MB of hidden updates, including a new WMI for SP2, new symantec redirector, and new common client. Seems to fix the slow boot the norton firewall was causing." endquote.

Be careful folks that your Norton is working correctly. Stay safe.

    God bless everyone. endquote.

Be careful and don't even trust your own antivirus and firewall without double checking it.

    God bless everyone.

I also found my intrusion detection off, when I went to check liveupdate manually, and it would not let me turn it back on. I had NIS 2003, and was ready for renewal soon, so went and got NIS 2005.

The only problem I had with it is, it has a pop up blocker. When you go to some sites, you have to turn it off while at that site and everything works ok. You of course have the option to turn it off completely. I have only had it for 2 days, so can not give a complete review of it, but so far ok.

The NIS 2003 took about 140MB, and NIS 2005 only takes up 33.27MB.

It also has an anti-spam feature, which I may turn off completely. It reads your address book, and you will get your email from anyone in it. If they are not in your address book, it may get labeled spam, and you will not get it. I did have that happen to me, and have not found a way to retrieve it. It is a place I buy computer supplies from. How I found out what happened is I opened the anti-virus window, reports, view activity log, click email filter. A list of your email comes up, I recognized which one I did not get, highlighted and changed it from spam to clean.

This is as much as I know about it right now.

Thanks sidekickcat for info, I thought I was the only one, Glad to know it was Norton.

  6. If you guys have been over to Tech Support at G4, you probably know this already but...seems that some trolls are trying to gather up troops to get Pete kicked off as moderator.  There's a petition to sign to show Pete your support if you're interested.

That just might be the last straw for me as far as G4 is concerned.  I'm just not interested in the direction TSS (the show) has taken and I'm almost afraid to ask a question over at the forums for fear of having someone call be a dumb something or another.

Thankfully, this is such a good site here and everyone is so nice and helpful.  That's a BIG thank you to all of ya!

I was just over there and saw the petition for Pete, and of course voiced my opinion and signed also.

I can't imagine anyone in their right mind wanting to get rid of Pete. He has done so much for a lot of people, including myself, devoting a lot of FREE time.

I hope G4 reconsiders and keeps Pete, and than Pete can leave on his own terms.

Since B opened up this board, I hardly ever go over there anymore. This is more friendly here. This has the family feeling TTV had, and I'm glad B opened this.

I use to get TTV newsletter, and just continued with G4, until I read a few of them. I then unsubscribed. Don't watch TSS or any G4 programming.
