blim
Ooooooh, Macmarauder, do you have one of those orbity things over your head, like in the commercials?? AOL's software is one of the reasons I did not like it! It was fun to hear, "you've got mail" (I love mail!) but the kindergarten layout bugged me. And we were constantly getting kicked off.I'm so happy cable came to our area--our phone line is no longer tied up--and when you're dealing with driving teenagers, you want a free phone line, "just in case". The kids would get so mad when I asked them to give the net a rest in case kid-with-car needed to call home--now I just nag them to get up and stretch the legs once in a while Liz
bozodog
*gets up and walks around a bit...Blim, what cable system are you on?I have Charter here... two choices, 385 or 3 meg.
blim
Bozodog, we have Charter, too (which by the way was fussy this afternoon!) We have a choice 3 speeds (last I knew, anyway...). Ours is the lowest--I looked for a bill to check the speed, but couldn't find one (we pay that one early--$5 latefee!) Probably the 385 gigawatt....or $39.95 mo. plenty fast enough for us!Liz
bozodog
jeesh, we pay $43 a month and get the 3meg... that's the tops! But then again I really like going fast.
tenmm
Package deal here,tv and cable internet for around $65.00, I think it is 3-4meg.
blim
Bozodog, Charter has been calling with a deal that they can give us extra channels and a higher speed internet for "only $4 month more for the next 6 months", but $4 is $4--and who knows how much it would increase 6 months from now....I said, "no thanks". Don't want those movie channels, anyways (too much Cinemaxporn with teenagers in the house, not to mention 3rd shifter Hubby who stays up all night on weekends watching tv! I'm mean, aren't I?? ) besides, our 20 year old non-cable-ready tv probably wouldn't accept it anyways (it still works great, why replace it till it dies?)Tenmm, tv and internet for $65???? Geez, we have "expanded basic" (no movie channels just 2-70, HistoryChannel, Discovery, etc.) and the lowest speed internet and it's $80 month. You are lucky!!!My rantI saw another newscast about Natalie Holloway. They are draining a lake in attempt to find her body. I pray she is found, although I don't think she'll be found alive. How sad. But how many missing kids don't get the press coverage they deserve?? It seems like only the "wealthy, attractive white females" get the attention lately--think Elizabeth Smart, Laci Peterson (ok, there was a baby involved, that deserved press attention!) the Runaway Bride (pulleasse)....How many "economically disavantaged" kids or kids of color are missing? How many boys? Why don't we hear about them? I know they are out there. They are someone's babies, they have parents that are just as worried as the parents whose children get media coverage, probably more worried because their plights aren't getting the coverage they deserve. Just because a parent isn't rich or white, doesn't mean they want their babies back safe and sound--it breaks my heart. Parents are parents, their children are the most important things in their lives. My heart breaks for any parent who doesn't know where their Miracles from God are. Don't these kids deserve national television coverage, too? I'm going to give each of my babies a great big hug now and tell them that I love them....They'll say "ohhhh, mom...." in that irritated tone, but at least I'm fortunate enough to hear them say it.end rantLiz
macmarauder
the so called new is rather pathetic. it isn't eve news anymore, it's more like a video list of what's popular to show cause the other tv stations are showing it. there is no news coverage anymore. to much of it makes me wander "why is this news?" good rant blim and btw i have 4meg dsl with hacked package size (that means i changed their code to allow larger chunks and more chunks of data to pass through the dsl line)
blim
Naughty Macmarauder, naughty!! Hey, I thought you were reformed?? But on the inside, I'm thinking, "geez I wish I knew how to do that...." And no, don't tell me how, you know I'll never understand it And you're right, the news goes about as fast as a soap opera. If you tune in once a week, you're "on top of it". They're running out of material.....why don't they say, "nothing interesting happened today", it would be a relief!! But I suppose they won't make any money on commercials, would they?? Liz
bozodog
Blim, I have the same TV package as you. But it's only $89 a month for the 3meg. They pulled a fast one when they introduced the 3meg. I had 1meg before that and was very pleased with the speed. Suddenly they are advertizing 3meg all over. Dang, I didn't need it, I was happy with 1. All of a sudden I'm falling asleep waiting for d/l's. (?) Seems the b4st4rds dropped the 1meg service to 385k! SO i'm paying the same for 66% less and could not even get the "new customer" discount for the upgrade. (we really had to upgrade with both of us on-line all the time. The Brit maintains our two websites, has to get Windows up-dates for customers, and D/L's a lot of software for testing.)

