Peaches
Had a similar situation after updates on my main computer and it was a matter of unchecking MUTE ... I can now listen to music. However, on my old computer I moved my set a couple of feet over and sound disappeared .. checked all wires, etc. and all is cool. Sound is not muted. Maybe that is coincidence and can be as a result of updates ???- My drivers do need updating but they want me to pay .. free is not always free. Shall follow this thread and hope someone comes up with a solution.
velda
Pete, I've done everything you've suggested. Still no audio device, but not showing any errors. So I updated the driver and rebootedin C-Media AC97 audio device properties it's showing "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"?Thank you so much for your valuable time
Pete_C
Code 10 tends to mean you have an incompatible, outdated, or corrupted device driver. My advice would be to go to your computer manufacturers website and download the driver pack from them; the motherboard, and sound card drivers.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123Code 10If the device has a FailReasonString value in its hardware key, that string is displayed as the error message. The driver or enumerator puts this registry string value there. If there is no FailReasonString in the hardware key, you receive the following error message:This device cannot start. (Code 10)Recommended resolutionsHere are some things that you can try to resolve this problem.Update the driverIn the device Properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver to start the Hardware Update Wizard. Follow the instructions to update the driver. You may be prompted to provide the path of the driver. Windows may have the driver built-in, or may still have the driver files installed from the last time that you set up the device. If you are asked for the driver and you do not have it, you can try to download the latest driver from the hardware vendor’s Web site.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943104/I see you have an SPM Micro, Inc.Model 2004Intel ® 4 CPU 2.50GHz2.50GHz, 352MB of RamDid any one ask you to run everest home or SIW or belarc advisor (try that first) to see if it can verify your sound card info and provide motherboard ID? http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/forum...6-no-sound.htmlHaving trouble finding SPM Micro, maybe they went under or were bought up.http://www.spmmicro.com/http://www.bobloblaw.com/clients/spm.htmlSPM Micro is a leading PC manufacturer located in Anjou, Quebec. They are one of the few companies in their industry that offers custom branded PC's, notebooks and servers for the reseller market. Their primery market has been in Quebec but were in a position to expand into the rest of Canada in early 2003.Ah, they got bought by Prosys-Tec Computers in 2005But the too appear gonehttp://www.prosys.ca/http://canadatech.info/modules/news/index....mp;storyid=2088Prosys-Tech Corporation (TSX-V:POZ), disclosed today that the management of its subsidiary, Prosys-Tec Computers Inc., has filed a Notice of Intention pursuant to Chapter 50.4 of the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, dated September 24, 2008.So the only remaining thing to do to get drivers will probably be using belarc advisor , siw, or everest to identify your motherboard and sound card and hope they do not have "blessed" (modified) firmware. Pete_C
Well that was nothing new.The serial number is unimportant. What I am looking for is a motherboard maker and model like Biostar M6VLRThen we could get the correct drivers as in this instancehttp://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en-us/mb/driver.php?S_ID=155The system model and main circuit board sections in the belarc report should helpIs that all it says is SPM Micro?Good idea to save a copy of your belarc report or print it since it has some useful info like license keys.Okay, lets try a different toolSIWhttp://www.gtopala.com/siw-diff.htmlDownload the freeware version for home useRun it and go to hardware => motherboard Copy the model, chipset, chipset modelMay need to run Everest homehttp://majorgeeks.com/download4181.htmlInstall it and run and go to motherboard => motherboard Look on the right pane for motherboard nameLook in devices => physical devices (not windows devices)What we need to find out is who makes the chipset that is controlling the C-Media AC 97 controller and install their drivers; not cmedia's

velda
I had my son disable the Realtek onboard (I won't touch the bios )I followed the instructions for installing my Retail Plus Sound card (by C-Media)It installed and said the device is working properly but it still doesn't show in Control Panel> Sounds and Audio Devices -- It shows in Control Panel > System > Device Manager as working with no errorsI tried updating the driver thru the "update driver" option, it updated and I rebooted. It's still not showing....when choosing properties in the device manager, it's showing as working. CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device Edited May 10, 2009 by velda
velda
Control Panel > Sounds and audio devices> hardware -- when I click on the sound card from the list, it won't give me the option to APPLY , if that matters.
