Honda_Boy
I had to recently reinstall XP on my main rig for various reasons and one thing I need to install is a firewall but I am NOT going through the hell that is COMODO again. I swear COMODO is borderline retarded. It can't EVER remember the rules I set for my programs. I used to use Kerio before it's name was changed to Sunbelt Personal Firewall on my old rig and loved it but my current rig does not like the new version apparently. So any suggestions on a good free firewall? I may even stick a crowbar in my wallet and but a decent one if the recommendations are enough to convince me.Thanks for any help!* Also would like a suggestion on one Vista x64 compatible since this rig will eventually switch (I have it but my Audigy don't like it so I'm waiting for an X-Fi). I run it on all of my boxen; works great. http://www.eset.com/smartsecurity/Good luck!Tim
Pete_C
Remember; Sygate has not been updated or maintained since it was bought by Symantec / Norton. It is basically unsupported and unpatched and has many known exploits and holes. It is far better to go with a current supported firewall including the one that comes with windows than to be hiding behind a false sense of security running an outdated unpatched application.Personally, if you have a router then I think that for most users the windows firewall offers adequate control and security. If you want a more advanced control then yes there are several free firewalls including Comodo, Zone Alarm, http://www.zonealarm.com/http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/http://www.pctools.com/firewall/http://www.iopus.com/guides/free-firewall.htmfor comparisons

Honda_Boy
Man, how is COMODO at the top of that list. I hated it. It would not shut up. Constantly bringing up warnings anytime I opened any program that used the internet and never could remember what I said to allow. I tried Zone Alarm once too and didn't like it either but I may try again. I think I'll give that PC Tools one a shot since it's a MajorGeeks editor pick.

rhema7
Comodo is aggravating in the learning stages if you have it in learning mode, but i still contend that it is one of the better ones out there. Mine has been perking for years now with only minor tweets after updates. I suggest you turn the security level to custom policy mode instead of Training mode. With your level of expertise training mode can be foregone.
Honda_Boy
I decided to give COMODO one more shot and if it drives me insane again, it's frickin gone. I turned the Component Monitor from Learning to just On so hopefully it won't be such a PITA again.
