First Cookout

Had the first cookout of the season Sunday.

On Saturday we made a ten pound chuck roast with potatoes, carrots, and cabbage (New England Boiled Dinner) and had the boys , grandkids and a few neighbors over. That went down so well and the weather was so beautiful that I figured sunday was time to break out the grill. Perfect weather in the eighties. They had chicken leg quarters on sale for 19Cents a pound so that had to be a sign.

Ten pounds of Chicken legs, Ten pounds of hamburgers , Ten pounds of Potato salad and baked beans (Not to mention ten two liter bottles of soda and three cases of Dr Pepper).

All in all a very pleasant get together . Kind of puts me in the mood for a few more of these this spring.

Save???

It is all gone gone.

We had two burgers, two drumsticks and a thigh left from the cookout . Everything else was history by 6PM.

As for the roast, still some cabbage and a little (very little ) roast left, but the taters and carrots are gone.

Yeah, I at first visualized cooking once and eating all week (beef stew , cold chicken, burger steaks) but it soon was obvious that it was going to be devoured.

Spring it cookout weather here; since in summer it gets to blazing hot to be outside cooking during the afternoons .

Up here in the frozen north we enjoy grilling all through the winter. It's a fun way to stay warm and enjoy fresh air.

I grill year around here in minnesota. All winter the grilling is done in the garage. Just yesterday I pulled the grill outside and did it right. I think I have a new favorite fish. I did mahi mahi on the grill. It is great.

I leave mine outside all winter to. Nothing like driving the neighbors crazy grilling when it's 10 below and snowing.

Mailman hates it when he comes by and the grill is going. Makes his mouth water and his is buried in his garage. :lol:

I too like Mahi Mahi ; but the OL thinks any fish you cannot batter and fry is not edible.

Gotta get a Gassy someday. Too cold up here to grill with charcoal in the winter! Only problem is convincing Hubby--he likes the charcoal grills.

I STILL WANT STEAK! Hmmmm, maybe this weekend (high 50's up here, but oh, Pete, 80's sound wonderful!)

I have used a weber charcoal grill most of my life. I thought that was the TRUE way to grill. My mother and father in-law bought us a gas grill last spring, I love it(I'm a convert). It makes cooking so easy, and the food still tastes good and smokey.

I like to throw a couple of DelMonicos on the grill at least once a month...even if I have to snowthrow a path to the grill.

Pete can you still get the Dr Pepper made with cane sugar in Texas?

Actually, with the OLs diabetes we pretty much stick to the Diet; which fortunately here in Texas is now sweetened with Splenda.

Two cases of Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr Pepper, one of regular Diet.

The two liters were mainly for the kids (Root beer, Grape, Black Cherry etc) .

To get the cane sugar one you either have to order online or drive the 150 miles to Dublin Texas

As noted, big "Birthday Bash" there in a couple months (June 10th)

Visitors will be treated to free Dublin Dr Pepper and free tours of the bottling plant and museum all day long. The food booths will be run by one of our favorite charitable organizations, the Knights of Columbus, and will have a definite Texas taste. And of course, everyone will also be invited to share in Dublin Dr Pepper's huge 115th birthday cake.

Time to start planning this weekends Easter Bash, since the kids are comming again. So far Ham is on the menu, meaning also blackeyed feild peas with snaps, cornbread (muffins) and of course mac and cheese.

Correctamundo.

I prefer the vernacular OL, since we are common law married (it has been 22 years); although she introduces me to everyone as her husband Pete. And Marty is correct; she rarely goes online. She once went to school to study to be a computer tech, wound up getting a MOUS (Microsoft Office User Specialist? ) certification and never using it . She has a short temper when it comes to computers and when it does something she does not like or fails to do what she wants she threatens to throw it out the window.

Besides which we are "Old" now (Well she is Kim Basinger's age; and Kim does not look old so maybe we aren't that old).

If I had five dollars for every time I have threatened to throw this 'personal confuser' out the window, I could go buy a nice new one!!! :rolleyes:

Cookouts for this area will be rained out over next few days, a good storm system is tracking towards us for tonight on, for rain here in the Willamette Valley, but low (below pass levels) snow levels in Cascade moutains with 1 to 2 feet of snow expected. That may put a crimp in people's Easter travel plans from one side of the state to another, no studded tires or chains after April 1st, I hope people use them anyhow if needed in spite of the ban. I hope the high 30's Sunday night temperature is lowest it goes for us, to many things springing up early and lots of stuff in mid bloom too such as my plums, sure don't need a hard frost.

Thankfully the only 'snow' here is from the pretty white cherry blossoms blowing in the breeze.

Yeah. just pups.

I mentioned that Kim was her age and wore it well and here response was "And I Don't??? My hair still isn't grey. People still usually think we are in our late thirties, early forties at the oldest."

Had to unruffle her feathers and explain that that was not what I was saying at all.

In the low nineties now and for the weekend.

Looking forward to the party.

The OL wants me to get some wine for adults and we are having a ham and a pork loin; beans (probably pork and pintos or baked beans ) potato salad , deviled eggs, cornbread . Still have to figure out some veggies, probably things like carrots, celery, greenbeans , zuccinni slices and a few dips for snacking on while dinner cooks.

With that, it looks like light eating in advance. Have to buy some veggies for pasta prima vera tonite.
