Can't access https sites

Recommended Posts

Well I am compeltely stumped with my laptop. It all started about two weeks ago when I couldn't connect to my school email address. I noticed it required a secure connection and I then realized I couldn't access any https sites. I took it to the tech support at my school and they told me to re install Windows, and I can't afford to do that. Its a Toshiba running Windows 7 HP 64bit. I used to be able to connect just fine, and it just randomly stopped connecting one day. I can connect fine from other computers, just not mine. Any help is really appreciated.

Hey Monsterenergy - whats up??

I shudder to say this, but has this laptop been attcked by Malware or a virus or something that would have possibly stopped https:// connections? Malware can be tricky as heck sometimes, and we BOTH know that strange things can happen. It is entirely possible that something may have gotten in there and changed something without your knowledge.

I would scan this thing using the tools in your toolbox and see if anything is detected - perhaps something is hiding and you do not know it........Perhaps a second set of eyes on BT's Malware Removal Team can see something you don't.

Good Luck!!

Brian

Can you access secure sites with another browser?

Can you access secure sites from another user account?

- I would try resetting IE to factory defaults..

- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813444 (these fixes apply to vista, which may work the same with 7)

- If you have restore points that go 2 weeks back, I would try system restore.

You said you "can't afford" a reload. Do you mean it is impractical with all the stuff you have on it?

Hey Brian,

Not much man, just been tryin to keep up with school. I did a few quick scans for malware, but haven't had the time to go in delpth with them yet. I think I might have to though.

Hey Pete_C,

I tried your advice along with the M$ article with no luck.

Hey shanenin,

Unfortunately the answer is no to both of your questions. I also have tried your other suggestions. Yes, that is exactly what I mean when I say I can't afford to reinstall Windows.

Double check the clock. Is the time setting valid? You have the correct time zone, correct day and time?

Many secure sites will reject you if your settings vary significantly from the IP they receive assuming you are using a proxy.

By the way, you are not using a proxy are you?
