novi Posted April 1, 2006 Report Share Posted April 1, 2006 Greetings All,I am looking for a good start page. I have lycos as my start page but, as of March 31st it is no longer customizable. I was able to have access to the local papers, local theater's, local weather, customizable sports news and such. I was also able to put special links on the page. If anyone knows of a place where I might be able to have some of the same features as above please let me know. Thanks, Pat Quote Link to post Share on other sites

medab1 Posted April 1, 2006 Report Share Posted April 1, 2006 (edited) Make your own & you can add anything you want.Make a Folder in My Documents.Add the HTML document & any images & such needed things to the folder.Open the HTML document (webpage) & drag & drop the IE icon in the address textarea to the Home icon in the Toolbar & follow the prompt to set it as your Homepage.You could add a favicon if you wish...Edit--Of course you will need to know how to use HTML. mikex Posted April 1, 2006 Report Share Posted April 1, 2006 Make it google, because it has little content and load fast. Or learn a bit of html and make your own. Have all your favorite sites there loads fast because it is stored on your harddrive. You also get some knowledge from building the code. I did my own and as sites dropped in content quality I remove and added something else. can also have links to folders and applications on your harddrive.M Quote Link to post Share on other sites

martymas Posted April 1, 2006 Report Share Posted April 1, 2006 hi novihave you tried yahooi use a local start page xtramsn and it is ok for local content tho i see it has a contract with microsoft to go world widei very rarely use search engines when i found google used our personal searches and data over a period of time when i was a poster at techtv c.f.hgoogle logged every post i made to the message boardand that p-----ed me off now i see the white house is trying to access that data google was trying to fight it but now have agreed to release certain addresses.so search engines are out for me instead of me going to google i have all the data on cds so i feel no one is honing in on my privacymarty Quote Link to post Share on other sites

TheTerrorist_75 Posted April 3, 2006 Report Share Posted April 3, 2006 You had to do it didn't you Pat?! I decided I would have to figure out how to make my own start page. I started going through those links at PC World and said screw it. I searched Google and found the following sites dealing with HTML. http://www.pagetutor.com/pagetutor/makapage/ Popup blocker required!HTML tagsIt took me close to 6 hours to figure out what this HTML stuff does.This is what I came up with. I used Notepad and created a folder in My Documents to hold the .html file I created and the Picture I used for the header plus I saved my different links in .txt files to Copy & Paste into the .html file.This is what I made: My Tech Page.html<html><head><title>My Tech Page</title></head><body bgcolor="#DDDDDD"><center><img src="MyTechPage.gif" width="600" height="94" alt="My Tech Page"></center><br><table cellpadding="3" cellspacing="2" width="100%"><tr><td bgcolor="#330000"><font face="Times New Roman" size="+2" color="#FFFFFF"><center>Favorite Tech Sites</center></font></td><td bgcolor="#330000"><font face="Times New Roman" size="+2" color="#FFFFFF"><center>Malware Removal</center></font></td><td bgcolor="#330000"><font face="Times New Roman" size="+2" color="#FFFFFF"><center>More Useful Links</center></font></td></tr><tr><td><a href="http://www.besttechie.net/forums/index.php?" target="_blank">BestTechie Forums</a><br><br><a href="http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/" target="_blank">Bleeping Computer</a><br><br><a href="http://castlecops.com/" target="_blank">CastleCops</a><br><br><a href="http://forums.g4tv.com/categories.cfm?catid=64" target="_blank">G$ Tech Support</a><br><br><a href="http://www.geekstogo.com/" target="_blank">geeks to go</a><br><br><a href="http://www.landzdown.com/index.php" target="_blank">LandzDown</a><br><br><a href="http://maddoktor2.com/index.php" target="_blank">SpyWare BeWare!</a><br><br><a href="http://www.spywarewarrior.com/" target="_blank">Spyware Warrior</a><br><br><a href="http://forums.spywareinfo.com/" target="_blank">SWI forums</a><br><br><a href="http://techrepublic.com.com/1330-4-20.html?tag=header" target="_blank">TechRepublic</a><br><br><a href="http://thearena.invisionzone.com/index.php?&&CODE=autologin&fromreg=1" target="_blank">The Arena</a><br><br><a href="http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?" target="_blank">TomCoyote</a><br><br><a href="http://www.windowsbbs.com/index.php?" target="_blank">WindowsBBS</a></td><td><b>Online virus scanners</b><br><br><a href="http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/activescan.asp?Language=2" target="_blank">Panda ActiveScan</a><br><br><a href="http://housecall.trendmicro.com/" target="_blank">Housecall</a><br><br><a href="http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner" target="_blank">Kaspersky</a><br><br><b>Trojan removal</b><br><br><a href="http://www.ewido.net/en/download/" target="_blank">ewido anti-malware for Win2K/XP</a><br><br><a href="http://rstones12.geekstogo.com/ewidosetup.htm" target="_blank">ewido anti-malware tutorial</a><br><br><b>Adware removal</b><br><br><a href="http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/" target="_blank">AdAware SE (Free download at the right)</a><br><br><a href="http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial48.html" target="_blank">AdAware SE tutorial</a><br><br><a href="http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html" target="_blank">Spybot-S&D</a><br><br><a href="http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial43.html" target="_blank">Spybot-S&D tutorial</a></td><td><form method="get" action="http://www.google.com/search" target="_blank"><div style="border:1px solid black;padding:4px;width:20em;"><table border="0" cellpadding="0"><tr><td><input type="text" name="q" size="25" maxlength="255" value="" /><input type="submit" value="Google Search" /></td></tr><tr><td style="font-size:75%"><input type="checkbox" name="sitesearch" value="http://www.besttechie.net/forums/index.php?" target="_blank" checked /> Search BestTechie<br /><br><input type="checkbox" name="sitesearch" value="http://www.windowsbbs.com/index.php?" target="_blank" checked /> Search WindowsBBS<br /></div></form></td></tr></table></body></html>My header image.My start page image. TheTerrorist_75 Posted April 4, 2006 Report Share Posted April 4, 2006 I found one of my first start pages at Geocities made with Page Wizard. I decided to see if I could input my homemade start page into it. Here are the results. I need to find a different free host though I can't stand the Yahoo ads at the right. Of course they don't show in Opera.My Tech Page Quote Link to post Share on other sites

TheTerrorist_75 Posted April 4, 2006 Report Share Posted April 4, 2006 i have no start page so when you load it its ready to go no waitingThe idea of a start page for me is to make it my Home Page for my browsers. This gives me a handy area to click my favorite most used links instead of going to my Bookmarks. Quote Link to post Share on other sites

If I have it hosted though I could add more pages for even more stuff. I eventually want to create a site for my NASCAR race club plus other things I am into. Playing with this helps me understand how to create these. Also if it's not hosted others have problems telling what works and what doesn't. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
