blim
Windows98Se? I had Windows98 on my Possessed Gateway. DO try what Marty suggested with msconfig as I know that worked on the Possessed Gateway. There is a timing thing with pressing F8 that I never could figure out.....Marty's way is MUCH more reliable.Start/Run/type in msconfig (short for Microsoft Configuration, I think--at any rate, knowing that is easier to remember msconfig)Once there, on the right hand side if I remember right, is "startup options" Click that and choose "restart in safe mode", or something like that--pretty foolproof. When you restart the computer, it *should* start right up in safe mode. When you're ready to go back to regular mode, do the same process, Start/run/msconfig and choose regular mode. Computer *should* start up normally. I had to do this a couple times on the Gateway and it isn't scary at all.Liz Edited January 10, 2008 by blim

m12345
I came across this problem on a friend's PC with USB keyboard that would not accept the f8 to get into Safe Mode.I plugged in a PS2 keyboard and BINGO -- I'm there.Dumb fix but it worked.
Pete_C
I always keep old PS2 keyboards around for just that purpose; in fact I still use them on all my machines. But it is a good idea in troubleshooting to have one in case you need it to boot to bios .
