  1. Ok so I'm getting old and lately have noticed that I don't see like I used to.After a few hours on the computer I am getting headaches and my glasses don't seem to work anymore. I am thinking eye strain. So.....could a few of you that have or do use BOTH give me some advice as to whether a flat panel LCD would be easier on my eyes? Not looking for brands or links, just opinions based on your experience. Bear in mind that I am NOT a gamer,so don't factor that in.

I've also posted this on the CFH board but don't expect much from that area.

Thanks in advance for any help.

  2. Personally I am just glad to have the responsibility for those boards off my shoulders.

I think that it is a combination of folks leaving (I still visit occaisionally , but do not spend any where near the time I used to ; I have new boards I frequent now) for greener pastures; those who remain getting tired of constantly being told that the board is going to close and the show be canceled (hey that is enough to fray anyones nerves ) and as mentioned a lack of moderation. I do not say a lack of moderators; but rather the rules they are now under severly restrict their actions. Those who were willing to take a stand, maintain order and maintain a personal relationship with users (so they could ask them to go easy one the guys who have psychological problems or please edit your post so I do not have to etc) have been discharged. They do not want moderators who actually keep the order, rather they want moderators who will be there and do nothing as long as possible and ask the admins if please can they lock or delete a thread.

Well, we will just have to wait and see what the future holds over there.

Pete, glad to hear your take on this. personally,I don't think the CFH boards have a future. And no one seems to want them to just die with dignity, rather than go out with a wimper.

  3. I got my ear pierced 25 years ago when nobody but Willie Nelson and Rock Stars had them. My first tattoo was 20 years ago and everyone I knew was shocked. Now my older brother has his ear pierced and more tattoos than I do. I think everyone should have at least one.

As for what i got....last year it was a drum set (finally,at age 50) and this year it was a full-sized keyboard. Sams club had a trip to Vegas to see Jimmy Buffet with backstage pass, etc, for 5. I think the price was 30K but I talked myself out of that.

I haven't done the golf clubs in the trunk/country station on the radio thing yet and never will. When I get too old to ROCK they can just bury me where I fall.

  4. You are referring to me after I lost my cool with that moron spammer MiStaBIGshOt. That $%&**$## is going to cause harm to someone's computer if he keeps jumping in with replies that are no solution and even more dangerous than inuyasha320. I have repeatedly asked the mods to talk to him. but it hasn't helped. I do resort to harsh language when highly irritated. It has nothing to do with morals. Obviously some people have never worked in the construction trades or been in a barroom if they have never been exposed to that language.

Actually I wasn't referring to you. I agree on the two posters that you mentioned, they don't have a clue.BUT the boards aren't barrooms and they aren't construction sites. I am 51 and My mother is 83 and I can honestly say that I have NEVER heard her use profanity...BUT she can sure get her point across without it.

Forunately,I don't have any children but if I did.... while I would encourage them to seek knowldge on forums,I certainly wouldn't want them exposed to that type of language. But,its really more about language. While profanity is appropriate in certain contexts (as you have mentioned)..in most places, forums included, its just plain RUDE.

No offense to you personally we all lose our tempers from time to time... but my point to begin with wasn't whether profanity is bad or good....it was that the forums are no place for it and didn't use to be. The whole point of having rules is to keep order. And the powers that be at CFH forums are either too lazy or just don't care. (notice I said 'just don't care' I could have said dont give a sh*t but I got the point across, didn't I?)

The most amazing thing to me is that a network that seems to aim their programs to 12-15 year olds would allow such naughty language on their forums.

I guess I'm just old fashioned.I'm old enough that when I was a kid you only heard bad language in pool halls. And Beer joints (now called bars, taverns, pubs, etc)

Rant over. Now back to Bob Hope on the Military Channel.

  5. I've found it very hard not to respond in kind.

I sympathize with the "old guard" people that now give what they get (or have given up completely).

Some folks have been around for quite a while, and work hard to solve a particular problem.

Posters that interject "me too", "Google it", or nonsense to bump their count bother me a lot.

I don't know about the rest of the folks with any kind of Mod privelege, but I prefer to spend my time helping correcting (not policing) posts so they make sense.

I'm looking to solve problems and learn along the way.

I do wish (as Moderator in some forums) I could delete useless posts in a thread.

Along those lines, I'm trying to accumulate a group of "best of" answer threads to common questions along the lines of the "Commonly Recommended.." thread in G4.

How low are they going to let the boards sink before somebody does something? Allowing profanity (and vulgar profanity at that) on a forum that is not only accessible to kids, but frequented by then, just isn't acceptable.PERIOD. I mean, you can say the "F" word all over the place, but I couldn't post 'www.walmartwatch.com because t.w.a.t. is in the middle of it.

