  1. I a have a small recording studio made up of a Behringer 48 channel (a/B) board with a Alesis HD24 connected to my Mac with a MOTU 2408 where I use ardour to do mix down and add effects. I have used Cakewake and cuebase but once I stated using ardour they did not seam to be worth the price or limitations that the version have that come with hardware. for windows I would use ntrack pro as its is simple to get started and make work.. but I don't work in windows after some bad crashes in the middle of recording.

If I was to buy any DAW software I would probably buy either Logic Pro, or change out and go all Pro Tools, but that is costly...

your right on the condenser I should have stated better as the two comments were unrelated, as I was interrupted while writing and came back to my post latter on. I had thought of recommending a Shure SM57 or 58 (the beta's work as well) but then as I started looking for parts I come up with the list I posted.

the ART tube pre-amp is one of the best I have used, and for the price its a steal. it can be used as a pre, phantom power or as a direct box with connector conversion (XLR to 1/4 inch or vice versa) plus a ground inversion switch but no ground lift, probably safer with the phantom power.

while there is cheaper than the MOTU, but I find that they make some of the best gear and if you ever want to expand the motu will never let you down or make you wish you bought something else.. so I have problems recommending other boxes but the M-Audio gear seams to be much better then when I first used it in 2003, so I think they have usb boxes at $199 or lower, but most are two input (fine in this case) but I always feel that you need at least 8 tracks so if you end up recording an entire band you can (record drums, mix down then move on).

  2. The Laptop makes it tough, but you only need one mike, and Dynamic is the way to go with a Piano and vocals.

I will tell you how I would do this..

I would get a firewire pcmica card

    then connect a http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/MOT...face?sku=241880

I would buy at least one http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ART...eamp?sku=180581

then I have had great luck with http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Beh...hone?sku=270491 as it takes abuse and keeps going..

you would do well with any good mic and this system..

plus you can use hydrogen to get drums or procusion

    and better software like http://ardour.org/

  3. I found in collage that if a program required Windows, but was not directly related to windows, I could successfully protest as the school did not provide windows software (I used fire fox with Linux my entire time in school)

but there is also vmware, boot camp or parallels to run windows apps if you need them.

I like the build of the Mac over the HP any day, and with boot camp you can run XP or Vista on the MAC and boot into OSX when your done..

if you do that use a thumb drive or create a fat32 partition so you can share files between the different OS..

  4. Is 1 G enough ram?

yes it is enough for most things.. I have 1 gig in mine, but Mac OS is different in that ram is more important than CPU speed. so the more you put in the better.

as for where to get ram, any where that sells ram. the Mac does not take a different type of ram then other laptops, but they do check for speed and type. this is one reason they have better customer service numbers, they pick ram that is stable and not necessarily the fastest. I have bought from Crucial for a Mac

    http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp...%29%20MB062LL/B

    Anti virus..

this is the part that is hard for windows users to swallow.. but viruses really only exist on windows..

for the long answer, there are viruses for every OS made. but for Mac OSX, Linux and UNIX as a whole there are fewer than 40 active viruses and out of that most are lab only, meaning you can not get them as they are for research groups.

but if you are really worried http://www.clamxav.com/ does the best job and It's free, who says it does the best job? see here http://www.informationweek.com/software/messaging/166402818

as clamxav is using the clamav core.

as for the printer, plug it in and hit print..

also its not OSX not playing well with your printer, its manufactures of printers comming up with there own way to talk to printers and not using the standards. most of this has to do with non printing funtions of a printer, like card reader or scanner. My HP is listed as not compatable, but prints just fine, its the scanner that does not work.

  5. here is my impression

you may be better off creating scripts that will do what you want, but I don't know your level.

    as for security

I do not like remote access controlled by others, and I think it leaves you open if that company is sold, or compromised or just has a rouge employee

doing port forward can be dangerous also

so the best thought is VPN, using openVPN is simple and creates a routing between both networks, and using shared key security you can make it almost impossible, not almost, to hack into it. then you can use XP's own remote desktop to access or use vnc with out worry.

in all cases you need to balance security with completing the job. I have found that a VPN solution answers all of these, but with years of experience, what is simple for me I have found is not at all simple for others..

good luck and keep asking questions, not matter what choice you make we will help.

