JDoors
I never signed up as a beta tester for anything. I had to remove Spybot as it was crashing my system. I even tried d/l'ing a new copy -- no good, still crashes my system. Must've been some update they added that no longer works with pre-xp computers.
Matt
If I had a VM, I might be interested, but I don't. Now that I think about it, I don't think I've run Ad-Aware or Spybot in over a year. They were good in their day, but they are only 'ok' against many modern infections. If you get to test it out marty, let us know what you think!
bozodog
I still keep SpyBot, I do like the prompts it gives when installing something. At least I know something won't try to install without my ok. I still believe having a router is the best defense.
TheTerrorist_75
All AdAware or SpyBot found on my PCs were MRUs. I got rid of SpyBot and once a month check with AdAware. Between Panda, Spyware Blaster and CCleaner nothing is ever really loaded on my PC. About once a month I run a HJT scan and compare it to the previous one.

JDoors
... what os are you running? ... I'm still using '98SE. After one update Spybot started acting goofy (freezing for longer and longer periods of time) and eventually crashed. Now it just crashes, I can't run it long enough to update or run a scan (as I said, I even d/l'ed a fresh copy), so it's been uninstalled, never to be seen again. Both Spybot and AdAware have found the occasional surprise (like dialers - I have NO idea how those things get on here since I am a safe-surfer ... or so I thought). I've always turned off scanning for things that were unimportant to me (like MRU's, I'm the only one that uses this computer so I don't care about things like that, and I have software that automatically deletes cookies I don't choose to keep, so I don't need to scan for those either). In other words, if either program shows something: IT'S IMPORTANT. Doesn't happen often, but even once is enough, isn't it?
martymas
this is some ting ive posted for quite along timeyour cookies are the secretafter i got the phone dialer i posted at g4 i think and pete_cposted and said keep scanning with adaware but you need to change youe cookie settingsto prompt and block as dialer plants a pixel on your sys through the cookie and if you have no way of discovering it will track your surfing habits and take over your sysas what happened to me so i changed my cookies to block and prompt and when i get a prompt i block all promptsno matter where it is from and then go back in later and remove the ones i need now i scan with adaware and as some one says all i get nowis urlsbut i trust petes judgmentmarty

It's possible that the CPU is overheating, and the system is shutting down to protect the processor. Are your fans running?Have you cleaned the interior of the case lately?Check to make sure the heatsink on the processor isn't loose. If you don't believe heat can be an issue, check out these threads in the Spybot forums:Spybot causes shut downPC crashes while Spybot is runningSpybot wont runspybot related shutdownspybot shuts down computer while scanning (Solution - loose heat sink)Crashing or Shut Down
