Gateway Select 1200, has a quatumfireball ICT 20 20 hd, thinking of putting in a larger one, but dont know what to get, I mean in the way of sata idi, etc. Hardware profile doesnt give me any indication. gonna use the old as a slave and new as a master. Thanks for any help, Jim.

SOME IDIOT ( ) forgot to save it. All seems to work fine now. Also got my broadband hooked up, ordered a Linksys WRT54GS router from newegg (ordered on the 6th, got here today) took me know more than 10 min to hook up, and the laptop is wireless and daughter is happy.

Tried Panda twice, on both tries Avast showed a virus (forgot the name) downloading with it. Kept downloading and it never would scan. Tried TrendMicro housecall, it just never would scan.

Thanks for all the replys, been busy today and first time been able to read posts. Ok, already signed up, gonna install next week, gonna buy a modem from Charter (no rent), asked about getting router from them, lady suggested (very subtly) that I get one from best buy, etc, thiers was pretty costly. So to keep wires from trailing every where, Im looking at what, a router, and 2 adapters for the 2 desktops (the laptop already has wirless)? Or as one suggested, go wired and save some dough. Ok, finally after having dialup for years, springing for Charter broadband. Newb questions, so here goes. Have 3 computers, all with xp home, an older gateway select 1200, an HP Pavilion, and a Toshiba laptop. Will have the broadband modem at the HP(Im guessing this is the way it works). The laptop came with a Atheros AR5005G wireless network adapter. What do I need in the way of a router, adapter/adapters for the others? (now the part you always hear) dont want to spend a fortune for this stuff, but dont want junk either, so any recomendations are appreciated.

Currently have ME as os, and have quite a few programs not compatable with XP, but have XP upgrade disc. Can I use the advanced option on the disc to install XP as a second os and will it or does it have the ability to format the hd or do I have to go back and reformat ME and redo everything? Noob question I know, but thanks in advance for your help.

Im pretty sure i need a new modem, my old one will not connect, its a BCM V90 or whatever, original one that came with a Gateway Select 1200 with 1.2 g and amd athlon. Looking on Newegg.com will one of the cheaper dialup modems be alright? loaded question I know, but reviews for the cheaper ones and the more expensive ones, even though there is not more than 20 bucks difference, are not much different. besides I cant see spending much on an older box. I wish that had worked, as a matter of fact it shows up on the blue screen along with the HP logo as f10 recovery something something, but if you hit the key it will either just reboot back to the blue log on screen or disc read error, or nothing. This if the first night Ive had to mess with it in a few days, will see what I can do. Dont know wether It got hit with a virus, spyware, hd went bad or what. Its only about 3or 4 months old, maybe walmart will take it back, lol.

Daughters computer HP Pavilion a735w AMD Athlon XP 3000 512 ram 80hd, startup screen comes up, then freezes, only error I get is one time I got a missing dll, didnt write it down, now disc read error, cant get into safe mode or back into last good configuration mode by hitting f8. If I do get to safe mode command it then freezes, wont do anything else. any help appreciated. Cant find backup or boot disc, I do have a Xp upgrade disc I wanted to use on this computer but it didnt work out.

I have 2 computers, a newer one with xp and an older gateway with Me, just reinstalled me, had to take xp off of it, it just never worked well on it. and if I download all the microsoft updates to it, it starts to slowdown, crash, bluescreen, all the fun stuff. so I reinstalled me, forgot the updates, make sure AVG and Zonealarm is updated, and it works like a charm, no crashes or anything. Firefox slows it down too. I wish it werent the case, but it does. So I plug along with IE. I run fdisc once before and it did not show any partitions, When I run the reinstall program, when it gets to the error, it does not show any keyboard commands either. Im at a loss.

In trying to reinstall ME on a gateway 1200 1.2 128ram, I am wanting to completely wipe away all files, the disc starts then it comes up Drive O is in a corrupt state due to a previous incomplete install, Imagecast client has to wipe away the partition. Well then it will not seem to go any further. it wants me to select the partition to wipe, but the cursor is not there to hit the wipe button, and again, nothing seems to happen. Am I not waiting long enough, will it start up if I leave it alone? These are the 3 disc that came with the computer to reinstall windows. Thanks, Jim.

Thanks for the input, tried system restore, didnt make any difference. Had been using Adaware, but downloaded SpybotS&D, got 2 hits off of fastclick, then downloaded CWS and run that, got 2 hits, one of them a bad dll, wish now I had wrote them down. Google is now working, Yahoo still wont, but at least part of the problem is solved. Thanks for having me. Jim

Just used the disc cleanup utilitly that comes with xp. had all the boxes checked, I turned the power off last night and for once this morning google came back on, now it wont, google news will, but still no yahoo search, google, gmail,. I use yahoo as my homepage, if that makes any difference, but even if you try from msn, google is gone. thanks

well, I did a disc clean up, (by the way have xp home) now on yahoo, it will search, but wont load the searched pages, and google wont load at all, even gmail wont load, In firefox or IE.