blim
"Seems the b4st4rds dropped the 1meg service to 385k!" Bozodog, that's just plain theft!! But with Charter, why, oh why am I not surprised..... How can they get away with that??? Oooooh, if that happened to me and if I was a lawyer.....Liz
bozodog
Oh, believe me, Blim. This squeeky wheel sounded off! I even wrote a letter to the manager here. Stupid monoply, all I got back was a form letter full of nothing... I would swich if there was something comparable around here, but DSL don't get it, with having to hook up to a land-line phone again. But the 3meg upgrade ate up the savings I had with Vonage VoIP. macmarauder
and now it's time for Ranting Hour with Grandpa Dellcompuuters these days are too fast, in my day we had to go in the cellar of the house and flip a huge switch and then wait 10min for it to warm up. children are just spoiled by these compuuters of today. they need to learn patience and humility from having from having to type lines of code to open a file. which brings me to another thing. PANTS! pants have too many pockets. with all of these pockets kids feel the need to fill them with lots of useless gadgets and electronic nick naks and iPods and such. does a 15 year old really need global positioning or instant messaging or 10,000 songs or video game and movies or even porn at their finger tips. NO! this kids don't need all of that. what they need is spankings, yes, daily spankings to keep them in line. and it don't want to hear any on this nonsense about it them getting too old. i was spanked until i was 26 and i never got out of line. they should be spanked at home, at school, by the babysitter, by the grocer, in the car, on a boat, oooooorrr ZZZZZZZ aaaaa ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.that concludes Ranting Hour with Grandpa Dell

blim
Well, Macmaruader, at least you had the decency to do no harm and the decency to let the folks know there were holes in their....website?program?undies?....wherever the holes live. You're right, hackers nowadays are crooks. Kinda like a technology mafia. And you're supposed to rant here, its the rantroom Oooh, a new rant or poetic justice, don't know which!1. Paper mill in business for over 100 years2. Few months ago homeowners who moved to the area either were suing or sued (don't remember) the paper company because of the smell from their pulp mill. a.First of all, shame on the homeowners, why didn't they check out the neighborhood before buying the house? If they looked around the neighborhood they would have seen it (paper mills are huge factories, hard to miss, piles of sawdust, big sign in front of the factory, etc....) b. Secondly, the real estate agents should have done their jobs and let the buyers know that there was a paper mill in the area, but nooooo, they wanted the commission! c. but again, nooooo, "lets sue 'em"3. Paper mill announced today that they were closing down the pulp mill and over 375 people are losing their jobs.4. Now these whiners are going to have unemployment in their area, their community is losing a large chunk of property taxes (they live on a lake, where taxes are high already!) and the homeowners are going to see their property taxes go up and city services go down. When there is a factory in the area, the city takes care of the area! Not to mention the empty building which will soon become an eyesore...Hope they're happy. bozodog
Jeesch, that is just like here.... The airport wanted to extend service and add another couple 100 feet to the runway. That meant bigger planes and more flights, extending into the nitetime. Opps.... A neighborhood called Milwood, put a stop to the whole thing. No longer runway, no nitetime flights (after 11pm) and Phizer (aka Pharmicia-aka UpJohn) moved their whole sales force to New Jersey and are now moving R&D outta here too. 1000's of high end jobs gone because some middle classed folks paid too much for the pieces of crap, overpriced, too small/old houses wanted it.My problem is/was, the airport was there long before any of them. WTF??[/rant]
macmarauder
few people don't understand or care about the whole community thing anymore. they're just out for themselves. that's why i don't like big cities and if i could live in a small town. but alas i'm stuck here for now.