  6. As I have stated previously, I have just installed XP Home on my daughter-in-laws computer.

They have a web site they use for their business and it is up to me to maintain it. With both of them working and two small children their time is limited.

I am out of state and can only get up there about every 4 months and then I spend several hours updating and cleaning out their system.

They send me pictures to adjust and resize and install on the web site from here.

We both have XP Home. We both run the same programs. I am on Cable with a router and she is on DSL with a wireless router.

I know nothing about Remote Access so I have some questions.

1-Can I access and run her programs from here?

2-Does anyone need to be there if computer is on so I can access it?

3-Can I access her photo program to change pictures and install to her folders and then to web site?

4-What are the pro's and con's to using Remote Access?

5-Basically is it the same as me being there?

Sorry if these question's are silly, but just trying to gather information to explain to them.

As I said they don't have much time and that is all I have.

    Thanks

to number 5, its dangerous and will leave a big hole in the system open to any attack. if you are already clearing problems off of the computer, it can be compromised and get your system in trouble.

to fix that I use VPN software like, OpenVPN. many router have it already so it's easy. this will allow you to connect to their network securely, and not to just their computer, but entire network.

I suggest you use IPsec for encryption protocol, along with a strong password. if you have the option choose something like blowfish instead of DES3 (DES3 encryption can be cracked in under an hour) but its better than nothing, but if you do have to use it, change your key every 30 days.

if none of this makes sense then ask more questions, any one on the site would be glad to help.

but if you are going to take on administrating their PC, you need to learn the tools.

other good choices are VNC, ultra VNC http://www.uvnc.com/ is free and it can use AES encryption..

they have a good forum, but we could also answer questions.

also with this you do need to setup port forwarding on the router, but I don't like how longme "get" through the firewall. as I, in practice see this as a security issues, I believe ports should be dedicated to use, This way you can monitor it, and not have a pc broadcast its connections to a server.

nothing is fool proof, I just don't trust others to keep me safe..

also longmein states they are HIPAA complient (well they suggests with out saying it), but its right of the line that I would not approve it for corporate use.

  7. if you have monitor and stuff, they are not bad, but if you don't an Imac is my better choice. but its all up to how you will use it.

also I really want a Pico itx board.. but I can't see spending 250 on something I will just play with.. well except the the wii ..

  8. try typing this

    knoppix screen=800x600

    at the boot prompt.

also if its an Intel video chipset, there "open source" drive comes with a binary non open source core, that limits the resolution to what is programed in the card, meaning low resolutions. this is hard to fix on a live cd

    see http://roland-lopez.blogspot.com/2007/03/a...lution-fix.html

why did Intel do it this way.. well they suck.. but really they probaly assumed that normal users would not use Linux and that only people who are system builders and understand Linux would be the only ones to see this issues, as people like dell and such would program all the correct resolutions for your laptop.

    good luck

  9. a few questions?

was it source or did you use the package manager to download the kernel

but for any Linux this is the generic way

first you need to know where the files are, or better do you mean that its not the default and it does list it at boot up, but the default no pick option if the older kernel

in any case open a terminal as root (you can open a terminal use the sudo command if that is how pclinux works.)

    change directory to /boot

    cd /boot

check if your grub.conf is in this folder, some distro's keep it here. if not you should see a grub folder so cd to that

    cd grub

using a text editor exit your grub.conf

here is mine for an example

    # Boot automatically after 30 secs.
    timeout 5

    # By default, boot the first entry.
    default 0

    # Fallback to the second entry.
    fallback 1

    # Splash image to show behind grub.
    splashimage=(hd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

    # For booting GNU/Hurd
    title SteveLinux
    root (hd0,0)
    root (hd0,0)
    kernel /boot/Gentoo-Kernel2.6.23 root=/dev/hda3

    # For booting Gentoo with the static rescue shell
    title Gentoo (rescue shell)
    root (hd0,0)
    kernel /boot/Gentoo-Kernel2.6.23 root=/dev/hda3 init=/bin/bb

this file is set up to logical numbering so it starts with zero, if your menu has you new kernel, you can count which entry starting with zero and see the line that says default 0, change that number to your new kernels entry..

now if it is not in you boot menu then do the following.

copy the section for your kernel and past it to the bottom of the file and edit that section to reflect your new kernel settings

I think for pclinux it is your kernel is vmlinz-<version number>

and you have a line that says initrd /initrd-2.6.18.8.tex5.img (or something like that)

this is specific to each kernel so it should be edited to your new version name.

keep your old kernel settings incase we messed something up..

