shanenin
were you trying to install your nvidia drivers last?I am not sure if ubuntu is the same as my system, but look at the last part of this log, it may say something important, give you an idea of what went wrong. the cat command just reads filescat /var/log/Xorg.0.logif you made that shared fat partition, you could just copy the file over, then use windows to post the log if it seems to show what may have went wrong. shanenin
everything seems pretty normal. the only thing that seemed odd were your horizontal sync and vertical refresh rates, are those settings accurate?Section "Monitor"Identifier "Monitor0"Option "DPMS"HorizSync 28-49VertRefresh 43-72EndSectionSection "Monitor"Identifier "Monitor1"Option "DPMS"HorizSync 28-49VertRefresh 43-62EndSection
fubz
yup, they are fine. I've ran it before with all of those settings perfectly
iccaros
try booting a live cd.. mount your harddrive. copy /etc/X11/xorg.conf to your harddrives /etc/X11/ folder.reboot.you should have X server..make a back up of that filethen edit the main one to change the video driver to nvidia. hit cntrl-alt-backspace to see if X restarts.. if not copy the backup back to the original file..and post the out put of /var/log/X11/xorg-??? (note this will have a date and time or say current)and post the output of the command lsmodif you step by step let me know.
fubz
Ok what i did was edit the xorg.conf and changed driver to "nv" that was your short way to fix it :-p (kinda), but now my second monitor isnt working. Also, i have backups of all the files i have edited. So ya... thats the one thing i have learned so far.
shanenin
try this lsmod | grep nvidiaThe problem may be your nvidia module is not being auto loaded at boot. Since your reboot is when it failed.when I run the command it shows it is loadedshane@mainbox shane $ lsmod | grep nvidianvidia 3469660 12if yours is not loaded try this as rootmodprobe nvidiathen change nv back to nvidia then kill and restart your X server. fubz
I think i know the problem... my nvidia driver. How do i go about uninstalling it so i can reinstall it?This has got to be part that makes windows soo much easier......

shanenin
I agree with iccaros, I think the problem is to do with ati_agp . I have no solution though. if you used apt-get to install the driver, you could use apt-get to uninstall it. If you used nvidias installer, just install over it to reinstall. iccaros
change this line Option "NvAGP" "3"to say Option "NvAGP" "0"and then back to nvidia for the driver.. see if it works..if it does try changing that to Option "NvAGP" "1"3 tells it to load the first agp driver it can find..here from the nvidia read me.. - Option "NvAGP" "0" Disable AGP - Option "NvAGP" "1" Use NVIDIA's AGP GART Driver - Option "NvAGP" "2" Use the OS AGP GART driver (agp.ko) - Option "NvAGP" "3" Attempt "2", fall back to "1"I think ubuntu built in agp / ati agp and nvidia agp.. so its loading atiagp as its first in order

This problem should be fixable1. were the nvidia drivers working for a while, at what point did they stop working?2. what exact procedure did you use to install the nvidia drivers? iccaros
didn't work, looks like i should just reinstall..... one day..... i was really liking that command line thing.<{POST_SNAPBACK}>well if you reinstall .. when we hit this part agian we can move on from here seriously, I do not see this as a install problem.. now I would suggest you not use the ubuntu install and go to nvidia and download the driver from them, and install that way.. fubz
Ok this is what i did.I went to the Ubuntu guide, followed the instructions for installing nvidia drivers, worked great.I went to nvidia website, ohhh a later version, i always have to have the latest version. So i download it and install it.then my sound was being weird, and i have ATI north/south bridge, so i goto ATi.com. Ok linux drivers, GART ok, these are the mohterboard drivers if i remember correctly, if not it will tell me it cant install display drivers. So i downloaded them, installed them. after that its all foggy..... one morning i turned on my computer.OMG LINUX HATES YOU YOU LINUX NOOB DIE!so ya...

I used to be .. get the newest driver.. make games faster.. but that was windows.. windows in my openion always needed updateing so you get used to always updating.. this lead to may a broken Linux boxes and here is why..,the newest nvidia update may still be behind the newest distro update.. even with a newer release number.. why .. ubuntu, Red Hat, Suse, Gentoo all pass there changes to the non propritary parts of the driver to nvidia but add them to there driver. Nvidia addes these chages to there version they pass out. Nvidia (thank God) put out a Linux driver, but they don't test them except on the few test machines they have. So the newest driver can break other things on your system. They wait untill it breaks a few systems .. get the reports back and bam.. they release a fix.. your distrobution will only push the working versions of the driver as they would like it to work out of the box.
