Trouble Extracting Pci.sys From Xpsp3 Cd

Recommended Posts

expand e:\i386\pci.sy_ c:\WINDOWS\system32\driver

is what I used in the recovery console.

I get

access denied.

I mapped the drive so I know it is the correct CD rom drive any insite would help.

This person is a writer and would like to get her latest book off before reformating. (yes she has copies but the ready for print edit was on the HDD when the pci.sys corrupted.

XP Home SP3

Athlon XP 2000

Did you check for a bad stick of RAM before attempting this?

I think you need to alter how you typed the expand command.

For Win2K http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319136

Type map and press Enter.

Type expand e:\i386\pci.sy_ c:\windows\system32\drivers /y and press Enter.

Remember the space between pci.sy_ and c:\windows

expand e:\i386\pci.sy_ c:\windows\system32\drivers /y is exactly what I did (i just left out the /y when I typed here) perhaps I will pull a stick of ram and try them separatly

Have you tried to retrieve the files with a live Linux CD or Ultimate Boot CD and transfer them to a thumb drive or burn them to CD? I wouldn't trust a repair install 100%. Also on the expand command did you type driver or drivers before the /y ?

yes I typed /y and I typed drivers

Good Idea about the ultimate boot cd THX

Try expanding it somewhere else to see if it is the source or destination that is the problem.

If it works elsewhere, try copying it to where you need.

Not sure I would have ever thought of that.

If I can expand to a different location then the destination is bad?

would running Scandisk from CMD Prompt help if say there are errors preventing the destination from receiving?

We have decided to pull the HDDs and use a USB adaptor to retrieve personal info to har new computer.

She bought. I was wondering if Cyberpower put an admin password on before they shipped.

Her new PC is coming from there also and it would be nice to know if they have.

Problem solved I changes the position of the HDDs on the ribbon cable and the expand worked fine I assume that it had confussed the locations s the expand could not continue all fixed now thanks to all.