  10. if you are not using the driver from the manufacture, and are not upgrading through them, then I would use the MS driver. Its the Approved driver, but in the case of video cards my not be the "Best".

but if its a matter of trust, no matter how bad MS has done in my eyes, I see no reason not to trust that the drive they push is stable and will not hurt your system

  11. the service pack may help, but you probably will never get the the same performance until games are written specifically for vista.

the 64bit version should be faster, but the games are still 32bit so it does not matter, as you get a slowdown translating 32bit to 64 bit, instead of the run side by side of other kernels.

I know of no advantages to running Vista, right now, It has a more secure under-structure, but in our security labs for the DOD we have shown that they can easily be defeated because of attitude of a majority of windows users, and software that is installed that requires full access to kernel space, when it should not.. example is the installation program when you ok it to run , runs at full privileges, a great hack is to have the install program install more than its standard package. sp1 should I hope fix this..

once games are written for the 64bit version and you have the hardware and the 64bit version of vista, I do not see it getting better for you.

I use both, and it is night and day, but then the 64bit version allows more than 3 gigs of ram, note SP1 will allow access to the full 4gigs of ram that 32bit and address with out virtual space (we can have a discussion at other time the difference in the *nix kernels at 32 bit and the windows latter)

for now all my Microsoft Neighbors do not run Vista to play games, as not everything is in place. this should change in one of three ways in the next few years..

one, people have no real choice when it comes to OS that they run, they buy a computer and its there. the biggest majority of computers sold come with Vista now, so game builders will start to target Vista as its market share grows

two Hardware is getting faster, on my dual quadcore work dev system, vista is fast, as long as you are not coping files from a flash drive.

three, MS is coming out with the next new OS in the next few years, and by rumor ... cough.. cough.. I know people working on it.. cough they are looking at running on a much smaller footprint, see minwin...

I hope this helps, I may be Linux Admin for the site, but I do use windows all the time (I do live 15 miles from Redmond) and as for the gforce card, it has no issues running on my dual quad system... :)

  12. I have 3 folders that I don't want anyone messing with, in each of these 3 folders I have several types of files (pictures in different formats, word documents, videos in diferent formats, spreadsheets and presentations) I know that WinXP pro has an option to lock folders but the version I have on my comp is WinXP home, is there any software that I can purchase to keep my work folders safe? I want an option other than winrar whether free or paid, and one that actually locks the folder not just hide it

encrypt them using PGP.. seams the best way to me..

  13. the signs I made, the box is a candy box called Penguin Poop, Chocolate Covert Almonds, its a Christmas gag like Snow man poop that is marsh mellows)

I made this as a shot back at my neighbor, who happens to be a higher up in the Xbox 360 division (I do live 15 miles from Redmond), and I have a big inflatable TUX in my yard for Christmas. Well he put up a sign on it while I was out that said Vista Rules, Microsoft Rules. so I made this and had his 6 year old daughter, who my wife watches after school, take it to him.. as a gift:)

  14. hi all

    take heed

in the last few weeks ive switched to kubuntu

on a dual boot with xp

at the moment i do not use windows

but each day i get these kubuntu security up dates

and now my cable cap which is 5gig

is nearly finished until the 18-12-2007

kubuntu and ubuntu are real resource hogs

    if your not wealthy

\and go to the next cap level

    which is 10gig

so i may have to give it a miss

in all the years of reading about the windows sys

    beeing a hog for resources

and this has never happened to me before

    with windows

so my advice if you want to use ubuntu or kubuntu

make sure you have the gig cap

    with enough in hand

luckly my isp notified me and warned if i

went over the cap i would be paying double

as the securitys updates are five times more than windows

i know many will say these sys do not let bugs

    into the sys

    because of the up dates

but i have never had any problems with

    xp resources

ime a bit dissapointed with this result as i

was starting to like both ubuntu and kubuntu

    and i cant afford them

how many posters are like me

    marty

wow you have caps in NZ? most of us are used to unlimited, but in eaither case.

