  1. No, he meant the dissaperance of some of your RAM is because your onboard video is sharing it. 2x512 Ram is 1024 - and since it is reading 960 your onboard video is stealing 64MB of RAM. That is one of the benefits of an additional video card.

I would recommend a 6800GS video card - I got a eVGA one, they are awesome and they are down to around $195 now

i am currently hacking THE MOST DIFFFICULT TIME trying to find a 6800, i found a 6800 OC on tiger direct for 194$, and i think that is the one i want, i am not sure what a 6800 GS is, or if it is AGP compatable, post replies or PM me about it. thank you. best techie has helped me so much, its amazing

  2. how is this one? seems reasonable (i know nothing about power supplies) ...oh and i got 2x512mb Kingston mem. i love it, only problem is i am only reading 960mb  but it it running great, thank you for all your help, that first site with all the comp names and it even has mine! so i know exactually what the specs need to be to get a diff brand, which is very help full....and more suggestions would be great, thank you...oh, i almost forgot, anyhting under 50$ would be great because i got one of those visa debit cards and i dont care what i spend it on, so as soon as i get a definitive PS i will purchase it probably today, then get another card with 220$ on it to get my 6800 :D

That supply should be just fine. Fortron is a very good brand.

If you are currently using integrated video, that would explain the discrepancy in your RAM.

yes i am using intergrades graphics, but other games i own work fine, its just Valve games. but, i dont care, as soon as i get that card and PS battlefeild 2 and Fear are my games of choice, thanks. i will put the order in today, i hope its compatable

  3. Is the RAM detected correctly. Try reseating it. Also mabey resetting CMOS will help. It cant hurt. As for the password have you tried just getting in with a blank password? also try commen ones like user and default. Is this board new or used?

its a new board, ive never even been in bios to even SET a password, but im not sure if i need to get into it TODAY but when i install my PS and video card i will need to, i think...anyway. its only valve that crahses, COD demo, halo, and UT2k4 run fine, actually better with the new ram, its just valve games.....

  4. so i want to get into BIOS and i do what i have to, and it said to enter password...i never set a bios password....ever...so i dont know what the password was, and i am trying to aviod moving sockets and shit like that...any ideas?

    also

after installing my new ram i am having problems runnin Valve games, i mean, CSS HL2DM HL2 ect ect, is all choppy and the sound is all funked up and i dont even know whats goin on, this has never happend before, so i dont know what it is. thanks again, you people are my saviors.

  5. Any standard ATX power supply should be compatible.

Do not under any circumstances buy the $20 clunkers. If it costs less than $40 and claims to be more than 300 W, it's almost always a lie.

    It's more important to buy a high-quality supply than a high-wattage supply.

Good and cheap is a rare combination.

Amen - I trust Aspire, Cooler Master, Thermaltake, and a handful more - don't get cheated on a crappy power supply

On the show Call for Help - Leo talked about how cheapy Taiwanese power supply companies will produce about 1000 PSU's and then test to find one rated at 300W so they can sell them all rated for 300.

So stick with brand names. By the way, what type of RAM did you get?

how is this one? seems reasonable (i know nothing about power supplies) ...oh and i got 2x512mb Kingston mem. i love it, only problem is i am only reading 960mb  but it it running great, thank you for all your help, that first site with all the comp names and it even has mine! so i know exactually what the specs need to be to get a diff brand, which is very help full....and more suggestions would be great, thank you...oh, i almost forgot, anyhting under 50$ would be great because i got one of those visa debit cards and i dont care what i spend it on, so as soon as i get a definitive PS i will purchase it probably today, then get another card with 220$ on it to get my 6800 :D

  6. ok , i got new ram for christmas and this 1gb is running amazing. now i plan on buying this(EDIT: i just clicked the link and it said it is no longer available for sale, so now i have to search for another one. arrgh. ) with the money i got but i am also needing to upgrade my power supply to run this beast, now i have a "generic" 250W suppy and i want to upgrade to 400W. i saw soem one newegg for like, 15-25 bucks, pretty cheap no money is not a option, but im not sure which one to get, are there special specs that need to be compatable with the rest of my comp on the PS? i see all these number and volts and im not sure what they mean...or could i just buy any PS and i will work...by the way i have a HP Pavillion a320n. thanks for all your help, much appreciated.

  7. ok, i want to get a 6600GT or a 6800...im not sure which is better...it hasto be AGP ...the main reason i am upgrading is to play BF2 (along with others) but i found this on a BF2 site (not EA sponsered)

    Video Cards

Battlefield 2 only supports the following video cards:-

    Radeon X700 (PCIe)

    Radeon X600 (PCIe)

    GeForce 6600 (PCIe)

    GeForce PCX 5900 (PCIe)

    GeForce 5800 Series (AGP)

ATI Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition

    ATI Radeon X800 PRO

    ATI Radeon 9800 Series

    ATI Radeon 9600 Series

    ATI Radeon 9550 (RV350LX)

    ATI Radeon 9500 / 9700 Series

    ATI Radeon 8500 Series

    ATI Radeon X300 Series

    NVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra

    NVidia GeForce 6800 GT

    NVidia GeForce 6800

    NVidia GeForce FX 5950 Series

    NVidia GeForce FX 5900 Series

    NVidia GeForce FX 5700 Series

now the 6600GT isent on there, except PCIe,so does that mean it wont work if i get the AGP version? or...what...im a little confused

  8. yes i believe so...but this is bizarre, im gettin different specs from different HP web sites. one site it tells me i have no PCI slots, another it tells me i only have AGP...i did the crucial scan and it says i only have AGP too...so i dont know until i open it up once more tomorrow

follow up: whats would be a better graphics card..PCI or AGP

  9. ok so i have a Hp pavillion a320n and it has 512mb of RAM. i want to add another 512 sick in my machine...is there any specifics i need to know? or do i just buy and 512 stick....the ram i have is DDR SDRAM so i am assumin i need to get another one of those any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi Grundlelove

Your machine supports a maximum of 1G of PC2700 DDR SDRAM, so just make sure you get a brand name stick of the same type.

