xxkbxx
Due to complete boredom and lots of free time (at the moment) I devised a plan/project that I thought was worth sharing. When I planned on building my first PC, I had a really difficult time finding a website with a tutorial, or a progression of some sort in building the whole thing. The best I could find were all-text guides (like that on tigerdirect.com and a few shauddy pages with pictures. My idea would be to set up a PayPal charity type fund - with the proceeds going towards building a relatively simple computer - Socket A board, Athalon XP, 256 MB RAM - really inexpensive. I would probably buy most the parts of off eBay then complete the build. If I had increased support, I'd even go further with mod's and make it more complex. While building, I'd be sure to take PLENTY of pictures (using my dad's Nikon D70, very high quality pics) along with step by step notes on building a computer.Another portion of the donations would go towards hosting the page online.I haven't even worked any details, this is all just flowing straight from one of those random ideas, but Does anybody see any potential in such a project? Honda_Boy
sounds like a good Idea. go for it.You wanna know how I learned how to build a computer? I tore down and rebuilt 2 or 3 different towers. Natural curiosity took over...........................time after time after time. thesidekickcat
From my bookmarks:This looks like a good tutorial, and go to step one and at top of page if you want to buy a cd of full tutorial with pictures, for what sounds like a reasonable price.PC Mechanic Tutorial to build your own PCWindows Reinstall How to build your own computerI thought I had more, but that seems to be all for now. Not a big priority for me as I am not at all mechanical, just thought I'd keep the links in case my mechanical hubby was interested.PatGod bless everyone.
parkgoons
perhaps put up an add or two at your local grocery store, a friend and I did that about 3 months ago for computer repair. Just simple repairs like cleaning up the HDD and setting up some basic security for the client, we charge a flat fee of 25$ a computer (really cheap compared to GeekSquad and the others). We get about 10 to 12 calls a month. Its free advertising so it cant hurt. Give it a shot. Make sure not to come off as a con artist or anything just flat out say what your trying to accomplish. xxkbxx
I learned by taking apart crap - then with an internship at a local store (work there part-time now)I am most likely going to put out an advertisement locally in our neighborhood's newsletter around April or May. With that money, I do believe I could build the machine just for that cause! I'll get back to this after school

Maybe i should check out the local grocery store bulletin board. Just curious what content do you have in your ad? Edited March 13, 2006 by shanenin
TheTerrorist_75
I built my first computer by following the PC Mechanic tutorial.
Dragon
(really cheap compared to GeekSquad and the others).Thats not hard to do when you figure geeksquad charges $225 just to come clean out the crapware in computers. and half the time when it comes to computer repair, they come to your house figure out whats wrong with it, then take it back to BestBuy to get it fixed. When GeekSquad first started back in the mid-90's in California, they came to your house or business with all the parts necessary to fix a computer, whether it was a Laptop or Desktop, they had it all, mobo's, ram, hdd's, CPU's etc....Now that they are owned by BestBuy, they don't come with half the stuff they need, so it ends up costing the customer more in the end. xxkbxx
The newsletter I plan on putting it in is a 12 page newsletter distributed to around 530 houses in my neighborhood. I've probably already done about 15 jobs over the past while just from word of mouth - 9 times out of 10 it's just loading on spysweeper then cleaning up their junk - or uninstalling windows messenger - FREE V1AGRA, T33N PORN & SUCH! - The cost is:Outside Cover $75 per issueInside Front Page $50 per issueInside Fold $25 per issueThe mockup I did (business card size) had a ghosted computer with BOEHM COMPUTER REPAIR written over it. I also had something along the lines of - computer repair in your own home for a reasonable price.I figure 1 job will easily pay for 1 issue's advertising, and by the time I work for 6 or 7 different people, most jobs will be from word of mouth. My main problem is that I'm juggling school (until June), work (till 6 Tue-Fri, 10-4 Sat) and another class at night for the next 3 weeks. That's why I'm delaying ad until April or May.In the past (with a different job, Christmas tree removal service) it worked out best to advertise by putting 1/4 sheets of paper in people's mailboxes, of course it took a few hours - but we got over 100 some jobs ranging from $3-$10 each. The only problem with that is some a-hole always complains about touching his precious mailbox!

Your fliers are considered unstamped mail. Edited March 14, 2006 by TheTerrorist_75

I know our mail women pretty well and she mentioned the notes I did and said it's not an issue unless somebody raised major hell - then they would just "warn me"