you do not need all security updates? I say agian, you do not need all security updates.

    here is why,

in windows the security updates are for everyone, because windows updates only fix the OS

in Ubuntu there are 100 of other non os progrmas and they put out patches when they are ready, and most are not security they are bug fixes.

here is the rule of thumb, if you do not use the software that is being patched, then uncheck its box. or note the patch and ask one of us to mail you a disk with them, I can do that.

remember the updates are for everything installed on ubuntu while in windows its only the Core OS..

Trust me the US Navy has this same mind set that they must download and test every patch, and they came to the conclusion that Linux must be less secure because its always being fixed.

after a couple days of talks, they finally got the picture that they may not need all the patches at all, but are so ingrained in the windows patch Tuesday's, that they cant get over all the patches..

also since Linux is open they let you know when there are issues, so they are stuck fixing them. I know many a MS worker her 20 miles out of Redmond, and all will tell you that windows has security holes they plan on never fixing.

here is another rule of thumb

if it works don't just get the newest version unless it contains things you want. I ignore most if not all kbuntu/ubuntu patches as I do not need the upgrades.

    just something to think about.

  15. Line one of the "Function" is opening the rs232 FIFO and assigning its buffer the name #1 reading in random mode and not sequencal

next they are creating an integer and two strings.

    next comes the work

    a$ = CHR$(27) + "P": PRINT #1, a$

this is really two lines in one see the :

so we assign ascii char 27 (see http://game-editor.com/tutorials/images/ascii.jpg) followed by the P

    so we have a$ = "^[P"

and the second half puts that string to the serial port (in basic you print to a port like you do the screen, and read from it like a keyboard)

    s1$ = "": c1$ = ""

this is also two lines that assign blank strings to s1$ and c1$

it looks like (with out the rest of the code this is just a guess)

    a$ = INPUT$(15, #1)

is assigning the first 15 chars from the serial port to a$

or INPUT$ is an Array and we are looking up a value that is at position 15 x the value on the serial port

then close does what it says , it closes the serial port

    the rest is simple

    s1$ = LEFT$(a$, 1)

assign the value of the array LEFT$ at position of value of a$ x 1

    c1$ = MID$(a$, 3, 8 )

again assign c1$ the value from an array based on the value of a$

    c1! = VAL(c1$) 'inst value

change string c1$ to an integer

    IF in = 2 THEN c1! = c1! * 10

I assume this is correct for qbasic but in other languages its IF in == 2 Then, so we evaluate the value of 'in' and if it equals 2 then we multiply 10 to c1! and assign that value back to its self

    IF s1$ = "-" THEN c1! = -c1! 'Convert to -ve val if -sign

check if s1$ = - and if so make c1! a negative number

    hope that helps..

  16. according to your manual. These are the beed codes they listed
    AWARD BIOS Beep Codes

    1 short: System boots successfully

    2 short: CMOS setting error

1 long 1 short: DRAM or M/B error

1 long 2 short: Monitor or display card error

1 long 3 short: Keyboard error

1 long 9 short: BIOS ROM error

    Continuous long beeps: DRAM error

    Continuous short beeps: Power error

    this may be the problem

1 long 1 short: DRAM or M/B error

by the way, nice system :-)

Thanks shanenin it's more two short beeps. At the post screen there is no error code shown. It seems that once I install the motherboard driver cd that came with the motherboard thats when it started acting up. I'm not 100% sure though.

    Thanks again

    Sceeter32

two short beeps are normal.. if you get a bunch of short beeps after that it saying it can not find your keyboard. as is listed above more than three short beeps is a bios problem, try hard resetting your bios with the jumper , and see if that ends the issue.

note, it says two small beeps are a bios setting problem, but I have found it to do two beeps if it thinks you have changed anything.