Your machine also has 3 integrated PCI slots, so you don't only have just AGP, so you can go with a PCI graphics card if you wish, but the 8X AGP would be better. It will also support either ATI or Nvidia, so again whichever you choose will work.

ummm...i think you might be a little confused...my computer hols a max of 2 gig of ram and it has to PCI slots, which is why i am wanting a AGP...im not sure where your got your info but a link would help, everything ive looked into my machine i dont see any PCI slots at all. ive even opend it up and looked at what i can do and i still never say any PCI...but i might be wrong. and i my father got me 2 512 sticks for my machine, all DIMM so...yea

  10. thank you that helped me a lot and my rents are out as i am typin this gettin it (1 gig stick)for my christmas present

but a follow up question....i am also gettin a new graphics card and i only have AGP slots, so i told my father (old school comp nerd) to get me a Nvidia 6800 or a Nvidia 6600 GT both AGP compatable....but on that site you told me i had it scan my computer and it reccomended only ATi cards for my system..is that because they are sponsered by them or just have an agreement to opnly reccomend ATi? i mean, my computer is all Nvidia anyways so i dont see the problem. anyway, thank you for help that site was a major help.

  11. I'd go for the $140 one. THe only difference between them is the brand name.

I can't belive HP doesnt have your PSU rating on their website. Great company....

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

:( yea, but i like HP, im my opinion they are better than dell...but thats just my opinion. i actually might order this at the end of this week. thanks man. im still gonna look around tho for other options. but your help is much appreciated

  12. Hmm. I havent thought about the PSU. Do you know what your PSU's rated power is? (should be on the side of it)

Yes, you have an AGP slot open.

    EDIT:

Here's a couple in your budget.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

thank you. which do u reccommend, to get the most out of it. also, idk what power supply is and i dont feel like lookig, actually, i cant right now because i got loads of tuff on t but i will look.

  13. i was wondering if you could reccommend me a good graphics card to get for an upgrade. i got a HP pavillion ...i dont know full specs but i do know this.

its got 512mb ddr sd ram..amd athalon XP 2800+ and i dont feel like typing all this out so ill give you a creen shot: screen shot

i would prefer it to be Nvidia, and good enough to play some next gen games like AOE III or FEAR or perhaps BF2?

    thank you

  15. arrghh... this is all really confusing. ok let me go throught this entire thing step by step. ok i have this floppy, its win98 startup disk. no i but it in and i turn on the PC. i get a message that says missing NTLDR insert another disk and restart ...so i just shutdown do it again. then it will give me a prompt. with 3 options.

    1. run windows with CD-rom support

    2. run windows with out Cd-rom support.

    3. more help, or something like that.

so i choose run windows with out help. then it does some scroll stuff and then it says preparing to boot windwod please wait this may take a few minutes blah blah, then it just takes me to A:\    so i decide to go to the DIR and see whats there , scandisk, ect everything thats on a startup disk. but here is where im stuck. i have nothing to do from here ...even if i format, i still dont have a OS to install because i cant freakin find my windows 98 install disk!! so im pretty much screwed, even if i do format, i have just a empty computer with nothing to do, so i guess my real goal is to just get to windows and mabye use this thing! but i cant because of this missing NTLDR...my solution was to say forget this format, then reinstall, but i cant find the OS install disk...which sucks, so impretty much screwed, and my laptop is in the same situation. this blows.

If you would just scroll up to the link i posted and follow those simple directions download that file make a floppy with it.. it will turn a blank floppy into a bootable killdisk that will format your drive for you.

    simple.

1.format a floppy or install a blank into the drive

2.click on the link posted above

3.download to desktop and click on the desktop icon

4.turn off computer make sure you set floppy as first boot in bios upon reboot if it is not already

    first boot =floppy

    2nd=CD ROM

    3rd= hard drive

    5. start computer with the new killdisk floppy in the drive and follow the instructions.

6.Remove floppy after you are finished/insert 98cd and reboot

Very simple procedure heck you would be done by now if you would of started when i first posted

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

i would be if i had the 98 cd....which i dont, or else i would of done what u said bc you are right, it was really easy, thanks tho i iknow what im gonan go anyway...bet 2 new hd's and a new mother board.

  16. arrghh... this is all really confusing. ok let me go throught this entire thing step by step. ok i have this floppy, its win98 startup disk. no i but it in and i turn on the PC. i get a message that says missing NTLDR insert another disk and restart ...so i just shutdown do it again. then it will give me a prompt. with 3 options.

  17. use killdisk to wipe the data from the drive then goto bootdisk.com for a 98 floppy boot disk and go from there. you will need the 98 cd of course.

you can get killdisk at bootdisk.com.

    M
