  1. I have to agree about AOL but I feel the same way about Yahoo.

About two weeks ago I went over to an old friends who is totally PC illiterate.

He told me 14 year old son was having problems but the machine still connected to the net on MCHS.

    It was running XP pro.

The desktop picture had been replace by what looked like a flaming bio hazard logo with a caption that said the box was badly infected (no sh*t) and click here to fix.

There were three AVs I never heard of trying to run scans.

The PC connected to the net alright but with a redirector to the site from hell that said it would make all the problems go away for just 29.99 9 (It was connecting using Firefox BTW).

No task manager as it said I didn't have permission from the admin.

I didn't have my usual stuff with me as I assumed with a connection I could download what I needed.

So I went out and got a copy of NAV 95 I had in my briefcase in the car.

Spent thirty minutes clicking pop ups and windows warnings to install and update the AV.

Then I restarted in safe mode and the Norton removed 51 items and deleted all the AVs and unfamiliar security programs that were on it.

When I rebooted in full XP there was the devil again as my Friend had taken to calling it and no connection except to site from hell.

Couldn't even keep the run box open long enough to enter cmd and push enter.

After four and a half hours I got pissed and reloaded XP.

I was in such a good mood by this time that I formatted it three times before reloading.

Left the Norton on it and loaded my favorite anti malware, CCleaner and the MVP host file blocker.

After lessons on using and updating their new protection I left them with a fully updated and certified MS box.

In exchange my friend is going to put a new exhaust on my Buick this Thursday for just the cost of parts.

  2. Yeah, but that is why I use XP / IE.

Most of the people around here do.

Although it looks like I will have to learn vista soon though.

As a side note I have taken to insisting that the more clueless have accounts for each user as 90% of the times I can snag files, pictures, etc out of them and delete / create new acounts and end up with problem solved.

  3. They seem to be maximizing profits by racking up fees.

I am fixing to go to war with Master Card.

Went to check my balance to see if I could swing a new toy I want and they showed my last payment as late.

So I went and looked at my checking and my account was debited the day before my due date.

While I had my card account on screen I called customer service and told them about it.

Before my eyes, the late fee disappeared, my credit line dropped from 15,000 to 500 and an overdraft fee appeared on my $502 balance.

  4. I have the XP updater set to download them and notify me.

Last night when I turned the machine off there was a Win Security Center logo on the upper right corner of the off icon.

The title under the icon had changed to turn off and download updates.

And on the shutdown page it kept flashing the messages "installing update 1" and "do not turn off the power Windows will shut down automatically".

I have never seen this in four years of using XP.

    Is anyone familiar with this?

  5. Ah, summer time and the livin' is easy.

If you don't count the electric for the AC. :P

Been out doing my veggie route.

I have a Friend who planted about 18 tomato plants of various kinds so I took him cantaloupe and some cucumbers and got a grocery bag full.

Then I stopped by and visited several people and did some trading.

I now have cantaloupe, watermelon, cabbage, green beans, bell peppers, jalapeños, beets, carrots, radishes, bib lettuce and several heads of garlic..

Plus the tomato's I kept for me.

The peaches should be on here shortly

    The only problem is zucchini.

You have to ring doorbells and run to get rid of a sack of them as it seems like they are the one thing everyone grows well.

I'l have a Pepsi with ice and some of those nuts.

Puches up Skynard Workin' for our host.

  6. Thanks for the help TT.

Never fear dad, you guys taught me well. :)

    I was off kilter apparently.

Guy says for awhile it was just shutting off randomly (and saying it recovered from a fatal error) but hasn't done that lately, now locks up constantly and always gets stuck searching for files in folders and never finds them.

    He thinks malware.

I am thinking corrupted files so I have him run CHKDSK /r.

CHKDSK does not report any files corrupted.

Ok then I say what does event log show.

Searches tell me MRxSmb errors relate to networking and modem problems but also see reports of malware being hidden in those system32 files

Am trying to decide weather to have a log done.

Don't want to waste a readers time with an unnecessary log.

So I thought I would get a security expert to tell me if there is a lot of stuff being hidden in this type of file going around.

  7. I am helping a guy who says his machine keeps hanging up and gets lost on file searches.

This is usually caused by malware, file corruption or a memory problem in my experience.

Anyways, his error logging is showing MRxSmb errors and warnings.

This is related to networking and modem services.

But I also see that it is /has been used as a hiding place for malware.

Should I look into the malware thing or carry on looking for another cause?

  8. Hmm.

Looks like awhile since anyone has been in here.

I heard TT was back to work in the real world.

Hope I don't get in trouble for crawling in the bathroom window.

Oh well, that free beer sign I taped to the front door pught to liven things up. :whistling:

Thought he was up on the accents until he fielded a call from London and got an Eastender.

Said it wasn't exactly the Queen's own the bloke was talkin' :)

  10. Thanks for the warm greetings eveyone.

I will not be a such a stranger in future.

Been busy taking care of my old people and spending a lot of time at another ASAP site.

The made me a globular murderater or some such.

Can't exactly understand everything those British guys say but I try. :P

I think the last time I was here the aliigators had just showed up at the bar.