  6. I think it's a combination of things--some new kids with "smart mouths"

The new kids not knowing how to handle some of the "Seasoned Helpers" when they may be a little cranky and in need of a happynap (the old timers know to just ignore 'em or try humor)

And the "Seasoned Helpers" who sometimes post when they're a little cranky and in need of a happynap (although sometimes those posts have me laughing my head off!)

A lack of Moderators--there are some who are wonderful, but they have lives, too!

    Liz

It seems to be the 'seasoned helpers' who are the worst.BUT if you check their posts, mostly they just post nothing of value or just a link or two. When it comes the time that an older person who should know better, jumps down the throat of some 15 year old kid for no good reason...then its time for those forums to die. I am just plain disgusted with the whole thing. It used to be a good, happy place where kids could go. NOW,if I had a kid,I would block the site. And as the other poster said, its about upbringing. I am 51 years old and would never say the "F" word in public, let alone on a public forum.

  7. is it just me,or has the CFH forum been taken over by a bunch of mean, foul mouthed idiots? I mean, they post if they have anything to say or not and the language is awful. And,God Forbid a Noob should ask a simple question they jump on him/her like they were idiots?

Maybe they are trying to see how far they can go?

And some of the worst are on these boards too and they know who they are.

I've stayed on to try and offer what help I can but its like swimming in Jello.

  8. Small problem with Windows Media player. When I play regular DVD's everything is fine. When I play DVD's that I have burned, there is no sound. I know the DVd is OK because it plays fine in my DVD player attached to the TV. I am thinking its a codec or setting but according to M$ I have all the latest codecs.Any help would be appreciated.

On a side note, the same DVD's with no sound in WMP play fine with sound when I use VLC player

I already posted this on the CFH board I was wasting my time. Not a single reply in an hour.Hope someone over here can help.

  9. Then wat are you implying? I am inferring the same as screi!

Gas in mexico kills your car...it is dilutted in water from what i hear.

We always cross border ( to DEL RIO TEXAS to fill up )

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Not always, lots of mexico is hot and dry. But last I checked they were still using lead in their gasoline. One tank and you are buying a new Catalytic converter if you ever want to get another emissions inspection sticker. Also , lots of their pumps have the oversize nozzels which require you to punch out the fill hole and then you need a new filler neck to pass a safety inspection.

What all this points out is that after all the BS about forming a Department of Homeland Security to coordinate things and be ready for a major terrorist attack , we just have a bunch of beaurocracy , not a functioning system. If this had been a terrorist dirty bomb or biological attack and it took this long to react we would be in a lot worse position than this. We have leadership more interested in coordinating a photo op (look at how the relief supplies showed up just when President Bush did) than in giving timely relief.

Everyone knows that hurricanes knock out power and thus water supplies.

So even a moron should have known that the day after all those folks in the superdome would be without power and water . Although they may have been able to flush by bringing in buckets of water from outside initially (did anyone even try this or did they just let things clog up when the water cut off) it should have been obvious that there would be a need for immeadiate provisioning.

Yes, I know the National Guard is so severely depleted by Bush's use of them in Iraq, that they cannot serve their original purpose. So there should have been a call out for porta potties ready and waiting to go to affected areas and trucks to service them. Likewise water and soda bottling facilities should have been contacted with a contingency to provide drinking water. Emergency generators should have been standing by ready to roll even if they had to be rented, along with fuel trucks even if they had to be hired .

Again, national guard supplies of emergency food are depleted, so other arrangements for emergency rations should have been ready.

Finally, they should have ordered a pre evacuation of busses , including school busses from potentially affected areas. These should have been standing by inland ready and waiting to roll in and evacuate survivors. Anywhere would have been better than sitting in a flooded disaster area with no food and no water.

Looting should have been anticipated in an evacuated and devastated area, and a zero tolerance approach would have been possible if there were a viable evacuation means so that only those who did not want to leave had stayed behind.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

They saw it coming. They were TOLD it was coming. Fact is,everyone from the Mayor of New Orleans up to the President himself sat on their hands until it happened, and were slow to react after it did. National guard troops should have been in place in New Orleans from day one. Looters should have been dealt with swiftly and severely.New Orleans should have been evacuated BEFORE the hurricane struck, mandatory,no exceptions. The problem is that here in the US we are all so full of ourselves that we think bad things can't happen to us (after all,we're not some third world country) and when bad things DO happen there usually isn't someone who can give the orders to get things done fast. FEMA,like all government agencies,is top heavy with rules and red tape that they can't,by nature, act quickly.Thats why the Red Cross is usually the first one on the scene, and doing the most good.

People in the Superdome without food,water,etc...and where in the hell are all the Army and Air Force cargo helicopters? Sitting at some air base waiting for some General to give the command, with nobody wanting to take the responsibility.

