barcuss
This is a basic home built computer about a year ago, nothing special just for the internet. Started running windows 7 and then the upgrade to Windows 10 a couple of months ago. For the past couple of weeks the PC has been shutting down randomly. No rhyme nor reason to the issue. Someone told me years ago the worst thing you can do is turn it off because of the sudden burst of electricity so it runs 24/7 plus I'm so impatient it drives me crazy to wait for it to power up even though it only takes about a minute to power up and get the browser back up. That said even with the computer running and not being used it will crash and this happens a couple of times per day. I have used AVG and cleaned the computer, run scans and it finds nothing so I am beginning to believe it might be a hardware issue. Also another weird thing is the mouse becomes unresponsive from time to time and is jumpy and I have to click several times to get it o work, and sometimes when I click its like it thinks I still have my finger on the mouse button to highlight a sentence or relocate something. I have changed the batteries etc and still have the problem. This issue seems to happen a couple of times per hour, then it will operate normally for a while. The computer has been cleaned out because my first thought was it was overheating so I removed the CPU and blew out all the dust and still no help. Pete_C
When you built it did you put fiber washers both above and below the motherboard at each of the mounting screws? What you describe sounds like a motherboard that is not properly insulated. Over time the screws may have loosened or bit into the board; the board is shorting through the screws. Disassemble and put it together properly. Could be heat , even though you blew out the dust. Use a monitor program to check the board and processor temps.Check your event log files to see if windows noted a cause.
Pete_C
I am going to hazard that your problem may be similar to mine and could possibly be related to start menu and task bar issues caused by windows update. Check your event viewer / system logs to see if an update was installed / installing just before the crash.
flashh4
Regarding the task bar issues, have you tried opening Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del, click Task Manager)Click on File>New Task (Run) and enter "explorer.exe" (without the quotes)Then click OK. It was a fix reported at W10 forums !!Just a thought !Chuck
barcuss
Thanks Pete, I have found the event viewer but I don't know how to tell when and if an update happened.
barcuss
Pete and Chuck, are you saying that my computer shutting down randomly and the trouble with my mouse being jumpy and slow/unresponsive is related to the task bar? Also, Chuck I did as you advised running explorer.exe Edited November 24, 2015 by barcuss
flashh4
Barcuss, it's possible ! Never hurts to try a fix that helped others ! Have you noticed if it helped !! Chuck
Pete_C
Chuck, the problem I have is that windows update disables a bunch of things. Taskbar being one of them.Once the update completes, they return.I suspect it is more common than a lot of people realize; but most get the updates at a time that they are not active (leave the computer on all the time) barcussin event viewer, look for anything that says error. You can actually click the events one at a time and it will describe them. flashh4
Pete, that's a new one i have not heard of ! Have you tried a repair install ? Have you looked on the W10 forums to see if anyone has a problem like that ? I have 3 computers & never had any problem out of them with the new W10 ! Chuck
barcuss
In administrative events there are 2550 events since 8/21/15 mostly warning's. I would guess probably the percentage at about 60/40 Warning's to Error's. 27 Error's since yesterday morning.
flashh4
Pete has always been good at stuff like this, i usually do the Malware logs so i'm gonna turn this all over to him, if he wants to handle it !!Good LuckChuck
Pete_C
What sort of errors? Are they all the same or similar (IE a service failed to start or stopped unexpectedly? Which service)You might want to run the suggested malware scans and post them for chuck to review. In event viewer you can highlight the content of the error and then hit ctrl+c to copy it (if right click copy does not work) and past here likeFor example I got this notice (information)Windows Update started downloading an update. Then I got this errorUser Logoff Notification for Customer Experience Improvement Program

flashh4
Barcuss, after reading the Malwarebytes log i would like for you to go to the "Malware Section" here and start me a new topic so we can run a few more programs. It may not help your problem but i think we will find more junk that needs removed !! ThanksChuck
Pete_C
I agree, the problem looks like it is caused by a bad plugin crashing firefox and taking everything with it.Source of the bad plugin appears to be malware.
barcuss
Thanks Pete and Chuck, I am going out of town for work today but I will be back on Friday and will start the malware clean up process. I use Firefox and Chrome and have noticed the past couple of days it seems to be when I'm using Firefox that this happens.
