  1. LOL  - olmec36, that's priceless. :P

Yes, I've heard the new browser Google is pretty cool. It's different than most browsers though; they give you a 10GB of cache space and nothing ever really gets emptied or deleted. It's all searchable through the google search engine. And, after 6 months, federal agencies can sift through it to see if there's anything of "national interest". Oh - and spammers too. :D j/k of course........I hope!!!

  2. Yes, what Snaxe said...it's a program, just like Outlook or Outlook Express or Eudora, etc., etc. You have to plug your email into it (POP3 account) and it goes out and checks it for you, downloads it to your computer, displays it for you in pretty ways.

So, that's the deal. I'm still working on getting it to functions smoothly; I have it set to check mail every 10 minutes, but it isn't doing it still. For a full-fledged program, this sure *acts* a lot like beta software. *sigh* But, the interface is nice and it's not too bulky, so I'm still okay with it.

  3. I agree that from the outside it can look like a lot of post count boosting (well more than look like, I suppose, cause it does boost counts), but I think everyone in there doing it was doing it with the best of intentions and not for that reason. I had a lot of fun seeing how other peoples' minds work! Yours scares me a bit mac - :P

If we do it again, I'll be a part, but if not I certainly understand. It was a fun time! And there is always more fun to be had around the bend.

Watch out for those ninja monkeys though....

  4. Speaking of which. Thanks again Hitest for inviting me over here.

I really like it here. People are great and nice and polite and very helpful.

And I love not being critisized for being a Mac person. Which is what happened to me every time I went on the G4 boards. They were always arguing to much about which is better instead of having mutual respect for all machinse for what they are. Like I do for PCs.

Everyone here does what thaty can do to help out.

That's something I was really sick of too, macmarauder - the flamefests about Mac vs. PC are soooo old. Those that truly understand computing know that there's a reason that both brands exist - because they both have their uses. Although, I do have to admit, I love watching TheLetterK take someone down who just is bashing Macs cause they don't like them...throws back every reason they say they don't like Macs back in their face. I know it's wrong, but it makes me smile. LOL I wish I were as well armed with knowlege about Macs to do the same...I know quite a bit about them, and I don't mind intelligent criticism about a machine, but I don't like ignorance....guess you can see why I have a hard time there... ;)

But yeah - the G4 boards are just no fun anymore, and this place is. Has been a bit slow around here for the last few days, but I've been busy at work, so it hasn't been too torturous. I'd hate to be busy and know I'm missin' the party!

  5. Okay...I'll toss my two pennies in the pot.

Single (divorced) male - 30 yrs old

Living in the Dallas, TX area

Work at an Information Tech company that provides all kinds of different services to clients - I'm the dispatcher here. I troubleshoot level one calls, fix what I can by phone (which often isn't much since I'm really just learning) and pass the rest on to the guys in the field. Gives me a LOT of time at the computer.

Like to read, watch movies, video games, and of course - learning about computers. Lovin' this forum...

  6. If you have a CD player NOT on your computer that you could play the music through, I would suggest doing that instead.

I agree with the folks that have voted for the "outside" player. There's no sense in taking up resources unless you have to. If you do have to use it - no portable player or something - then go with winamp; definitely doesn't take up much memory.

  7. Cool - thanks for the responses Nerelda and pueo38. I hadn't heard from anyone last night when I was home and bored, so I decided just to jump in and give it a shot. It was my default email in about two hours. LOL... So far I like it pretty well. I've set up several accounts to it and am working on putting in filters to route the mail just where I want it. Other than my email notification going off a few times when I didn't have email (?), it worked flawlessly. And, it seems to run a little bit quicker than Outlook at least. Thanks! Hopefully it continues in that fashion!

  8. Hello folks - I asked this question kind of once before, but didn't get a response and figure I'll phrase it a bit differently.

I just downloaded Thunderbird 0.8 at work to give it a look over, but I can't really set it up with an email account since I'm at work and I really don't want any home email sent here. It seems like a good program, and I like that it's customizable just like Firefox through extensions. But, I'm wondering if anyone uses it as their email client.

I want to get away from using MS Outlook because of it's clunky and resource hogging nature. Is Thunderbird a viable option at this point in time? Outlook is a pretty reliable email client if nothing else, but I don't use the calendar feature on it and most other incorporated features would be overkill for me. I need a good all-pupose email client that will let me write mail, keep me relatively spam-free from the start without a third-party add on and come with the basic email tools (spell check, etc.). This seems to fit those criteria.

Or, perhaps someone else is dearly in love with their email client and wants to share? Thanks!

  9. I thought I'd throw this question out to the group and get some peoples' take on how Mozilla and their Thunderbird email client, Calendar client, etc. stack up against Outlook. I'm currently using Outlook 2003, and while I don't dislike it or anything, it's not the greatest of email clients either. I wouldn't mind having something a bit less cumbersome, slow and resource hogging. But, I do like the fact that Outlook groups emails in my folders by when they were sent in a separate heading above the emails (today, yesterday, last week, so on) and organizes pretty well in the navigation bar on the left hand side. I probably should just download Mozilla and give it a shot, but I'm not at home right now, I'm at work and I'm bored. Soooooo......

