Bubba Bob
Hey guys,I know yall are great with puters, but what about cars? Cruising at around 70mph today, an 18 wheeler passed me. When the wind turbulence hit, my car jumped out of voer drive, flashed the check engine light, then when back into O/D. So, i kept on driving like nothing was wrong. I got to my destination fine. However, when going home the damn tranny slipped, engaged, slipped, engaged... untill I let off the gas. I pulled over, checked the fluid. It looked low. So, I found an auto store, and added about 3/4 a quart of fluid. Now, when I got home I realized I had missread the dip stick. THe fluid was never low, and now I probably have about half a quart too much in. LOL!!! Great day huh? ANyway, I noticed it seems to slip out of OD when I hit bumps. Also, when doing about 35MPH, I hit a real rough part of road. The CEL flashed a couple times at me then to.I hope to get the CEL read tomorow. Untll then, any thoughts on WTF is wrong?Thannks
TheTerrorist_75
On many automatics with overdrive they should downshift when hit with a high headwind or going up a steep grade. There is a electronic module within the transmission that will start to fail and cause constant downshifting or slipping. You will need to have it hooked up to a diagnostic machine. Dodge is well known for the failure of this module.
Honda_Boy
Get a Honda........... just had to say sry man.I had an old sunbird with a pretty f'ed up tranny or so it seemed. Had probs where the whole transmission would disengage. I got to the point where I had to turn the car off every 10 seconds of driving. I drove for 10 seconds parked it turned it off shifted back into drive for another 10 seconds and you get the idea. Mechanic thought it was gonna be a $1200 rebuild. I told him I'd push the car off a cliff. Well after a week or 2 without a car I got my Civic. My granddad came down one day while I was at school and got to work on the old thing. It was a little cheapo transmission filter. the car ran fine but I had a shiny 10 year newer Honda. By the way That sunbird was a rarity. 1985 Hatchback. J body GM's only came in hatchback rom 85-87. These are rarer than Fieros. (My brother had an 88 four banger pile of crap). Th only extras this bad boy had was AC (Compresor was broke when I got it though) and factory aluminum wheels, and they are the only set I've ever seen like em. Something that wasn't even available on EG Civics like mine. Only Del Sols had em. If that Sunbird was a 87 GT with factory turbo then we would have an extreme rarity.Anyway sry for rambling, try checking your trans filter. Could be clogged and need to be replaced. Lucky for me I have a manual so I don't have that filter.
TheTerrorist_75
I don't drive a Dodge or own one. I do work on them now and then. If your manual trans is slipping out of overdrive then either the clutch is starting to fail, the hydraulic clutch system is low on fluid, needs bleeding, fluid needs to be replaced, fluid was sluggish due to low temperatures (should improve when it warms up) or the clutch master cylinder is failing. Bubba Bob
Get a Honda........... biggrin.gif just had to say sry man. Heh, nah thanks.THanks for the replies. I took it to my mechanic, Joe, who told me to take it to his transmission guy, Bob. ( , actual names, AND business names)Anyway, I guess we will see what Bob says. Right now Im not sure if this car is even worth transmission work. You will need to have it hooked up to a diagnostic machine. Is this something only a Ford dealership would have? Thanks

Dragon
depends on the year of the vehicle. if it is a newer model (99-present) it has a connection point right under the steering wheel or under the dash on the passengers side, depending on car manufacturer, anyway those take about 10 seconds to hook up and 2 minutes for the comp to download the info from the brainbox.Older models usually have the connectors under the hood of the car and once again take about 10-20 seconds to hook up, once found, and about 2 minutes to diagnose it.You need to remember, they charge a flat fee rate based on books created by the manufacturer specs. so even for a 5 minute inpection you can still be charged the full hour charge. Thats why you never take your car to a dealership for work, IMHO. My cars never see a dealership mechanic, they see my local mechanic. I recently checked with ford for a pre-heater pipe for my escort GT, they wanted $500 for a 12" length of tube plus installation, took it to my mechanic, he charged me $150 installed. I'm actually surprised this ford is still running, it now has 200,000 miles on it as of today, and still runs like it did from day one. Of course what do you expect from an engine made by Mitsubishi. My dodge on the other hand, needs a new engine, after I replaced the Head gasket two years ago, and it only has 117,000 on it. No wonder more people are going to foreign cars. Average Honda engine will not see any serious problems until it hits about 300,000 miles. any way rambled on enough here./me gets down off his soap box now.
Bubba Bob
My cars never see a dealership mechanic, they see my local mechanic.Same here. Anyway, I just got back from Bob's. Im just sellin it. I dont feel like sinking more than the car is worth into it.Oh well, I got this cheap, crappy car to get my through a rough patch. It did it's duty, now it's time to get something with a little power. **evil cackle** Edited February 23, 2006 by Bubba Bob
TheTerrorist_75
I retired my old '88 Chevy Caprice last year. It had well over 300,000 on it and never required any major engine or transmission work. Good old 305 with a 700-R4 tranny. Damn thing got just over 20mpg mostly city driving. I would have kept it but the body fell apart. Damn winters here are tough with all the salt on the roads. That's the second Chevy Caprice that I retired with over 300,000 on it. The other was a '66 with 283 and 2-spd. power glide. That also got over 20mpg. You just can't beat a well maintained V-8 Chevy.
Drews_World
and about 2 minutes to diagnose it.Actually... In most cases it takes alot more then 2 min. to actually DIAGNOSE the problem...you can goto any local "autozone" and they will just scan it for free and tell you what the computer says...but if now you know that there is: misfire cyl 4, camsen ckt opn sht, and H02 B1S2 ckt opn sht do you really have any idea on how to fix it properly instead of just throwing a cam sensor, an 02 sensor AND a tune-up at it?MOST dealerships (and full service shops) will actually diagnose the problem so you only have to replace the ONE part that is causing all the problems/me clears throat Edited February 23, 2006 by Drews_World

Running the scan is all they could do.Ive never had to pay to "diagnose" a problem. I dont see why anyone would take their vehicle to a dealer unless its last resort. My last mechanic charged $40 an hour. The only differnce between him and a dealer was he had no eye appealing building, nice looking service area, or a nice location. Bubba Bob
Well, I just got back from the Ford Dealership. I bought an 05' Ford Focus ZX4 SE for $10k. They gave me $1K for my POS trade in. I think something is wrong with it though, the steering is tight, transmission stays in gear, and It doesnt shake/vibrate while going highway speeds. Also, I forgot to get my Chevy Repair Kit bumper sticker off Here are a couple pics: Edited February 28, 2006 by Bubba Bob
