Last night I wanted to reinstall IE6 instead of the IE7 Beta that I had. I add/removed IE7, and reinstalled IE6. It never showed a full install screen, just a pop up saying a newer version was detected. However, IE6 is now operational on my computer (I don't use it tho... I just needed it to install a sidebar, which didn't work anyway).

Anyway, a few weeks back, I had a problem with the Windows Updates. verclsid.exe (some really stupid update from microsoft) kept bogging down my computer with 300+ process of the darn thing. The only 'fix' I found for it was to disabled the automatic updates, and delete the verclsid.exe file out of my windows folder. So now Windows Update had been disabled.

Yesterday, I asked my mom if she had gotten any windows updates, and if they were successful and working correctly. She said they were, so I felt it was okay to update my computer. In doing so, I had almost 60MB worth of updates... for some 2002 programs, and stuff I didn't even have >_>. Disabling them from downloading did nothing; they downloaded anyway.

Now I have 2 trojans (or what I suspect to be 1 trojan, and 1 hijack) called dcomcfg.exe and almclk.exe. I can't seem to get rid of them. I have run the following programs about 3 times each (in this order):

1. AVG 7.1 pro virus scan

2. Registry Mechanic

3. Ad-aware

4. Spybot

5. System Mechanic 6

6. Disk Cleanup

7. Defrag

^^ That is my weekly clean up I do :P.

Anyway, all that failed to get rid of the trojan and suspected hijack. Help please ^_^?

Hi Keikonium! Welcome to Besttechie! I will be assisting you in cleaning up your computer!

Please print out all directions given for use if/when you cannot access this page.

For future posting please make sure word wrap is disabled in notepad prior to posting your log.

It looks like you have two firewalls currently running on your computer. 1: Zone Alarm, 2. an AVG firewall. Please disable one of them. It is never good to have more then one firewall running, as they can conflict and often worsen your protection.

Scan with HJT and place a check next to the following items:

O2 - BHO: Nothing - {b0398eca-0bcd-4645-8261-5e9dc70248d0} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpBBFD.tmp

O9 - Extra button: Subscribe in Desktop Sidebar - {09FE188B-6E85-479e-9411-51FB2220DF80} - blank (file missing)

O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Subscribe in Desktop Sidebar - {09FE188B-6E85-479e-9411-51FB2220DF80} - blank (file missing)

O16 - DPF: {01347765-1965-426B-91A4-AA6BB342B9A3} (InstallerObj Class) - http://www.1-click.com/common/files/instal...hidden-test.cab

O16 - DPF: {88D758A3-D33B-45FD-91E3-67749B4057FA} - http://dm.screensavers.com/dm/installers/si/1/sinstaller.cab

Then, make sure all browser windows and other applications are closed, and click the Fix Checked button.

Boot into Safe Mode:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Once in safe mode, find and delete the following file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpBBFD.tmp

Then, reboot your computer normally.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser

  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser

  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan

  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

Finally, post a new HJT log and the Panda Report.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd

Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).

Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

Download CWShredder Here to its own folder.

Update CWShredder

  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder

Boot into Safe Mode:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about. Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.

  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.

[*]Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\atmclk.exe

    c:\windows\system32\ot.ico

    c:\windows\secure32.html

[*] Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.

[*]Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Find and delete the following folders

c:\windows\uniq

c:\windows\system32\1024

Finally, post back with a new HJT log, and the text file generated by smitfraudfix.

When I ran CWShredder in Safe Mode, all the files it searched for were NOT present. It said that CoolWebSearch was not found on my system.

I also did not receive any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt's from Killbox.

The folder: "c:\windows\uniq" was not there. I looked for it in system32, and it was not there either. I also did a systemwide search and nothing turned up. The 1024 folder was located and deleted.

Here is a my new HJT log (after doing everything you have said):

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd

Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.

Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All

Click the Empty Selected button.

NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Finally, post the Active Scan report, the newest log generated by smitfraudfix, and a new HJT log.

Almost done!

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Folders to delete:

c:\windows\uniq

c:\program files\Media-Codec

Files to delete:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Favorites\Antivirus Test Online.url

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.

5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log by using Add/Reply

Congrats! Your log is clean!

How is your system running?

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

  1. Firefox- Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera is good as well.
  2. Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  3. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  4. SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep malware from installing on your system.
  5. SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  6. IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  7. ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from web browsers, and much more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  8. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  9. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein and this guide on safer computing.

Tired of all this malware junk? You can do something about it! Malware affects millions of computer users, and frankly, we're ready to complain! We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints: Malware Complaints. You do not need to register to post, just find your country room and state your complaint.

The infection you had was Spywarequake

My system runs great :D. Now when viewing my process list, I know what everything is, and I know it's okay to have in there.

Thanks for all your help Matt, it was great and very easy to understand! Half the programs you recommended during the clean up I had never heard of lol.

I will have to download SpywareBlaster/Guard... I have the other programs.

Thanks again ^_^