Anyone out there used it? Liked it/disliked it? How come?

    Thankz youz guyz....

  10. Everyone could use a few good sites that are Mac related. Here's my contribution:

Mac Addict - homepage for the great Mac magazine.

macosxhints - I haven't used it really, since I haven't had my mac for a bit, but I've heard great things.

bombich.com - more tips and tweaks

ResExcellence - Everything you need to trick out your OS X

MacShareware.net - good place for helpful proggies. (click on the Mac OS X files or Mac Classic link under "Site Functions" header near the top.)

Macgamefiles.com - some shareware and free games, plus plenty of demos.

Version Tracker - I used to use this religiously and haven't in a while, but it looks as good as ever. Keeps tracks of updates for joo.

Okay...those are good to start. Anyone have some to add? :D

  11. Thanks for the info, WiredMonkey.

    I did't notice the disclaimer.

No problem tg - it wasn't on the page for sign-up, so I never knew until a couple weeks after I donated some accounts. We were wondering what took them so long and someone (can't remember who or if it was this board or the "other" board - sorry for not giving credit... ) pointed out that spot on the main page. It's still great to donate, especially since those that give them out regularly know that more are always coming. So, hopefully they'll have enough in reserve. Just spreadin' the msg... B)

  12. Tyme,

Another option, if you have some G-mail invites you can't get rid of, donate them to the troops overseas, at this link.

    tg,

A lot of us went to that link and donated, I think - but if you read the disclaimer on the webite's front page, you might as well keep giving them away while you wait for them to contact you, cause it may be a while:

IMPORTANT NOTE: We currently have a lot more donation offers for invites than we do requests. We plan on doing another outreach to men and women overseas, and we plan on the requests rising once again. If you "donate" an invite, please keep in mind that you may not be contacted right away with a match, so please feel free to keep sharing your Invites with friends and family as well. We will keep you updated on the trends and if the need for more invites increases. Thanks Everyone!!!!

It's a great group to donate to, but they've got plenty right now. So, that's why I threw some more of my invites back into the ring here after offering them to that website. Glad they have what they need... :)

  13. Well, heck, since I haven't heard back from that GI Gmail donation place, and I've heard they say keep giving them out even if you've pledged, and since I will get more invites anyway, I'll offer up a bunch.

I've got 6 invites in my account right now - is there anyone on the board who still doesn't have one? Post to here and I'll get with you on getting one. Don't put your email up on the board though - not sure how spam bots patrol, but they glean stuff like that from forums all the time.

  14. I knew I wasn't alone in the frustration. It just sucks because when I started posting there (just back in July) it was a decent community. Wasn't fantastic - there were always some trolls around - but nothing like now. I post in two forums (The Screen Savers forum and the Tech Support forum) and now I barely look at them. I have this week because it's slow at work and tech sites/forums are all I'm allowed to go to really at work.

macmarauder - who are the people disrupting stuff over there? Do you not want to name names? Do you want to name names, but feel you shouldn't? Will a PM be better on the conscience? B)

Anyway - yeah...drives me nuts over there...these forums are better though, so it's not life or death for me to be over there - just nice to have tech places to learn from when it's a slow day at another site. This is still my fave!

  15. MAN.......

The Screen Savers board over there has degenerated into this free-for-all kind of whine-fest that is just infuriating. Even the mods have decided to look the other way and not pay attention it seems. It's just ridiculous. They pin a folder to the top that says OFFICIAL!! So what did everyone think of the new Set/ Cohost/ Show content/LA etc thread. All others will be locked - makes sense. And it's basically the "this sucks" "no, it rules" kind of stuff, yeah, but there needed to be a place for it. I go on today and there are like 4 other folders on the front page alone with separate threads...so I post to them, basically to bump them to the top so mods might see them . I say - looks like the mods missed a few, and gave a link to the pinned thread. I get this response in response:

Damn webben go whine to the mods some more you crybaby pisspants. I bet you were a rat in school too. Well, you probably still are in school by the looks of it.

I swear I wanted to go off on the little n00b....but, I did my best and only responded with this:

No, I just like to have all the stuff relevent to the new TSS show and host in the place it was designed to be - so I don't have to go all over the place reading 100 posts spread over 15 threads. That's why the thread was pinned there in the first place. Any other witty, intelligent criticisms?

It's just so sad that it has gotten that low over there...I'll say it once more...I love this place. *sigh* SOOOOO much better here. Thanks AGAIN B! :D

  16. If I turn it on will SP2 automatically download or will I get to pick and choose the updates?

It's a good idea to set Windows Update to automatic, but then make sure you change the "update and auto install" to the choice that says something like "download and prompt me to schedule". That way you can choose what updates it has that you want on your computer. That's what I did. It will give you options on the Update page that recommend updating to SP2, but give you the option to sidestep and look for other important updates. Go with that!

  17. I agree Nerelda - the fact they're sending an email would have been a key tip to me that it was a scam, but they did a good job to make it look official. Might have slipped by some users who weren't used to seeing these sorts of things. Why do some people have to be wastes of chromosomes? <_<:(