Its a mess that never should have happened. Its not an earth quake, with no warning. We had several days to prepare and mobilize.

Of course, the troops and supplies that SHOULD have been there post-haste are all over in Iraq doing only God knows what. george W. has left his own country ill-prepared for things like this to satisfy whatever agenda he has. WE,as Americans, should demand that AMERICA and AMERICANS should be top priority. Nothing we can do about it now but the next ellection, use your vote to express your opinion.

Thats just my two cents worth, sitting here in a small town with no gas since Thursday and waiting to see how far the oil companies can gouge us before the government steps in and does something about it(little hope of that).

  10. A resemblance in more ways than one unfortunately.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

You know given how you spelled A2 Squared I wouldn't talk. :D

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Yeah I type in the dark and occasionally miss my typos. Thanks for pointing it out. Now I'm going to go invade somebody that's totally irrelevant.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

If we are killing terrorist, it is never irrelevant. Personally I like my picture better

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I don't know where you get your news, but as far as Iraq is concerned,it seems to be the terrorists who are doing the killing. 1870 American soldiers dead at last count. All we seem to be doing is making them mad.

Anyway, the Terrorists are in Afghanastan, and Saudia Arabia. Of course we are kissing the royal asses of the Saudi Royal Family (Worse tyrants than Saddam ever was) because we get oil from them.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I agree with you on the Saudi's but we can't do anything about that right now. We would be cutting off our nose to spite our face. But you have to understand that terrorist are doing the major fighting there and we have our best people there to do a job. No war is clean cut and there are always problems no matter how well planned out. The first time we took on the Germans in Africa we got beat bad by Rommel. Lost over 1600 men in one battle. If our current news media had been on the beaches of Normandy, they would of reported back about how badly we had lost. How terrible it was planned, all the things that went wrong. Even though it succeeded. In a war perspective, we have lost far fewer men than one should of expected. All losses are sad, but they hate us and will continue to attack us whether we want to fight them or not. Do you honestly think they will stop attacking if we pull out now? They will just figure out new ways to attack us. I prefer to let the military fight them. They are better prepared dispite what you heard than the general public is. What did we do to have those buildings leveled? We hadn't attacked them first! So making them hate us even more is really impossible.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I understand what you are saying. But I am old enough to remember Viet Nam.We couldn't win that war and it took us years to figure it out before we turned tail and ran. The people doing the bombing in Iraq are insurgents. They want us out.Thats it.The terrorists that WE need to be worried about are not in Iraq. They are elsewhere, planning the next attack on U.S. soil. Before 9/11,we had warnings, which were mostly ignored by the Bush Administation.

Our own coatline and harbors are open inviations to terrorists. Security is poor,at best. Hell,we can't even keep illegal imigrants from crossing the Mexican Border.

This country would be better served by Bush if he would spend those BILLIONS on security HERE and bring the troops home where they can protect THIER OWN COUNTRY.

Fact is,Saddam never had weapons of mass destruction, and Bush lied to us about it.He was never a real threat to us. Bush attacked Iraq without provocation (much as the Japanese did to us at Pearl Harbor). He was determined to save the family honor and finish what his Daddy couldn't. Plus, it always helps to be in a war during an election year. People vote based on what they are told. And Bush told them plenty.

Oh,and I"m not just blowing smoke here,I am in daily contact via the internet with a friend stationed in Iraq, right in the middle of it. And here is a quote from her : "We can't win this war. I wish they would bring us home" and if anyone should know the truth,it would be someone actually there, wouldn't you think?

Oh ,and for the Record, before we got our ass kicked by Rommel in Africa ( I assume you are talking about Kasarine),the British had already driven Rommel half way across Africa. The US troops were poorly trained and lacked any discipline.

  12. Well, here's an update. I close my browser at night and this morning, not a single dhs.gov in the traffic log. Then I did a bit of research. My home page is my local TV station web page, and I had it open in the background all the time. I THINK it is that web page, checking with the dhs.gov periodically for alerts, etc.

If I close the page,it stops.

If anyone wants to go there and see if they get the same thing, it is :

    www.wate.com

    Thanks for all the help.

  13. well,I'm going to deal with it tomorrow. I'm behind Sygate and a router as well.Nothing incoming from them, just outgoing.

If I worried about the government keeping an eye on me,I would have worried myself to death a long time ago. I guess I've been on their list since that arrest back in '71 at that Viet Nam war protest.

By the way, love that 3 stooges thing on someone's post but hey,you shouldn't insult the stooges that way.

  14. That's weird HP. I just checked my sygate while logged in over there and I'm not getting that. Might be time for some scans.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I have scanned with Avast, also Spybot,Adaware, and M$ spyware. Looks like another scan is in order.

