Flatiron - Thanks so much. I'll not use for my mother -- Disappointed to know what I have to look forward to... Was afraid of this.

Terrorist - I missed your reply...think I was writing at the same time. Appreciate it very much. Like I said, I don't actually leave the Defender running, so guess it's okay. Also, I primarily use the Firefox browser to be safer and feel even better about it after what you wrote. Thanks for mentioning Spybot. I'll just stay with the three I'm using after seeing that. nancy

Matt - I really appreciate your time. This clears up the question. Since I only use it to scan, I'll just keep it. [The thing I don't likeabout it is that I've never known if or what it discovers!]

Tuesday's Microsoft Updates
wonderent replied to wonderent's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
Thanks Dave and Terrorist too. I now understand and am now a believer. Hope Liz sees these comments too! nancy -
More appreciation for comments on my update post which led to additional opinions. I was surprised when I read that The Terrorist stays away from Windows Defender. I've used it ever since the last shows of CFH were on G4 and they semi applauded it. I thought I was doing well!!!! [i will admit, however, that I never know what it has done, and as far as I can tell, it has never found anything!!!] I use Adaware and Spysweeper along with Windows Defender and did not download Spybot on this particular computer because about the time I got it [last fall], I read on this board that some were

Is anyone familiar with CareerBuilder.com and Monk-E-Mail? A friend of mine sent me a really, really cute message through this, and told me it was free. [a real monkey's mouth moves to say whatever you have told him to say and is dressed in a way that the sender has chosen.] I know my elderly mother would love receiving one, but I definitely don't want to use any source that could possibly generate spam. This is my only concern. Thanks for anyone's time. nancy

Liz and Marty - appreciate your comments! I'm now safe and sound with new updates. Just to mention. I used to download the mal.. software remover, Liz, until I saw you frown on it so much. Now I don't!!!! nancy -
Tuesday's Microsoft Updates

Terrorist- Thanks so much! I appreciate your telling me all of the safeguards. I kind of knew to do that with programs, but never hit me to do it with the updates! Thanks so much for your time! n -
Just wondering if anyone has heard of any problems with Tuesday's Microsoft updates. Will appreciate your time! Nancy

Thanks, Terrorist, -- that's what I thought but wanted to hear it from someone like you!!!

Hope someone can help me. A friend just got a brand new Dell computer, and it asks her if she would like to activate Windows Media Player 9 series. I know she needs WMP 10, but wasn't sure if she should just ignore the 9 series activation and go straight to Window Update and download WMP 10... ...OR should she activate the WMP 9 before downloading 10. Does anyone know? Sure thank you for your time. nancy

Thanks so very much to all of you! Appreciate the security reminders about emails too. I now have an account and have used it to donate to Stickies...a little program I have used for years after learning about it on Call for Help! nancy

Will appreciate anyone's time... Here and there I have heard of security problems with paypal but don't know if it really affected customers. Can anyone tell me if Paypal is safe to use now? I guess it is still used on ebay, but I don't know anything about ebay other than what it is. I would like to use Paypal to donate to programs that I have used and just wanted to make sure it is still safe. Thanks very much! nancy

Matt -- I can't thank you enough for the thorough answer! This is exactly what I needed to know! Sure appreciate you!

Hope someone can help me...will sure appreciate your time. I have downloaded Audacity in order to be able to split up interviews into different tracks. On the set up before the actual install, it has two options selected by default: * create desktop icon * associate Audacity project files I'm wondering what the second one means [associate...]. I don't want Audacity to jump up when I don't want it or interfere with any other program I use, but I don't want to take the selection away if it would prevent Audacity from working. I feel fine about the program because I have heard it suggested

Just want to thank everyone again for the interesting feedback. Good to know that musicmatch can also be used w/o a subscription. nancy

BT Friends, Last night when I noticed late that there were no replies, I was afraid I had shown disrespect to the board by asking such a frivolous question. This morning, I am so happy to see that not only was it okay, but such great answers [including your wonderful hello, Bearskin]. As always, I continue life as a scardycat, so I won't be traveling to Russia for music, but I definitely appreciate the information. [i could always pass that on to friends of mine who are opposite from me!] I did some looking around on CNET reviews too, and I believe that msn also does not require a subscr

I never thought I would want to download music from one of the sources like napster, yahoo music, msn, etc., but have decided that now it is surely safe. I am wondering which some of you would suggest with the following in mind: 1. I won't be buying that much because I still enjoy buying real albums, so I just want to be able to get songs a la carte here and there...from time to time. In other words, I don't want a source that I have to have a subscription for a certain amount of songs per month..etc.. 2. I do not have an ipod, but do have an iriver H10. I don't want to download straight to

Yes you can download Avast and burn it to CD. When you download it just don't run the file. Burn the .exe to your CD. Don't forget the registering part at the Avast website to get the registration code sent by email. The program is free but needs to be registered. You can use the neighbors email address or yours. If you use yours just write the registration number down so it can be inputted into Avast after it is installed. The registration lasts for 14 months. Good seeing you back around.

Oh, Marty, this is such a wonderful answer. Thank you so much! Can I download the Avast exe file on my computer without it affecting what I have now ...then burn it to a cd and put it on her computer that way? She has dial up, and this would be so much easier if you think it would be safe for me. I guess what I'm asking is....if I went to the avast site to get the program, will it be like when you get any other program -- you download the .exe file and nothing really happens or affects your computer until you run the file to install the program? [Yes! I am the same nancy you knew at CFH

Mark and Marty -- Which A-V free programs would you suggest for 98? That's my concern for her. The newest Norton has "2005 inside for 98 & ME" but have heard from a computer repair person that it is really too much for win98. I don't want to give her more problems. She uses the computer very little. She doesn't have to use the company site...just wants to be able to. I would love to get something figured out for her. Am going to try the history suggestion. Thanks again, nancy

"sometimes if we get an error page for many reasons. the history has to be cleared." Marty, sure appreciate your response. I cleared her temp files but never would have thought to clear history. You've taught me something new. I know how to clear history by going through IE Internet options. Would that be just as good as doing the Run.. regsvr32 urlmon.dll? If so, I would feel more comfortable doing that. Thanks for your time. nancy
