hi team i bought mandrake 10 today for $2.

and when i started to load.it dosent detect my cdrom .now ive used this cdrom for several instaltions and each time it has detected my cdrom .

and worked does this mean i need to get drivers for my cdrom so mandrake 10 can detect it and are they linux compatable.

i used this cdrom to load mandrake 9.1 it detected lycoris .

so im not sure why mandrake 10 hasent found my cd rom .

and if i need to get drivers for this cdrom where do i go for them.

most operating sys detect cd auto.

any ideas thanks

what do you mean by "it dosent detect my cdrom"

did the cdrom not boot, did you install but now see no cdrom

any information would help

sorry for being a bit late with this thread.

i have the first boot from the cd .

and it says trying to detect the asapi cd rom .

which it cant find.

do i need to type a command to do this or does it configure it automaticcally .

the problem with me is i think in terms of windows.

and not of another operating sys.so i hope you guys will bare with me.

sorry if i seem vague

but with linux im not sure how to explain my delema .

ok I think I know what is going on.

you boot the cd adn it startes the cd and says searching for atapi cdrom (or in english not BIOS speek looking for ide cdrom)

are you booing this from a usb cdrom,

if not is this cd rom the master drive on ide channel 2?

does it give you a mandrake boot... in other words does it say

something like

mandrake 10.1 boot a lot of other stuff then

boot:

if not you may have a bad cd. (not drive but bad cd)

if it boots to the boot: options after anouncing mandrake before launching the GUI then you may have two things .. it may be acpi (ACPI - Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) and since your board is a litle old, mandrake may need that turned off. I may be wrong but I think the coammand at the boot:

mandrake no acpi

may fix the problem. .. all mandrake users please respond to make sure I am correct.

Mandrake 10.1 works just fine on my unit with power management turned on and I've got a really old pc a Plll 500 MHZ.

Maybe it's a bad cd?

Can you boot another cd like a Knoppix cd? If so then you know your cd rom drive is working fine.

how ever at this stage it says it cant detect the cd rom.

how ever i just tried it in my p3

and it goes through the process of installing.

so you are right my board in the p2 is probably to old.

i would like to put mandrake on this p3 .

but i also have xppro on it.

and the last time i had mandrake on a dual boot with xp i had al sorts of trouble

my Q if i dual boot xp and mandrake 10.

i have xp already established on the p3.

what sortof specs do i need .

the p3

600cpu.

the other hardware is compatable.

would i need to keep xp on first and install mandrake second or the other way round.it looks as tho putting it on the p2 is out.

once i get mandrake established ile i can learn it .

but i still need xp until that time

dis regard the post i just sent .i printed your reply and went and fired ther p2 .

and when it querried the cdrom i went back and typed mandrake no acpi.

pressed enter and now im starting to install mandrake 10.

my am i happy.

it says the resources are low not sure wgat that means.

my hdd is 4.8.

and ive just installed another 128 of ram which gives me 200mgs of ram.

it may not be reading all of the memory.

would i be able to keep in touch with you linux people on my progress .

and of course ile need your help.

That could also include bus bandwidth. if its a PII system you are limited on howmuch data can go over the bus system. that is not counted in a windows resource but it is in a linux system
