Thanks.<{POST_SNAPBACK}>The router should have a built in switch on the back (Four ports labled LAN to connect computers to , one labled WAN to connect the modem to).You just connect each computer to the Router, the router manual should include instructions on how to configure both the Win98 and WinXP machine to connect to it.Then the next step is to check that both computers have the same workgroup name. In Win98 go to control panel/ network Click the identification tab and change the workgroup.http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/win98.htmXP you right click on my computer/ properties/ Name/ workgroup / changeInsert the name .http://www.geekgirls.com/windowsxp_home_network.htmBoth will require restart after you change name of workgroup. Then you need to run your firewalls configuration wizard to allow the home network (or turn off firewalls since the NAT of the router offers some protection)[url=http://www.practicallynetworked.com/]http://www.practicallynetworked.com/[/url
The Dragon Slayer
Thanks, Pete. So, there is no need to use Networking wizard on the computers. Just follow the D-Link 524 set up wizard instructions? ...but it never asks me for the name of the workgroup.
Parrotgeek7
Under you NIC properties you will assigm the workgroup name . It also might be a good thing to check to make sure yo have both tcp/ip and netbios installed on both machines (again under the NIC properties), it makes networking the 98 machine to XP easier (if you ever choose to use search for computers to find the other one)

DumbTerminal
All the info you need should be provided in the links and posts above.I believe you can run the wizard on your XP machine, then save it to disk and run it on the 98 machine. That would be the quick way (if it works) but you won't learn anything that way.The router doesn't need to know anything (workgroup name) about your network. It should work fine out of the box
The Dragon Slayer
I got the cable. After having read all about networking, I followed the instructions to connect the D-Link 524 to the DSL modem and the computers. I have internet access on both XP and 98. I put in the same workgroup name on both computers; however, I don't seem to see the workgoup (XP and 98 connected by ethernet cable) on either computer. On the 98 machine, it asks me for the network password on every bootup. Or do I have to turn on both machines for the network to show? Do I have to run the "Network connection wizard" on the XP? Now I'm using the XP and the 98 is off. Any comment is appreicated! Also, I cannot see the wireless network when I click network connection. It only gives me the local area connection. What did I do wrong here? Edited August 31, 2005 by The Dragon Slayer
Parrotgeek7
Make sure you have netbios/netbui installed under your protocols, your firewalls turned off and file and print sharing enabled and something actually has to be shared.Use the "search" button to find other computers on the network, Hint hint.
