dsell
Problem: desktop in display properties suddenly began to take too much time to load. tj416
Hi dsell,I noticed you have Ad-watch enabled. You should temporarily disable it as it could interfere while fixing items in Hijack This!. To disable ad-watch:1. Right-click on its icon in the taskbar.2. Select Unload Ad-watch.3.Then, go to Ad-Watch Settings and uncheck Load Ad-Watch on Windows start up.I also noticed that you are running Microsoft Anti-Spyware and you should also temporarily disable it because it may also interfere while fixing items. To disable Microsoft Anti-Spyware:1. Right click on its icon in the taskbar.2.Click Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware. Then , open Hijack This!, run a scan and check these items:The following item is a restriction to your computer. If you did not set this entry with Spybot or another protection program, or if your administrator did not set it, then check this item .O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel presentNow please close all windows and browsers, except HijackThis, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking on Fix Checked. Then, reboot and post a new log in this thread. Also in your reply, post your computer specifications (RAM, HD Space etc.). Edited February 4, 2005 by tj416

tj416
Your log looks clean.I moved this topic because the problem isn't malware related anymore. When did this problem start happening? What did you install before the problem started? Is this the only thing that is taking a while to load? How long is it taking? Do you have the latest drivers for your graphics card installed?TJ Edited February 5, 2005 by tj416
dsell
The problem occured when another user downloaded a jpeg of Atlantis cockpit and set it as wallpaper using display properties. When I attempted to revert it back to the neutral gray or black that I use with photoediting the problem was apparent. It had been working normally two days before. No programs had been added or downloaded between times. What made me think of some malware lurking in a data file somewhere was the fact that the problem was not corrected by restoring to a tested disk image of the C: drive. Video drivers are current using the latest signed drivers. It also hangs (or takes a long time to load ) when clicking windows xp theme. The other themes (windows classics, my favorite etc) load normally.I went to C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper but none of the excess images were listed.I attempted to redirect the target and went to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windodws\CurrentVersion, and changed the value on WallPaperDir from %SystemRoot%\Web\Wallpaper to E:\WallpaperPics which is a small file I created with just two pictures in it. This had no effect. Please note that I am pretty much a beginner at registry editing.I can work around the problem by opening desktop properties, selecting themes and opening an empty desktop, which I had saved as a favorite theme. I can then create a background or wallpaper image from a saved picture opened with Irfanview. I would like to understand what happened or what is happening. Thanks for any help you can offer. Besttechie
Hi,I think the problem is one of the following three:1. The driver is corrupt2. The graphics card is dying3. The monitor is dyingMight want to try new drivers? What kind of card do you have make/model?I am thinking it's more likely one of the first two.B
dsell
Hello B,the videocard is a GeForce FX 5200 (MSI MS-StarForce Ge Force Fx 5200).I changed monitors and updated drivers to nvidia ver 6.6.93. This did not correct the problem. Desktop properties desktop tab stills populates with over 5000 images but now the list loads in 93 sec instead of 10 plus minutes. The browse function again works.I do not have a known good videocard to troubleshoot with.I appreciate your help.Dave