blim
Small towns are just as bad. In my town, the city leaders are "determined" not to see the town grow, with exception of allowing condo developers in (ugh). Which on one hand is good, because it will always be a small town, but on the other hand, taxes are high (no manufacturers) most drive 30 minutes or more to work, no real restaurants (a pizza place) and Walmart is a day trip because it's so far away. And when we bought a house here, folks warned me about the schools not being kind to "outsider" kids. I was pregnant at the time and figured if I started the kids in kindergarten, they'd be fine. Nooo, they are only "first generation kids", the kids who got all the "perks" had families who lived in the town for a hundred years (a great example is Daughter was the only one to meet the requirements of the Drama Award. They gave the award to a singer who's grandfather is on the school board).. Now if their kids attend that school, they'd be part of the "good ol' boys club"....but with their experience in middle and high school, I betcha they won't send their kids to that school!Shoot, the only reason I know so many people in this town is because I was involved in the schools and rang register at a grocery store. A lot of folks say they live here 20 years and are still considered outsiders. Kinda spooky.Me, I'd be back to Chicago if I could! Besides, I miss White Castle Sliders.....Liz
bozodog
00OOooooo! Sliders... dang! sure miss them from the Detroit area. We can buy them here in the frozen food section, but it ain't the same as smelling the re-hydrated onions and grease just cookin'. (with a few beers in ya at 2am..)I'd never go back to Dearborn/Detroit. In fact Kazoo has gotten too big for me. But I'm gonna live in the country, not in a small town. robroy
The way things are growing around here in ten years we will be another suburb in the Washington DC (77 miles away) Baltimore (90 miles away) Metro area. Have a bunch of people who want to bitch about the growth. I tell them, if you don't want the growth then you have to buy the farms as they get sold. that is the only way to stop the developers building. Our airport just got a runway extension, advantage of sharing the runway with the Air Guard. They are getting new planes that need the extra room. It was already big enough for Air Force One to do touch and goes (land and take off again in an emergency situation) and that is a 747. The new planes coming are C5's military transport planes. They need lots of roomC5It was bad before but now new houses in the flight path have to have special soundproofing, including windows and doors built in. More work for me to do, not that I need it. I have 6 weeks worth sitting on my desk right now
bozodog
that's one big plane. Work? At my job we are never behind, nor are we ever ahead... the mail just keeps coming and going...
bozodog
[bIG RANT] What is the problem with TV channels lately? Every dang channel has more pop-ups then a crapwared computer. It all started with the little logo bug in the corner, and now it's rampant all ove the screen. Damn, damn, adverts everywhere! Aaaargggg! Mac! Invent a little black box to stop iiiiiiittttttt!!!!!!!!!!!!! (please?) [/bIG RANT]
blim
Bozodog, do you ever find the little bug hiding something you want to see and find yourself moving to try to look around it?? By the way, I agree, I hate those things! Liz
bozodog
sure do Blim. It's so irritating. It also used to ruin the early big screen TVs by burning in, if you're like me and leave a news channel on most of the time. First it was junk mail, the phone sales, and now right in our living rooms on top of our show of choice. At least we can get rid of it on our computers.
blim
...More like "Sweet Revenge". I'm sorry, I'm very, very SORRY if I offend anyone, but being a "do it yourselfer", sigh, I personally just can't stand Martha Stewart --she just plain irritates me ("to make a fall garland, go to the greenhouse and buy fall leaves"--pullllleeassee!!! Either gather them yourself or buy silk if your area doesn't generate fall colors--real leaves turn brown in a few days anyways, unless you wax them and what a lot of bother--and if you live in a "color tour area" like she does, just look out the darned window!!!!....I'd be laughed out of our local greenhouse for even asking for leaves...)I realize she was probably "made an example of" with her stock cheating, (*cough-she got caught-cough*) but when under house arrest and a "media magnet", don't cheat on the terms of house arrest!!! Geez, how dumb can someone be?!???linkyLiz