But it could be that DHS IS watching me. I've been known for my Bush-bashing.

  15. Maybe that's why G$ suddenly loosened the rules so anything goes. They are just piping things back to the feds.......Hahahahahahahaha.....Maybe you also said one of those "keywords" they talk about. I don't know if it is true or just bull but I have heard certain words and phrases key a system that starts to track you.......Hahahahaha....I think it's bull myself but who knows...

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

well,it couldn't be all those 'nice' things I said about George W.,could it?

  16. Ok,,I switched from Zone Alarm to Sygate today. I was checking the traffic logs and I am seeing outgoing traffic to : www.dhs.gov, which is the website for the Dept of Homeland Security. Weird thing is,this only happens when I am on the g4 forums. When I log out,it stops.Anybody have any ideas on this?

  17. I've had back problems for 34 years, since a car wreck at 16. I've been in hospital, had every kind of therapy that there is. All the pain killers too.NOTHING helped as much as the chiropractor. The last bad spell I had,my back hurt so bad I couldn't walk.Had to go from room to room on my knees. Emergency Room sent me home with 5 pain pills. The newxt day,I went to the Chiropractor, and after the first visit, I was able to walk. 2 visits later,I was feeling fine.

I also sent a friend with shoulder problems, and he fixed her up to.

My mother, who is 82,goes once a month, every month. She goes bowling every Tursday and she says the visits to her chiropractor keeps her back from hurting.

A GOOD chiropractor will NEVER treat you without doing x-rays first

The AMA and most doctors don't want to recognize Chiropractic because it works (in many cases) and is MONEY out of their pockets.

However, many hospitals now have Chiropractors on staff, and many states (mine included) require insurance companies to cover Chiropractic care.

Scam? No......works all the time with all injuries? no. But personally I would rather spend $35 for a visit (in my area, may be more in other places) than hundreds or THOUSANDS on other forms of therapy that don't work.

Oh,and on a side note, regular therapists and hospitals are now beginning to use therapy that Chiropractors have been using for YEARS.

I don't know how it is now,but my Chiropractor years ago told me that he had more classroom hours of training than an MD has.

Let your wife go and see if it helps. If they don't do x-rays first (or have her x-rays from elsewhere to look at),be cautious.

Oh,and I don't know about your state, but here, you can ask for and get any x-rays that you have taken by a hospital ot anywhere else.

  18. HPoirot after the famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, created by Agatha Christie and introduced in the book "The Mysterious Affair At Styles" in 1920. Currently seen on the Biography Channel is the Series starring David Suchet as Poirot.

The 36 is for the year 1936 (not the year I was born)

Had to add the number as there were other HPoirot's on AOL years ago when I created it. It goes where I go,from board to board.

  19. Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart!!

Without the support of my friends, and those that understood my true intentions, I think I would have turned off this computer, wiped it clean, and sold it for beer money by now...;)

I'm sure that any one of you, were you in my position at that time, would have done the same thing for the members. You all are "Stand-Up" kinda people, who just want to do the "right" thing when its needed.

It just so happens that it was me who was thrust into this position, and forced to act for the greater good, even tho I knew I was cutting my own throat at G4.

I just want this all to end now tho, and allow everyone to move on with their lives. I may need some time to recover from this myself, but I can't think of anywhere better to recover than right here, at my Home!

I wish all of you the Best, wherever you end up posting, and at life in general. Thank you again my friends!

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

As someone who stayed on with the CFH board, I can tell all of you who didn't stay that you aren't missing a thing. Foul language, posts by idiots who came from God knows where....its just not a friendly board anymore and certainly not suitable for anyone under 16. So I'm here, and at leoville as well.

    Still behind you,Chappy.

  20. well, due to my 'singular affliction' I am forced to be inside when the sun shines,so I spend my days here on the computer. I am learning html and how to build websites. When I get tired, I go to the boards. They are, literally,my main contact with other people. So you can understand why I have been so disheartened over what has happened to TechTv and the boards.

Anyone needs help.I try to offer what little knowledge I have. I'll be here, and still be there too....as long as Pete C and Sultan, ProDriver, and a few others stay.

  21. What a difference a day makes. Now that Tech support is re-named CFH I've never seen so much about-faces in my life. People who were ranting and cussing the mods 3 hours ago are now defending them. "they didn't really lie, they just weren't given the facts" Thats a load of horse shit if ever I've heard it. Miss Fae went out of her way to make you look like a fool and in the broadest sense of the term, surpressing the truth is the same as lying.

Chappy,I'm standing up for you over there until the almighty Fae bans me too.

I've never kissed Ass in my life and I'm not about to start now. You did what you had to do and kept your pride and honor.
