A few people have talked about ,,if you have / use StyleXP to change your boot screen ,,or use "bootskin " ,,you need to diable them,, before installing SP2 ??

I know 'bootskin" just places a boot screen over the top of your XP one .

Any feed back ladies and guys ??

The one I had Style XP on I had to boot the backup line in the boot.ini file If you don't when you try and do the upgrade you will get an Error Code: 8007F0CC which means SP-2 does not like the Style XP boot screen. Also after you upgrade you have to do your boot screen over again as SP-2 rewrites the boot.ini file. Also make sure you have the newest version of Style XP which I think is v2.13.......Other than that it went fine for me......HAHAHAHAHAHA.....

Umm, I know this isn’t related but I downloaded a nice boot screen and want to know how can I get rid of that annoying black screen with the two options which say “Start Windows Professional†or “Start Windows Boot Screenâ€. (I have StyleXP because that’s how I installed the boot screen). :P

THX FOR THE HELP IN ADVANCE

In general, I disable everything I can before doing a major update like SP2.

AV off, firewalls off, desktop enhancements, mimimal startups.

----------------------------------------------------

X-Cannon: While this won't eliminate it, it will reduce it to a "blink".

Start, Run, msconfig.

(Yes folks, it's good for something).

Click the BOOT.INI tab.

Change the timeout to (say) 2 seconds.

You can also choose which boot style should be the default.

Highlight the one you want and click Set as Default.

(The first one in the list is the default).

Click Apply.

Click OK.

Now when you boot that black screen will only be there briefly, but you'll still have time to make a selection if you want to.

OMG the computer with the bootscreen has no msconfig I typed in msconfig when I clicked Start than Run. It works on my other computer but not the good one the message says "Windows cannot find 'msconfig'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To serach for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search". And there is only one option "OK", what is going on????:angry:

Well, that is a bit of a mystery!

I was going to be a wiseguy and tell you to check your spelling.

Then try a search for msconfig (expecting you'd find it moved somewhere).

I thought it would be in C:\Windows\system32.

I did a search on my system figuring I'd locate a backup copy for you.

(There might be a copy in your C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder).

But there was no C:\Windows\system32\msconfig.exe!!!

Maybe with SP2 it's been moved or put in a DLL somewhere.

A new challenge from our friends out west.

Anyhow, back to BOOT.INI.

There's another way to get at it.

Right-click My Computer and select Properties.

Click the Advanced tab.

Under "Startup and Recovery" click Settings.

You can adjust the timeout value from here if that's all you want to do.

Otherwise, click Edit.

That will open BOOT.INI in Notepad (don't tell me that's missing too!).

You can copy/paste the "multi(0)..." lines to get the sequence you want.

Remember, the first one in the list will be the default.

Are you sure that's msconfig.DLL?

Open the C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386, select Details View, and sort by Name.

On my system it's msconfig.EXE. (With msconf.dll above it and msconv97.dll below it, sorted by name).

I wonder if something got renamed/misnamed somehow?

Open C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386.

Right click your msconfig.DLL and select properties.

I'm curious about how its stats compare to my C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\msconfig.exe:

Location:C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

Size: 154 KB (158,208 bytes)

Size on disk: 156 KB (159,744 bytes)

Created: Sunday October 19, 2003 10:26:34 AM

.......

-------------------------------------------------------

If they match stats, here's an experiment you might try.

Right click msconfig.dll and select Copy.

Right click the Desktop and select Paste (not Paste Shortcut).

Rename the Desktop copy to msconfig.EXE.

Double-click it and see if it really will run.

(Be prepared for a crash).

-------------------------------------------------------

Another experiment if that doesn't work.

Try Start, Run

rundll32 C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\msconfig.dll

(Be prepared for another crash).

-------------------------------------------------------

They dont match here are the numbers Location: C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

size: 64.0 KB (65,536 bytes) size on disk: 64.0 KB (65,536 bytes)

also there is a msconfig when I open it it's the same as if I went to Start, Run and typed in msconfig lol. Don't know why it wont work that way but o well I'm just happy I have it THX YOU GUYS.

P.S. whats the command for all the info about your computer msinfo?? something like that I would like to thank CurlingSteve for alll his help TY bro I appreciate you getting out of your way to help me. I guess I'm the kind of guy u would call a computer illiterate. :P

Those numbers are mighty suspicious!

It's rare for a file, especially a DLL to be exactly a power of 2.

Let me Google a bit...

MSCONFIG.DLL is raising Trojan flags on a Google search.

You might want to do "the scans".

Run your anti-virus.

Run your spyware checker(s).

And if they don't find anything, post a Hijack This log in the HJT forum.

(I'm just starting to learn how to diagnose those or I'd say post it here.

"Certified" HJT people are more likely to see it there)
