JDoors
Nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize two weeks after he took the oath of office. Pretty good for someone whose record of "Present" votes implies he didn't accomplish much.

I humbly accept on behalf of all the little people. Here is my nomination for next years award = Off-color remark caught by House mic = "Yet another member of Congress has been tripped up by an open microphone, suggesting on the House floor where a colleague who disagreed with him should "stick" his viewpoint."BTW; I might not be around here for a few days because I am going to Detroit tomorrow and claim that I am a homeless person who has been a resident of the city for 6 months, although there are no records of that, since I have been living under a bridge, and get my $3,500.00 share of Obama's stash that they are passing out.Note: Someone who will NOT get next year's peace award = } Man arrested after allegedly throwing girlfriend's possessions in riverhttp://www.johnsoncitypress.com/News/article.php?ID=71620 = "When a deputy responded to a domestic violence call at the residence, he found Sheila Bowers to be very upset, crying and with her clothes soaking wet. She said Hoss had taken her clothes, toiletries, sheets and linens, all pots and pans, dishes and silverware, all of her personal photographs – including those of her children – and other personal items from her drawers, boxed them up and threw them in the river, which runs right behind their residence. Among those items were her diplomas from nursing school and her certification license.". Edited October 9, 2009 by sultan_emerr

jcl
Awesome! Well deserved Mr. President!But... but... he hasn't done anything!sudden left turnFun discussion at the Volokh Conspiracy about the constitutionality of the Obama accepting the prize.Obama seems to have angered the gods of obscure constitutional provisions. First there was the possible Emoluments Clause violation and now a possible Title of Nobility Clause violation. How many non-lawyers even know that those clauses exist?
Matt
I was aware of the Nobility Clause... it was brought to my attention when Rudy Giuliani was running for President.
bozodog
Someone is turning in his grave. From Alfred Nobel's will, the Peace Prize should be awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."I guess he could use the cash... Viagra and pornography are not staples on the government's food stamp list. But authorities say a Detroit liquor store supplied them during a series of illegal deals.Federal prosecutors filed fraud charges this week against three people who worked at Jefferson's Liquor Palace. The alleged scheme worked this way: Food stamp recipients would get cash from the store in exchange for swiping larger amounts off their electronic cards. The store would then be reimbursed by the U.S. Agriculture Department. And in some transactions, the government says the store provided informants Viagra, liquor and porn in exchange for swiping about $2,000 off food stamp cards. The government says fraud at the store topped $130,000 over 2 1/2 years. The store is closed.

ISTR that Merkel sounded a bit unhappy toward the end of the G-20 too.Edit: And Honduras. Oh God, Honduras....
irregularjoe
How can Obama win the Nobel prize? And if that isn't bad enough he's also a feriner. I hear he was born in that heathen land of Hawaii. It's also a slap in the face to dubya bush. bush is much more eligible for the prize. After all he DIDN'T bomb Iran, Mexico, or Massachusetts! That took a lot of restraint. Just think how good it would have been for Halliburtan and the economy if he did! We could have had five wars going on now. People wouldn't be so preoccupied with health care reform, global warming, and the biggest depression since 1929 if they had more important things to worry about. Like total annihilation. sethook
Lets not forget to give a shout out to the nominating committee who saw the potential in Obama only two weeks after his inauguration. Matt
The links posted in this forum always amuse me Anyway... even I don't think Obama should have won the prize. Maybe in a couple years though, he may have been more deserving. He has great plans, they just haven't happened yet. What actually shocked me the most was Bill O'Reilly's reaction. I was expecting him to be much more critical of the situation."Having a US President honored with a peace prize is good for the country.""President Obama was honored today, and deserved or not, the world is hearing 'America' and 'peace' in the same sentence. That's good."http://www.foxnews.com/video2/video08.html...nion/index.html

sultan_emerr
There's a big difference between peace thru victory, and peace by surrender. France had "peace" under the Vichy regime, Norway had "peace" under Vidkun Quisling, etc, etc, etc.

That's good." ...Wow. I'm not sure what happened there. Was he obviously on drugs? It MAY be good for the international image of the country, but if you read international sources they are just as perplexed as anyone.I like how the AP "spun" their coverage in one story. They seemed all, "this, but that, see how fair and balanced we can be," and then added a notation that, golly, it's a myth that the prize was supposed to be for actual accomplishments, it's also awarded to encourage people to work toward peace. Umm, that's not quite what Alfred Nobel had in mind as his will states, "[The Peace Prize should be awarded] to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."Arguably, what Obama "promised" on the campaign trail could squeeze into that definition but, ... NO OTHER NOMINEE did more or better work than Obama under those same criteria?I wasn't swayed by the naysayers' argument that Obama won largely because "He isn't George Bush," but I'm beginning to think that maybe the commitee was thinking, "OMG, GB was SO bad, Obama's PROMISES are an accomplishment of such significance we simply MUST reward him this prize!" One outstanding example is Aung San Suu Kyi.

One outstanding example is Aung San Suu Kyi.Guess I'd have to see if the AP phrased it, as I thought when I was reading the article, to describe the original intent of the prize, or, as your example and many others show, how it is being used, regardless of the original intent. If the latter I'll give 'em a break.
