Network Printer

I run win xp sp3

You see at my office, we have a printer, that we need to share to the network, we have 5 pc's, 2 desktop and 3 laptops, I created a network so we can share the printer, the network seems to be working fine because this laptop, can find the printer looking through the network name, when I go to control panel, fax and printers, add printer, I select browse for printer, and I'm able to see the printer under the network name...

But the other 2 laptops can't see it, I've tried everything that I think it will work but it doesn't...

Can anyone give me any ideas please?

When it comes to sharing a printer over a network it is best and simplest to just get a network ready printer.

I fought for years configuring File and print sharing and usb sharing devices and even print server adapters and when HP started selling true network ready printers (and PSCs ) I was overwhelmed at the simplicity.

If you are not willing to replace the printer with one designed to do what you want; the next best thing is to set it up with a print server

If all you need is inkjet the prices are so low you might as well replace it.

I saw a network ready HP (office jet ?) all in one at Sam's club for $69 last week.

I have been using an HP Photosmart All in one (print scan copy fax) network ready at work for several years now; no problems and just to simple to set up.

Connect printer to router with ethernet cable

Run install and config software CD on each PC , specify the network connection (they can also be connected USB) and follow the prompts. Power on the printer when told to , then when it finishes, shut off printer ; power on next computer and install software.

Connect the PSC to a phone line and configure the fax.

You now can scan from the printer and select the computer to send the scan to; or launch the scanner from the comptuer end. You can make a fax on the computer and have the PSC send it, have it recieve faxes and convert to PDF and send on to a specified computer, and print from any computer to the PSC.

Since I do not know the version of your printer and have little experience with printers themselves... I do have a suggestion however that refers to networks, and the problem you are having sounds very similar to a problem I had years ago in regards to IPX Transport Protocols.

My suggestion is to go to your network places > View Network connections > Right Click Local Area Connection > Properties > Click the "Install" button, find NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS, under the Protocol Section and install them on each system.

Once installed it should be safe to disable "NWLink NetBIOS" ( unless you are using novell ) but keep the "NWLINK IPX/SPX" enabled

Also: I have noted that various products have issue with Microsoft's TCP/IP Version 6. In most cases it is safe to disable this protocol ( located in the same place ).

A reboot may be required for each system. I hope it helps!

Edit: Oh just to be sure, do NOT disable Internet Protocol TCP/IP, you should either have just that, or both Version 6 and the original protocol listed. If you can only see one TCP/IP protocol then leave it be~ But be sure to check on each system.

i am using the hp photos smart 5060 printer.

no , i did not try to connect the ping the laptops to the computers.

i installed the drivers

but i am using the internet in both the laptops.

i will try to ping the laptops to the other laptops.

Okay so this is not a network ready printer.

It is a USB printer connected to one computer and shared over the network.

First, note that the computer it is hooked up to must be on and networked in order for other computers to print to it.

Second note that you need to install the drivers on the other machines; although the cd will generally not detect the printer since it was not designed to do so.

Either just download the drivers alone or do the setup to add a networked printer and if the generic printer drivers in XP / Vista do not include it then you put in the cd and search for the drivers.
