Windows Freezes When Uninstalling Drivers

Recommended Posts

Whenever i try to uninstall the the driver for my network card the device manager just freezes and does nothing.

Yes i've tried it in safe mode

yes i've done spyware/virus scans and all that good stuff.

Boot into the Bios and make sure Wake on LAN isn't enabled. If that doesn't work shut the computer off, unplug it then remove the Ethernet card from the computer. Plug the computer back in and start it in Safe Mode. Try removing the drivers then.

Wake on lan is off and the nic card is integrated

You could disable nic in the bios, that is like removing it, but it will no longer show up in the device manager, so I don't know how you would be able to remove the drivers.

Have you tried just installing the new driver (I assume you want to replace/overwrite the old one you're trying to delete) ?

---------

I'm just guessing, but perhaps trying to delete the only driver on the "stack" is causing the hang.

---------

Disconnecting cables (or removing a card for that matter) doesn't uninstall/remove the driver, it just might not load.

---------

How long did you wait to consider it a "freeze"?

---------

(Just a guess) would a "Repair" style reinstall help?
