  1. does anyone know where can I find video tutorials for upgrading ram memory in the thinkpad r40?
  2. Can I upgrade the RAM memory on the R40 using RAM memory from the A31?
  3. If you mean the product key sticker at the back of the laptop, then yes the A31 has one, although I haven't compared it with the license key Berlac Advisor gives. Edit: They are not the same
  4. I bump this thread for an update, yesterday in the afternoon my mother gave me the old hard drive for this laptop which she no longer uses, it's an old 40 GB hard drive, I proceeded to install it back into its system and now I have the A31 thinkpad laptop running, I tried out the DVD drive that was me giving issues before and it seems to be working fine now. Therefore, I have 2 systems now: an R40 Thinkpad and an A31 Thinkpad, because of this, I would like to use only one and leave the other laptop for an emergency (in case something goes wrong with the first), I'm inclined on using th R40 as
  5. oh man, this is making me think that I should get one of these instead: http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Item(1922)..._2GB_Black.aspx one of my friends has it, and it comes with U3 as well, and between the programs installed in the drive I saw Avast Antivirus, when the program comes installed in U3, does that mean that all the updates will be installed in the USB drive itself or on the host computer? and what about the programs in U3, does the same procedure apply to them as well?
  6. ok guys, but, how long can I leave it running like that? 2 hours? 3 hours? can I leave it more? does that mean I don't need a cooling base? sorry about the insistence, I just want to know the limits because sometimes when doing research I lose track of time.
  7. how about other programs such as avast antivirus? or is there a way to scan a file running an antivirus straight from your USB drive? or is such program not a good option because it could increase its size due to updates?
  8. what is the best defragmentation program out there? does anybody know of any good one?
  9. ok according to speedfan I have: HDO: 41C Temp1: 26C this after about 30 minutes of having the laptop on EDIT: If I have word opened at the same time as surfing the web the temperature increases from HDO:41C to HDO:43C
  10. I have a small USB flash drive, it's this one: http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Pr...e=nsa&nsa=1 what is the best way to install programs (like firefox) in it to carry around, so that I can actually launch them from it without relying on the host computer (computer lab, library, coffee shop) at all?
  11. I actually thought of doing that at the beginning as well, but later on decided not to, because I'm used to add flowcharts or group my notes using diagrams to relate one idea to the other, I suppose that you can do the same using software, but when I'm doing it on the fly like in class it really doesn't give you much time, this is why I thought of either scanning my notes or using OCR, so I can have them all together, and use them as reference when I go on into more advance courses and I need to quickly freshen up on the basic stuff.
  12. really? I don't see it in the post in this link! http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/suites/FX101674121033.aspx
  13. I'm not such a power user of Microsoft Office so perhaps I overlooked it, which one of the programs in the office suite are you referring to? I don't remember word, excel or powerpoint to have this option, or am I missing something?
  14. My Thinkpad-R40 -2681 laptop runs kind of hot after about 15 minutes of use, since I will be using it for college I'd like to take good care of it, I've seen one of my friends use some sort of cooling base for her laptop, and I'd like to know what brand would you recommend, also I'm curious as to know what is the safe limit amount of time a laptop can run without a cooler base. The second product I'd like some recommendations is OCR. I usually have to read a lot, and therefore I take a lot of notes, I want to keep them on my computer, and I was thinking of having my note pages from my noteboo
  15. We just tried the Norton removal utility, we downloaded it, run the file and the message for "succesfully uninstalled" showed up, but the option in start >> all programs is still there, and when we click on it we still get the "Welcome to the Norton Antivirus 2003 installation wizard", guess we'll try the McAfee option then, is the McAfee removal tool the same kind of file? Those are just installers for free trial versions (usually a sixty day trial) which are normally bundled on many computers. It is not installed yet so there is nothing to uninstall. Just right click and choose prope

  17. Something odd, my friend has an option for norton antivirus in her list of Start >> All programs, we checked it out and when you click on it the wizard for installing the program shows up, well she doesn't want it after finding some free options such as Avast or AVG, and she never used/activated it before, so we proceeded to uninstall it, but the thing is, the program doesn't show up in Control Panel >> Add/Remove programs, not even under other name like Symantec or the such, we tried downloading revo uninstaller, but the program doesn't detect it either. How can we get rid of it?
  18. I didn't know Berlac Adviser could do that, that would be great!, can it recover a key from other programs too?, because I'm afraid the same sad story was repeated with her copy of Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003, this one and her OS are the reasons of why she doesn't want to do a fresh install.
  19. One of my friends at school has a system that is about a year old. It takes some time to load when starting up, and sometimes it runs a bit slow, I suggested for her to do a fresh install of Windows XP , but she refuses because although she has the CD, she lost the original envelope, you know, the one where the activation key is, now she wants to know if she can optimize her system without formatting and doing a fresh install, but instead using software like a defragmentation program, something to uninstall any traces from old programs that have been removed (like revo uninstaller for instan
  20. What does the internal battery looks like?, and where can I get it? when I tried Thinkpad A31 on ebay this is what I got: http://search.ebay.com/thinkpad-A31-batter...ksid=p1638.m120
  21. I just tried something, I went and disabled the options in the boot device list for all the components except the optical drive and the hard drive, since there's no hard drive I tried booting up the laptop with a GParted disk just to see if it works (there's no hard drive so GParted won't do a thing), it loaded and booted up, I tried a Ubuntu live CD after that, but I didn't have the same luck, I ended up with error messages: Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block [insert different number here]
  22. It was the battery that she used for the system, it is not a new one, and about the video you posted I guess they are taking out the internal battery right?, because the battery I took out is not the one in the vid, it's the battery you use to power up the laptop when you want to work on the road, I'm explaining it like this because I'm not quite sure which the internal CMOS or external power battery are. Ahh. That clears up the confusion. The CMOS battery (about the size of a penny) is attatched to the motherboard. It's job is to keep power to the BIOS when the laptop is off. Do you have exp

  24. The laptop is a Thinkpad A31, Windows XP Service Pack 2 was installed on it previously, so I was told. It's lacking the hard drive and the caddy for it, and it still has its battery, so I placed it
