whoknew
Make sure that the CMOS battery is in the system and make sure it is not dead. If that does not work insure that all the cables and processor are touching the connectors.
martymas
yes i had a feeling it may be the battery when i insatlled windows it was remninding me to reset the time and the datethankls you could be right ile try that thanks marty
martymas
ok i bought a new battery but i still get the checksun errorthe message says defaults are loadedpress f1 or delete to go to the giosbut nothing happens ime not that experienced with checksun i see in the google bot aads a fix for checksun but ime using my compt to read the board how do i transfer the fix to the other comptthanks marty
TheTerrorist_75
After replacing the battery you need to enter the Bios settings and change the date and time plus set the hard drive to auto detect. If the error is Bad Checksum Image you could have bad or incompatible memory or a corrupt User32.dll. Are you upgrading from Win98 or ME to WinXP? On that old of a motherboard the Bios may not be compatible with WinXP.Never just blindly install a fix from an advertisement.
martymas
hi TTprior to me getting it the syshad winxppro installedand was in use for some monthsthe young man had it so full of spyware virus through playing on line gamesthat the sys went staticand he couldnt get into any programswhen i got it i tried to go to the bios to set options but it wont let me in it just says checksun error i installed anew battery as it was saying the time and date was wrong you may be right about the memory sticks as one of the sticks was bloody hot so i removed it and inserted anotherbut i still cant get to that bioswould a virus take the sys over so i cannot access it the operating sys has been removed would a boot sector virus stop me from accessing itthanks marty
TheTerrorist_75
Try booting KillDisk or Dban from a floppy and wipe the drive completely then format it. It oucld be that the motherboard has gone bad if the memory stick overheated. Some of those old motherboards are real fussy about what memory is used also.

Pete_C
Rough explanation of the checksum for those who never heard of it before. While not precise, it gives you the idea of what is going on.The bios has a bunch of data, ones and zeros . Well it keeps a record of how many ones, how many zeros, how many bits and bytes total of data. This is the "Checksum" . It saves that data once you configure the bios and "save settings and exit" and checks each time you boot to make sure they match. If the battery goes dead then all the values are forgotten and the count set to zero so the numbers do not match. Then you get a checksum error (as you would also if something corrupted your bios). If you continue to get this error after replacing the battery; double check that the clear cmos jumper on the motherboard is not in the clear position (used to clear the cmos settings or reset them without having to go through removing the battery and waiting for the memory on the bios cmos chip to discharge). If it is in the correct position, you probably have a bad bios chip or bad motherboard.Once you replace the battery , the simple option is to boot to bios, choose to load optimal defaults and save settings and exit. This will generally get the system working but there are often a few items which you may need to adjust. For example, Win98 and ME like to have the bios set to Plug and Play OS , where the bios assigns IRQ etc for the devices and windows just copies the values. This is because in these OS the values are standardized and generally "non shared" especially when it comes to things lime memory assignments.Win XP and Vista prefer to have it set to "Non Plug and Play OS" . This is because their memory managers and device managers operate differently. They let each device and each application think that it has a full 4GB of Memory addresses all to itself. Then it remaps these virtual memory addresses to real ones. Thus it is possible for IRQs and I/O addresses to show as "shared" without any real problems most of the time. If things were "forced" to use bios settings it could cause problems.Boot sector viruses load after the bios; when the hard drive boot sector is accessed. The easiest method of removing one of them is to remove the drive in question from the boot que in the bios and then use a drive wipe like dban to nuke the drive by writing random numbers to the whole thing before it is even accessed. Then of course it is important to run a full partition and format with checkdisk to ensure that the drives bad sectors are properly marked before you try to install things.Remember, it is best to totally repartition the drive and then check the drive integrity before you format. If you have a failed install, best to check the error out , and then to format and reinstall. Note that with XP you probably will need to repartition since the installer will put an entry in the boot.ini file so that it will attempt to resume if you try to reinstall.Things to check are again bios settings (make sure they are actually correct for the hardware and OS) and the cabling (loose or damaged hard drive or cdrom cable) and cdrom laser lens (dusty) as well as RAM (just use one stick as long as it meets the installers minimum requirements).
